DeVries NOT a candidate for Iowa job. Ben McCollum the next Iowa Head Coach?

Well, sounds like we got our answer on the loss of DD as a candidate. It came down to NIL and Beth couldn’t guarantee a number that DD thinks he needs to compete. And she’s not going to adjust the rev share from $2.5M to compensate. I’m good losing him for that because it tells me he doesn’t have confidence enough in himself to win on his own merits to draw more NIL or in his ability to meet and greet folks to get more donations.
Are you hearing this somewhere or speculating?

Not saying you are wrong; I’m just curious.

Got this elsewhere - who knows whats real w all this lol....

Sources close to Devries said Iowa was his dream job and that he was worried about our NIL
Since it looks like we aren’t getting him it’s a reflag for the program.
Either he doesn’t like who’s in charge ( Beth ) or the NIL and money isn’t there , or both.
To lose out on a guy who’s dream job is Iowa shows our NIL is weak and it’s not looking good and/or BG was playing with her food at the dinner table. If we get Ben and I hope we do but it’s definitely a red flag when we can’t land a coach who’s dream job was to be here

Is there actually any quote on record of DD or BM saying Iowa is their dream job? Or is it just stuff people "in the know" are saying?

Not that it really has any impact on anything, but it's been said a lot in this thread about both coaches. And as usual, the folks that claim to have that "insider info" have been wrong about almost everything.

This post isn't directly in response to yours, just something I've been wondering throughout this thread.

I doubt it’s Beth. Everyone (other than Fran and BF😎) have had nothing but glowing things to say about her. Everything I’m hearing is that it was 100% NIL related.

Rampant speculation, little confirmed and corroborated on record public information.
In other words, a classic power conference coaching search.

Indiana has more:
* Money for NIL to pay players
* Money to pay coaches
* Fan support (they sell out every game even when they suck)

And then compare Indiana to Iowa. Ughhhh....

Any coach coming to Iowa should worry about NIL support, so it makes sense that DeVries would bring that up, not to mention the likely difference in salary. If Iowa can't get the NIL $$$ up to a more competitive level, it will not be possible to have sustained success against programs with more than double the financial support.

It seems there are a lot of people in the know, so please tell me, if we don't get DeVries or McCollum how is this Beth's fault? Please be specific in your answer.

Man, that list sounds an awful lot like Neb football….right down to the “sellouts even when they suck”. Good luck with that Devries.

With IU being so desperate to get this hire right, it makes you wonder what his annual salary is, how many years he gets and what the buy out is.

college sports....now pro sports.....yuck....

I feel like we are the Oakland A's going against the LA Dodgers

Well, she is the athletic Director. When she got the job, much was said about her ability to navigate the new landscape. Translation: NIL. If she fired Fran without a solid plan to shore up bball’s NIL to lure a new coach it’s a major fail.

IF BG “closed the door” on De Vries when she realized he/his agent were “shopping her” vs. WV and Indiana, more power to her!
I think the best way to find someone is to be upfront with them, make them your best (realistic) offer, discuss the program’s future and get their name on a contract. Then HONOR that contract as best you can every day. Promising “blue sky” is a quick way to get you ass in too deep, too quick.

They’re are lots of qualified basketball coaches out there looking for a new opportunity. The ADs job is to find the best one available.
UIowa has no reason to feel at a disadvantage here…..for the most part, school loyalty and support in major sports has been solid and unquestioned. The rules are changing…and the school has to take steps to adjust to the new rules. And that is definitely under the AD’s leadership and job scope.

I wonder if the issue could be Iowa’s unwillingness to contribute a greater portion of its rev share to MBB. And I think this could be a mistake.

I’ve heard elsewhere that Indiana plans to take the average amount given to MBB by other B1G schools, and then double it. Iowa probably can’t do that, but until we grow NIL, it seems prudent to bump that number up a bit.

Of course, the problem is where that money comes from. It can’t be football. It can’t be WBB. Probably not wrestling (unless that sport has enough resources coming I from other places.) So honestly, it’s probably got to be baseball (or any other sport that would be getting a share). And that would hurt the baseball program significantly. But if you want to rebuild your MBB program — which actually has a chance to produce revenue — I think you’ve got to do it.

I’m in favor of a split that’s 73% football, 17% men’s basketball, and 10% women’s bball. Everything else is NIL only. That’d be a split of $15M to football, $3.5M to MBB, and $2M to WBB. If our NIL could get to $2.5M, that’d be $6M total to MBB which should be enough to compete.
