Did Josh Jackson get jobbed ??

Believe I read, maybe Pat Harty who says that the kid that won the
Jim Thorpe had 1 INT.

Josh had 7 plus a few touchdowns ???

Come on, man

GO HAWKS :)

Yes, but Fitzpatrick is a 3 year started from Alabama and considered a potential top 10 draft pick...

The Tide D only faced 766 snaps. Also, your stat sheet won't be so gaudy when teams try to stay away from you. Don't get me wrong, I think that Jackson is deserving of recognition ... however, I don't think that there is a clear-cut metric for determining the impact of a player.

QBs tend to dominate Heisman races ... and yet air-raid QBs rarely seem to be in the mix, even though their stats are incredibly gaudy.

This is clearly not about a player. It's about the success of the team.

It's disgusting to me that JJ did not win when his production far exceeded the competition. I really hope JJ and the Outlaw lead Iowa to a punishing victory over BC in the bowl game.

I think if it was all based on stats, then sure. I didn't watch Bama, but I am assuming most teams didn't even try to throw his way all year. Much like King his senior year.

True, but is that the criteria for the award? If thats the case, then King should have won it back to back. Jackson was the biggest playmaker in any secondary this season hands down. Would have been so cool to see past Iowa DB Bob Stoops present the trophy to JJ, and hear the announcer say,"This is Iowa's second Thorpe award in the last three years".

Maybe. You know who else got jobbed? Whoever Scherff beat out for the Outland his senior year, when he was injured and awful when he tried to come back instead of sitting out (made that backup ISU D lineman the National Defensive Player of the Week!). But he got it because he was "supposed" to get it going into the year. Not necessary fair, but that's how it works. And team record should impact it some as well, which is why King won the Thorpe two years ago against guys with better numbers, only then Iowa fans defended it by saying the other teams weren't throwing to his side (as if teams don't do the same thing against other good DBs) so he couldn't get as many picks.

How does any individual fan think they truly know the best defensive back in the country?

Coaches who watch tons of film can't exactly pinpoint who the best player is.

So, it is a popularity contest. The Bama guy is more popular.

Pressure from the DL has a big effect on coverage. It doesn't appear Alabama had the athletes on defense this year they have had in the past. I think Iowa's DBs will get a big boost from the DL the next couple of years.

No, it isn't but playing for Alabama get's you the benefit of the doubt over actual statistics. They probably said more went into it than statistics and how teams game plan away from them yada yada.

Or maybe they watched Jackson have some issues in zone coverage. likely not all his fault but a couple of plays against Nebraska maybe left an impression on them. He pulls down the near interception in that game, maybe that is the memory the voters take from it.

Exactly. To be among the finalists is a great honor. Hard to beat out the Alabama guy who was well known going into the year and plays for a team that went 11-1 and in the playoff.

Not many people had better numbers then King in 2015 . He led the nation in interceptions with 8 right up to the last week. And it wasn't just the number, of picks King had, but how crucial they were, especially in games against Wisconsin, and Pitt. Jackson led the nation almost start to finish in passes defended, broken up, and interceptions with 7, while the guy who won the award had only one pick I believe. Pretty big discrepency. Schereff had a couple of sub par games coming back in literally two days from meniscus surgery, but he settled in and was a dominate lineman when he returned to health. His ability to attack defenders at the second and third level, set him apart from most college lineman.

Yes he got bamboozled! ESPN has been in love with Fitzpatrick for 2 years. Establishment could not wait to fawn all over another Bama player and hand him the prize over a more qualified player.

Josh is an outstanding player, probably a 1st round pick, but to say he was jobbed is a stretch.

Minkah Fitzpatrick is also a safety, so it isn't the same as comparing him to a corner back.

Pro Football Focus scored Josh as the second highest rated defensive player in the country—regardless of position...he was robbed...
