Did Bill Maher #Nail it?

I agree with Bill Maher easily 95% of the time, even when he punches Democrats. That was, in my opinion, his worst New Rule. I say that because of much of what he said was using the exact ways the Republicans, which he just called stupid, frame the Democrats. When he goes off on liberals, I almost always agree. Not this time. He’s pissed, and Democrats did plenty of effing themselves up, for sure, but I don’t think he pinpointed it here the way he thinks he did. Some he got right but he also got plenty wrong, again, imo.
What did he get wrong in your opinion?

I don’t know if it would have mattered. But I was curious to know if you think it would have been a good idea. It sounds as though one of your suggestions is that Democrats need to do a better job of framing the narrative in their favor.

It seems to me that embracing different forms of social media might help with that. Trump’s interview on Rogan got 50 million views. That’s a lot of free advertising.
I honestly think Democrats need to go and speak to people in states who don’t vote for them. Have conversations with people who don’t like them.

At this very moment, there is a fierce debate on BlueSky over whether the Harris campaign was hurt by Democrats failing to distance themselves from things like trans women competing in women's sports, or if the problem was the opposite--that Democrats lost support among their base because they moved to the Center.

To me, the second theory is almost head-explodingly wrong, but that take seems to be winning among the Democrats. I guess some people truly think that several million Biden voters stayed home in 2024 because Democrats were NOT supportive enough on trans women in women's sports.

I haven’t continued to follow AOC’s interactions with her constituents who voted for both her and Trump. What sorts of conclusions did she draw? It seemed like it was born out of a sense of almost disgust that her supporters would vote for Trump over Harris. But kudos to her for at least trying to turn it into a learning opportunity.

As someone who was very critical of AOC during her first couple years in office, I give her credit for the fact that she seems to be maturing as a congresswoman. I obviously don’t agree with a lot of her positions on issues, but I respect her growth.

It's true that a lot of ideas Trump voters have about Democrats are the result of intentional disinformation, but the disinformation wouldn't be as effective if Democrats clearly distanced themselves from the fringe.

It's not enough to just say "they don't reflect official DNC objectives." Most people don't know or care.

They've threatened to kill people?
What do you think will happen when he turns the US military loose on US citizens?

Do we imagine these US citizens are storming the capital?

Because if that's the case I can dig up some quotes on this forum about what some posters want to see happen.

LOL..."but what about"!!! You mean the people actively attacking police? Perhaps you can tell us when the protestors at Kent State went after those soldiers with poles and fire extinguishers and mace. I'll patiently await your next idiotic response.

LMAO. A lot of people on this board have talked ill of the leader. The fact is it is now time to repent. They are talking 2-5 years in prison for these offenses. I'll make some calls and make sure your cell is comfortable. Save us honest people money and turn yourselves in.

That was a terrible event. Wasn't it by the Ohio National guard and not the federal government? The protestors had burned down ROTC buildings and it was escalating. This was in response to Nixon and Cambodia. Vietnam War created a lot of discontent and impacted way too many lives.

Stop adding relevant context to the discussion.

The biggest issue the Dems have/ hadis that they don’t relate currently to the real issues- like thinking Taylor Swift and Oprah are going to turn the tide. Dems are also too weak I. The face of the MAGA movement. Too worried about losing the far -woke- left. Which sadly I think did occur for Harris - I do think there were a large number of Dem voters who abstained or maybe even voted for the Turdrump. Harris was only concerned about call Trump bad. The Dem platform was tone deaf and they couldn’t undue the sunami message in the media and on the ground that the MAGATs ran.

It’ll be interesting to see how the debate settles and which direction the party goes.

Personally, I think I overestimated the number of Anyone But Trump voters like me who didn’t really care about the Democrats’ policy positions because the first priority was keeping Trump out of the White House. Clearly (and sadly) we weren’t enough to carry the day, so the Dems will have to adjust their approach.

You think regular army would have handled it better? No...it wasn't escalating The Guard was trying to drive the students...somewhere...and got themselves into a box on the practice field. They retreated back up the hill by Taylor Hall and suddenly turned and opened fire. There were no students near them. They were never attacked beyond having their own tear gas canisters thrown back at them and they reported having rocks thrown at them - no guardsman was injured. Of the 13 students shot and wounded, only one was within 100 feet of the Guard. One other student was a little over 100 feet away. The rest were 200 feet to over 700 feet away.

Only faulty gator tries harder to be funny than butters. But butters mostly steals content from Parker, since he’s not witty enough to come up with anything on his own. Because of that, he will never top faulty, since faulty actually tries original content.

During the day on May 2, students helped clean up the damage downtown. More rumors flew about the threat of radical activity. At about 8:00 pm some 1,000 individuals gathered at the ROTC building, which some of the demonstrators then set on fire. As firefighters sought to contain the blaze, demonstrators pulled at and slashed fire hoses. With the conflagration burning out of control, elements of the National Guard arrived on the scene and cleared the area.

It was awful and should have never happened. Just shows the impact of what war can do to countries. The protests and the craziness of 1968 thankfully did have an impact on withdrawing from Vietnam. Nixon started removing troops in 1969 after the escalation by LBJ.

Most people who hate The Green New Deal haven’t read it. It’s not scary.

Agreed. Talking with people is always more productive than talking about them. But they need to listen more than lecture. That's where they lost people this time around.

That's what's wrong with society as a whole (regardless of political affiliation) Social media has given people a false sense of importance. Everybody thinks they have something important to say...but very few make the effort to really listen to others.

Probably should start with the 6 swing states in which you lost. Bill Maher says it perfectly for you. That's exactly why dims are hated. Right there in the pudding for ya.

The older I get, the more I realize this [me] former old school Republican is now just an old school Liberal (not this new fangled, far left progressive type). ...which, from where I sit, looks like a slightly right leaning or slightly left leaning, middle of the road moderate (depending on the issue at hand).

"I think the so-called conservative is today what was, in the classic sense, the liberal. The classical liberal, during the Revolutionary time, was a man who wanted less power for the king and more power for the people. He wanted people to have more say in the running of their lives and he wanted protection for the God-given rights of the people. He did not believe those rights were dispensations granted by the king to the people, he believed that he was born with them. Well, that, today, is the conservative."

-Ronald Reagan, Interview as Governor of California, 1973

I’m closer to WHAT SHOULD BE THE MIDDLE, than most people think. I’m just far more fearful of billionaires and MAGA than I am of the people on the far left. I didn’t realize Jimmy Carter said 7 years ago that we were in an oligarchy and not a democracy. Citizens United effed us hard.

The people on the far left are simply just jealous they aren't also billionaires.

Aside from being attacked, they weren't attacked.

NYT levels of cognitive dissonance.

I agree. I suppose that’s the only way you can justify your stupidity is by compartmentalizing pretty much everything. Throwing tear gas canisters back at people who fired them at you somehow equals what your maggot brethren did on 1/6. That’s a cognitive dissonance the size of the Grand Canyon. A prerequisite for backing Trump, though, so hardly surprising.

Compartmentalizing pretty much everything, indeed.

You think rioters should be able to throw tear gas at police, and you're trying to justify it. Good job.

The democrat agenda is an issue and Bill is correct about it. However, it doesn't consider a lot of factors. There are some things the brought on by the republicans.
1. Destruction of mainstream media.-How do the dems battle the republicans outright lies? The misinformation machine of the republican party has been amazing. The economy is not bad. Prices are higher but so are wages.
2. They have framed the dems around issues that I am not so convinced are significant. Trans issues are a good examples. Republicans spent $134 per trans person or 215 million. Yet, it is called a dem issue.

it seems HORT is disproportionately left and hardcore left than reality. If you spend 5 minutes on this board, you can see it's a very different place than the real world. When people like myself were complaining that the Dems didn't give us a better option than Harris, we were rebuffed, mocked, etc. The truth is, she was just such a bad, tone deaf, candidate that Trump was able to win the popular vote. It wasn't all only Cheeto Jesus will save us people either.
