Do Fran and his coaches not coach players to step in stop drives to the hoop

Rutgers sure had a whole lot of them, multi, many dribble drives from way out from the hoop. No players stepped in to help, draw a charge, slow down or divert the ball handler. No defensive rotation. OK, I know Fran likes to score a lot of points. The team is playing pretty good this year and has lost a couple of close ones.

But if the hawks could just make it a lot more difficult for other teams to score they would win a lot more with the offense they have.

Football has the great defense and BBall has a lackluster defense

It certainly is NOT a point of emphasis! Teams ofter go "coast to coast" vs. the Hawks. The one that drives me crazy though is Iowa's refusal to "cut off" the baseline! If you ever want to destroy a defense....any defense.....man to man or zone....just be vulnerable to a baseline drive. Iowa is a tad better about this this season....but damn, it is a glaring weakness of their team defense.

Foul avoidance

And not giving up the ‘and one” when you’re already beat.

Dix had a great play today right before half. He was beat for an easy two, but reached in and got the foul called before the shot. Rutgers went to the line missing the front end of a one and one. Iowa kept the two point lead.

Football, “lackluster” would be an improvement for the offense and basketball has an excellent offense. Not sure why the OP is comparing football to basketball though?

A lot of young players growing up never really learn how to play help d. They are fixated on their assignment. I definitely see a lot of moments where Iowa players fail to come off their man to stop a blowby layup. You should always try to turn a guaranteed layup into a kickout 3.

Sometimes you have time to just flash in and make the ball handler pick up his dribble, then go right back to your man. We don't do that enough either.

Perk got mismatched a few times yesterday around the free throw line when his man got in behind for the flush. Don't know if it's a product of the D Iowa plays but this has happened a number of times to quite a few Iowa players over the years.

Joel you do realize the majority of college coaches push their opponent to the baseline right? 'No middle' is the philosophy of a lot of college coaches in the modern game. Watch the Big 12. I don't think there are any pack line philosophies in that league. They push everything to the baseline.

HS coach here. While I understand the frustration with the lack of "help" D that Iowa plays - a lot of coaches are now allowing the 2 to not give up the open 3. Especially if the offensive player is in the corner. It's just too easy of a pass and catch if you leave that player open. The help, ideally, would come from the off-ball side, but some of Iowa's players don't do that very well (PM and Perkins to name 2).

And hawkland is right - we want to make guys go baseline - that has always been Fran's credo - and again, sometimes the help just isn't there like it's supposed to be.
