I mean, this is pretty typical Fran ball, right?

Cope and seethe at the fact we own you in the only sport that matters, football. How'd the Big 12 championship go for you, champ?
How did your championship game go? You will never see another. Your success was built on the Big West which is gone forever!

Couple things. Fran always assembles a team that wins the game for 35 minutes but sadly games are 40. Peyton Sandfort stinks. He thinks he’s the man but just isn’t. He’s a one man rally killer. Why he has a green light is inconceivable. Dix is a very nice player as is freeman and Harding. I watched Sandfort get abused, as usual, defensively. He is flat out overrated and that he got 39 minutes says a lot about this team. Traore should be starting somewhere and if Pryce never sees another minute in an Iowa uniform, I wouldn’t shed a tear.

We actually have a conference with good teams in it. It only took Texas and Oklahoma leaving for you guys to even get a shot and you blew it lmao

But you might want to worry about your basketball team, you almost choked to lowly Iowa. Smells like a first round exit to me.

This was the biggest problem in the game.

He plays the 4 which means Iowa gets killed on the boards but he can't take advantage of the mismatch on the other end.

The whole thing with him is getting old fast. He's the 3rd best player on the team at best but he never comes off the floor and is always jacking up bad shots.

He's not the player that he and Fran pretend he is. He's a streaky spot up shooter not a shot maker.

This. Good shooters make open shots. Case in point ISU tonight. Payton never has and never will.

My goodness, this board is going to bite mire insufferable than the FB board! What a bunch of phuquin’ whiners here!
It is what it used to be…a long season lies ahead…Fran’s teams don’t quit…Iowa men’s basketball fans here do, however. Quit your goddamned sniveling. All of you!
Ok Joel.

Down to 91 in defense on Kenpom, which is better than the last two years, but, trending down at a quick rate.

Rebounding will not be fixed. The players on the roster are not built to be consistent rebounders
Traore was an excellent rebounder last year.

There's no excuse for playing him so few minutes. He is built to compete on the glass.

Sandfort would be so much better playing for a hard ass like a Bobby Knight or Izzo who would coach all the dumb shit out of his game vs Fran who essentially encourages the dumb shit and won't ever sit him.

iowa ran out of gas at the end. No fresh bodies down the stretch. Stupid.

Payton Sandfort shouldn’t have the green light to chuck up off-balanced 3s whenever he wants. He should have gotten the Joe Touissant treatment in the second half.

Iowa State shot uncharacteristically poor from 3 in the 1st half. Iowa was red hot and still couldn’t manage to go into the half up double digits.

Iowa is still trash on the glass. Absolutely trash. Can’t win anything of consequence when you can’t rebound.

Yes, Iowa State is good, but I don’t see much difference in talent from a lot of Hoiberg years based off this game. They are active defensively, but Iowa got pretty much any shot they wanted until they got gassed at the end. So, I don’t know. We’ll see how Iowa State does in the tournament. Hard to know in December.

I will say for my first real taste of Iowa basketball this year I was surprised they are much better athletically than I would have guessed. I’m not saying they’re great, but they are much better than what we’re used to. I will also say Brock Harding is much better than I expected.

So, yeah, valiant effort, and kudos to the kids for hanging tough, but in my view this was pretty much BAU for Fran ball.
so you liked watching Harding dribble and dribble, then end up underneath the basket with no place to go?

There were three obvious blown calls that ISU turned to make 8 points out of. That was the difference.

If ISU is a top 3 team, this Iowa team is one to get behind, not bitch about. Iowa is still young and should get better as the season progresses. Let’s all get behind them.

This is what happens when you play too many guys because you think everyone is great.
This also happens when you have a strength and conditioning program that is at high school level.

Very frustrating to watch the Hawks game after game make so many fundamental basketball mistakes. Sandforts effort on defense and chucking up ridiculous poor percentage shots should have him on the bench. Rebounding is as much about effort as it is having size and strength, imagine Bob Knight or Dean Smith, Gene Keady, etc. in a kids ear at timeouts. Harding gives 110% but his size limits his defensive capabilities and he dribbles too much side to side instead of attacking and dishing more. At least the effort is there. Maybe most disappointing early in the season is Owen Freeman playing basically soft and getting owned on the boards and defensively the effort is not real good. If he put on 20 lbs of muscle it's not noticable. At 6' 10" and a starter 8-9 boards minimum should be reachable. This game was very winnable to say the least, Mulvey should have at least been given a chance - I mean 20 offensive boards given up. The season is still early so hopefully we can see some improvement in fundamental basketball - passing instead of dribbling all over 35 feet from the basket and blocking out rebounding, and the list goes on...... Sandfort takes the team out of sync with the fast off balance shots - they usually miss and lead to a transition basket for the other team.

Fran should have been gone a while ago, for all the reasons we hear every game. That said, we all heard about how Harding will never be able to handle the guards in the big ten. He and Thelwel, handled themselves really well tonight, against one of the best guard tandems in the country, and better than any in the big ten in my opinion. Laji looked good coming off the bench to spot Freeman for a few minutes at a time. Freeman still looks out of shape, (hopefully he can play himself into shape, sooner rather than later). If Traore can get some solid minutes, we should be pretty good. That's about all we can expect with Fran as coach.

You went toe to toe for 35 min with the eventual National Champions. This was a great moral victory for Iowa!
lol…nat’l champions. I went into tonight’s game thinking isu was going to dominate Iowa. That certainly didn’t happen. Fran’s dumb/lack of substitution pattern certainly helped the clowns pull out this epic victory. 😉

Football is not the only sport that matters. Although the Big 12 championship game went poorly, you do not “own” us. You might want to check the scoreboard, dude.
I was quite surprised b4 tonite’s game to see that IA vs isu in hoops have a 5 & 5 record in their last 10 head to head match-ups. To hear some clown fans talk, you would think they are better than some NBA teams.

I thought our guards played good defense, it was our front court guys who didn’t contest drivers and didn’t hit the glass. all except Dembele. He was outstanding. Why did Fran only play him 4.5 minutes in the second half ? Owen did some good things but he has to rebound better. Does a poor job of blocking out. He seems to have a conditioning issue, there were several times in each half that he was gassed especially the last 5-6 minutes of the game. But overall the Hawks did a damm good job. They led the game for 37 minutes. They won’t face another team all season who has that much talent or that can play defense like that. I was disappointed that Fran only gave Pryce three to four minutes of playing time. He has been shooting better than Payton. We can be tough the rest of the season. Go Hawks !

Our fans need to give these guys more support. They are deserving .

I watch every game. Even exhibition.
This was Hawks best game of year. Unfortunately still not good enough. Poster who said Hawks mentally weak is correct. ISU is a better team and better coached. Hopefully get to 11-9 in conf and a shot a NCAA tournament. I do like Harding. Feel like he is looking over his shoulder though, afraid of mistakes.

So, you see this year playing out differently? Iowa is magically going to rebound, play tougher, defend, etc.? That’s how you see this playing out?

Interesting theory.

And, again, no one is bitching. I think there is a lot of apathy right now due to the obvious. And no one is putting anything on the kids. This just is, as the title clearly pointed to, typical Fran ball. Yawn.

Golly Hans…hasn’t Fran been the coach during this 5-5 stretch? Reading your previous posts regarding Fran and his lack of coaching expertise, I was under the impression that Fran was about a .300 coach and has never beaten Iowa State.

Killed on the boards. Again.
I really hate the no boxing out thing. It might be very old school, but I still think it has value for every player on the defensive end of the floor to put their backside between an offensive player and the hoop when the shot goes up.
One thing I’ve noticed in the college game going back a few years and how it’s officiated, the inside man gets called for fouls way more often than the guy getting boxed out. Over the back is pretty much a non-existent call now, and if the guy getting boxed out leaves his feet and the box out continues it’s a foul on the inside man. It’s absurd imo. Also doesn’t help the game has went so crazy on 3’s it makes for long rebounds that are harder to track, which was the case on quite a few of the offensive rebounds for isu last night

your "hot take" on brock is very poor. Brock is the best off ball defender on the team and frankly it's not even close. Off ball defense is part of defense. Too many think defense is what you do when guarding the ball.
ISU's defense is predicated on NO Middle, Brock got 2 feet in the lane countless times and kicked out for wide open threes. I'd be willing to bet Coach otz would say that was the best any pg did against their defense in quit awhile.

give it a rest dude. Fran is average at best and in those 10 years he had 2 players of the year and multiple all americans.
Last night was the first time in a long time I remember a Fran coached team play that hard on defense and play that hard in general. The result: they ran out of gas because that's not how they play regularly and Fran shortened the bench (which is what he should do more often). If he coached that kind of defensive effort more often, I wouldn't be done with him.

“give it a rest, dude” ?
Understand, UIowa got exactly what they hired when Fran came aboard. Fran is Fran. His team’s score points and his defense is often sketchy at best. Wanna go back to those nights of 42 points again?
Maybe Lute or Ralph will come back? Fran ain’t perfect but it could be a whole lot worse, too. Hawks played hard last night. My disappointment is Fran’s teams don’t rebound very well.

The ghosts of Frank Lauterbur and Todd Lickliter!

For those who partake, DRINK!

JFC. If mediocrity is the goal, then by all means extend Fran’s contract through 2040.

again with the bs lickliter defense... WTF.
LAST NITE was one of the better efforts fran's teams has given in awhile. Every metric but one said they should have won that game: rebounding.
Fran doesn't get his teams to play that hard nightly, nor does he coach defense, nor does he go get guards that can play modern basketball or an assistant coach that will help defense play at a level that may sniff the sweet 16.
You have stockholm syndrome.

Fran is still the only coach in the country that will pull a player when that player is hot. He is the only coach in the country that would make a whiney little bitch like Payton his star player, who puts up numbers against nobodies, but chokes when the big game rolls around. Fran can't go soon enough.

There is always excuses for Fran and team. The truth is, good coaches and good teams find ways to win. Fran has had some talented teams, but never a really good team simply because he’s the coach. Last night in the last 10 minutes, Iowa State adjusted, locked down their defense, and Iowa took on the personality of their coach and played pussy ball.

I know I looked at it a few years ago but fran's win % in games decided by 5 points was turrible.

I think his point is there is a lot of apathy. I will watch much more of the women’s games than the men’s games. I’m not going out of my way to watch Fran’s bunch do the same bullshit every game.
