Dickinson’s comment

Yes I didn't read anything offensive in Dickinson comments and I would be surprised if any board members know more about basketball than Dickinson.

Villanova is more disciplined because they do have at Top5 coach that has a system/program that delivers outperformance such as a national title. Iowa has a system/program that is not as good and so far at most 1 win in NCAA tourney and I think Fran is 0-fer vs Jay Wright head to head.

It is true that Fran at his worst only accuses Refs of being "m'efer cheating refs" whereas Howard at his worst will choke a guy out.

Villanova does run some form of motion offense

Iowa is 1-5 all time against Villanova. So basically what you're saying is that Villanova owes us a win....... :)

Great, the men's basketball team finished the season #16, with a Big Ten Tournament championship, and lost a close game in the NCAA Tournament, making them one of the final 64 teams out of approximately 350 teams. Objectively above-average.
The coaching staff is below average considering their time together here and the overall results. This is true while also keeping in mind how much coaching experience exists within the staff and the aforementioned lack of success considering "reasonable capabilities" of a program like iowa over a 12-14 year period of time. Any further questions can be directed to your mother.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.

Thanks yabich

An above average coach would have been to the sweet 16 by now at a program like Iowa.

Fran doesn't address any of the collective issues on this squad ever. Not defense. Not guard play. Not addressing his own coaching in close games, which is miserable. Then throw the coaches kids on top of that.

Year 13 of Fran coming right up

Turn overs per game:

Iowa 9.2
Villanova 10.0
Michigan 11.8

What is even more amusing is a player from a team who’s coach slapped another coach and had multiple players suspended is talking about discipline. There is a lot of irony here.
Hunter wouldn't know what discipline was if it slapped him in the face.... o_O

My goodness is this real?

Yes, Dickinson commented about the crowds at MSU, Illinois, OSU and Wisconsin chanting NIT when they played. Now those teams are home watching the tournament.
I did not see his presser but the article quoted him as referring to Wisconsin as 'the team down in Madison, the red and white team.' Would't call them by name due to their scuffle I'm sure.

I haven’t watched Villanova play, thoughts?

Villanova is usually one of the best free throw shooting teams each year and much of that skill is concentration and the discipline to stay with a good routine. Nova is said to usually be ranked well in turnovers and rebounding which again takes discipline. At least that is what analysts said in their last two games when I watched some of those games.

And of course what takes the most discipline and grit to play in Bball but defense and a coach that demands great defense. Take that for what it is worth.

If you read his full quote its not nearly that bad. It seemed like he was trying to draw similarities on offense that its more flexible/open. I thought it got blown out of proportion. If anything we are pretty disciplined given how few turnovers we commit, assists, free throw percentage, etc. Now defensive excellence? that could be a problem.

Ok. Our "tenured below average coaches" in basketball (men's and women's) and football made the conference championship game this year. Our wrestling team finished #3 nationally. It appears you are the only thing below average here. lol indeed.

Do not forget Men's Big Indoor Track champions. They will contend for BIG Baseball title too.
So many critical of our athletic program but it is actually faring quite well. Penn State won the wrestling title but suck in both mens and women's basketball. Given their history and resources, their football program has been underperforming too. Their baseball program is bottom of the league. The men's track team was near the bottom too.
Graduation rates for each of the teams are rated great to excellent. Athletic department shows great revenue/expense ratio. The sky is not falling at Iowa.

Wade, are Iowa Peers their fellow B1G teams or the Entire 350 Div 1 base? Longwood and Iowa are the same? I think the appropriate comparison base for Iowa are fellow B1G teams....so Iowa is behind Penn State for instance in last sweet16 appearance.

Shouldn't a Top20 in the Nation sports revenue school like Iowa have more resources than say St. Peters and thus better results? If not, then what is the point of $3million compensation package if Iowa's expected result is same as the other 350 schools?

Why should Iowa have its last Sweet16 in 1999 when UNI had one in 2010 and ISU is in sweet 16 right now---aren't fellow schools in the state more representative of expectations than the random 350 schools across the country?

In isolation, this year was great for Iowa basketball.

The entire body of work is meh to lttle bit above average vs vs fellow B1G schoools, vs P5 conference schools, vs in state schoos. You certainly are happy---so we have free speech and you are welcome to your opinion.

Some questions.

1. What about the Iowa program do you think makes it inevitable that any above average coach would have been in the Sweet 16 during Fran's tenure? This is addressed your first sentence: "An above average coach would have been to the sweet 16 by now at a program like Iowa."

2. Didn't Fran bench the starting point guard last season, moved Jordan back to the point and installed Tony as the starting 2 guard? Weren't the results of that change very positive in the W/L columns?

3. Didn't Fran bench Payton and install Ahron as the starting point guard this season?

4. Aren't 2 and 3 proof that your statement "Fran doesn't address any of the collective issues on this squad ever. ... Not guard play. ..." is clearly erroneous? (Emphasis added).

5. Connor was a top 100 (#92) recruit. Patrick was around the national number 70-80 range in his class (the ESPN 2019 recruiting data is "page not available" for the entire 2019 year tonight). When has Iowa been so deep that we could pass on virtually any top 100 player?

6. Who were the better players that Fran passed over to sign his national top 100 children?

7. Who should play Connor and Patrick's minutes?

You probably won't get much argument from anyone about the defense. F McC appears to have no feel for defense.

You would probably get more argument on close games. For example, I don't think he coaches poorly at the end of close games. I think the problem is we are in too many close games because the team comes out looking unprepared, digs a huge hole and falls short of filing in too many games. So, a couple more questions, if you will.

8. What is your solution to F McC's shortcomings, actual or perceived?

9. If your solution is firing F McC who are the replacements that you can guarantee will (a) come to Iowa for the salary Iowa can afford; and (b) produce more and better wins at an Iowa program that is of such quality as that to which you attribute Iowa in your first sentence?

I just wish I could turn on the game someday and feel like Fran and staff are actually trying to address their program’s yearly and ongoing weaknesses.

It all just seems so god damned stubborn.
The definition of insanity…

Agree, its depressing. Frans stubbornness prevents him from getting better or even admitting theres a problem.

Read through a lot of what you wrote.

It just confirms what I see when I watch Iowa, especially the part about lack of attention to detail and Fran being an enabler of bad habits.

You see those things over and over with the sloppy defense and rebounding.

Never gonna happen. It use to irritate me, but I’ve just bought into the fact this is how it is under Fran.

Yeah I’m with you. I still watch. I have no false hopes. More of a curiosity. Like this year, seeing Gatens on the bench, someone young and maybe still full of piss n vinegar testosterone and shit, maybe he loses it in some coaches meeting and is like if we don’t flip this shit and build this program defense-first, fùck it I’ll go sell insurance or whatever.

That old locker room audio of Bob knight screaming about being fuçking tired of losing to Purdue comes to mind lol.

That audio gotta be somewhere on the interweb.

I also am just fascinated by the emergence/disemergence of leadership in times of struggle. Like who steps forward and who steps back? On this team, I have no clue. But it will be interesting to observe.

And then I watch because go dammit I wanna be there when #20 makes a shot. I do NOT wanna miss that moment.
