At this point, I would guess WVa is our top competition for McCollum. It's worth thinking about how the Iowa and WVa jobs might compare from BM's perspective
Iowa:
- Unmatched media rights deal, ensuring sustained strong institutional support, in terms of salary, facilities, etc.
- Weak NIL program at present
- Will require significant efforts to re-engage fan base and develop NIL support
- Excellent proximity to McCollum's established recruiting base in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, etc.
- Emotional connection ... McCollum grew up a Hawkeye fan
- Administration that has historically shown tremendous patience with coaches ... one down year won't get you fired
WVa:
- Good institutional support, but B12 will never match B1G in terms of TV money coming in.
- Decent, established NIL program
- Strong fan support
- Will need to develop new recruiting base, but proximity to Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, DC, etc. provides strong potential
- Less familiarity with living in West Virginia, after spending most of his life in Iowa and NW Missouri.
- Familiarity with AD
At the end of the day, it will depend on what McCollum prioritizes, where he thinks he can be successful, and where he and his family want to spend the next 10-15 years (hopefully).
