Does Coach Fran really "Coach? Teach?" During a game?

I see the guy get off the bench and yell at referees. But NEVER do I see him off the bench teaching or encouraging his players.

Not a lot of fun or swagger in our team, I think Coach Fran sucks the life out of them. Just my opinion and you can all rip my comment

he certainly hasnt taught defense the last decade
I agree. And that’s why I want Iowa to part ways with Fran. You can’t sustain success being marginally interested in defense.

The OP is still ridiculous

I have never seen this coaching staff run one set play. On either offense or defense. Not one clipboard, not one dry erase board. Too 80's, not sexy.

It appears his assistants do almost all the one to one coaching during breaks. You always see them with players pulled aside and instructing.

The OP hit the nail on the head. I watched every game and predominantly see coaches pulling players aside and coaching them up. I have NEVER seen Fran nor his staff do that. Our team defense is awful and slow. Iowa has to cut, screen and run to get open looks where the competition scores on open shots in the lane or back door to the rim. How many blocked shots do we get compared to our competition?

Then your clearly not watching. Fran, no BUT the assistants yes. Very often assistants pull individuals aside for one on ones. Yesterday saw Matt G with three players in a spirited conversation as they were leaving the huddle. I think Frans huddles with other coaches and he tells them what he wants covered, and they fan out to the groups they have most responcibility with. Not saying this is the best way, and have no idea what they cover, but they do have conversations.

If you would actually go to carver you would see that Fran coaches his players. The media seems to love his antics and portrays him as the coach that rips his guys a new asshole , then walks away and lets his assistants coach. You never see him single any player out in his tirades though. It’s his job to show the sense of urgency , get all red and such. I know some players react differently to certain styles but I prefer his way .

Allow me to clarify. When the ball is in play, when the clock is ticking, when the two teams are playing offense and defense, and I'm not talking about assistant coaches, the trainers, the waterboy or anyone else. Tell me other than Fran getting his but off the bench to YELL at a referee when have you seen him off the bench coaching his team during the live action part of a game. You know, the part where all other coaches are on their feet yelling or otherwise encouraging, coaching their players not just on their feet to moan and scream to a referee.

I've heard multiple times from different national-level analysts (e.g., Bill Raftery) that Fran runs some of the best out of bounds plays and offensive sets. And I've observed this, too, but it's interesting to hear it from those who see a lot of games coached by dozens of different coaches. I'll echo what someone else said earlier: Watch more closely.

And regarding defense, Fran's teams probably run more defenses than most teams - man, 2-3, 3-2, 1-3-1, and then their press and its many variations. His switching to zone vs Indiana was critical in the comeback win.

How ignorant are you planning on taking this? You sound pretty ridiculous already and you keep digging further…..
