I love Joe’s game. He’s active, a good outside shooter, a good driver at times and a solid rebounder and defender. But then I keep hearing announcers talk about what a great talent he is and then all of the speculation that he might turn pro after this season. Joe is a good college player. He might eventually be a great college player. But to succeed in the pros, you need to be a great one-on-on player, an exceptional outside shot or in a position to make others better directly, like a tall post player or crafty point guard. Joe is none of these things. Joe is a great complementary player on a team with established stars, in Iowa’s case, Luka and JBo. No disrespect. Just saying that another year when he will be the “man” might really show the type of player he could become. That would get him a tryout at the next level.

Not sure what Joe will do, but I think we have seen the ceiling for him, and I don't say that to be negative at all. Joe is a Good athlete, but not a great athlete like the wings you see play in the league. Just one mans opinion. I think he CAN make it on somebodies bench, but I think more likely he could make some good $ in Europe playing if someone can find a slot for him, Remember that Euro teams can only have so many US players on them, so they have to fill a specific need, or in the case of someone like Luka be able to easily get dual citizenship with his moms connections. You also have to consider that Joe W is already engaged to Mac Meyer, so there are numerous things to consider for their future.

This is why I struggle with the NBA. When I think of a next level player, it’s someone who consistently dominates...which the only player on this yrs team would be Garza. But according to scouts he’s a second rounder at best. I like Joe’s game but he disappears into the background at times.

Certainly,.. He's a team guy and he's not yet that hot of an NBA prospect anyway...

I don’t think Joe has reached his ceiling yet. He is still working on a lot of aspects of his game extremely hard. Just because he doesn’t post his intense workouts on social media doesn’t mean he’s not working like crazy (he is). That said if he wants a chance in the nba he still needs to be a 3 and D guy who gives 100% at all times.

And this is the guy who tested NBA waters 2 years ago for feedback? Part of Joe is being on a team with sooo many offensive weapons. We all love the three ball but I also loved how Aaron White could consistantly take people off the dribble and score or get fouled or both. Yes they are two different players I know. Joe either needs a few more plays ran for him each game or be a bit more controlled selfish with the basketball on offense. We sometimes dribble into trouble.

I'm not saying that Joe W isn't putting in the work, far from it. Just saying thats only going to get him so far. The same problem that Luka has and nobody works harder then him. I look at Joe W as kind of a poor mans Utoff, only 4 inches shorter. And he's struggled to carve out a niche in the league.

He may or may not stay but IMO her should stay. His decision making with the ball is very questionable at times. And as others have stated he disappears too often during games.

IMO, he is not yet ready for the NBA. He is talented but needs more polish. He has to learn how to drive without getting his shot blocked consistently at the rim. I think he can with more experience. His free throws have me somewhat concerned this year.

where are you seeing Joe projected as a 2nd rounder?

Yeah I remember Joe's comments in a podcast last summer making it sound an awful lot like this would be his last run with the Hawks

Garza actually is moving up some draft boards. Saw him going 36 in one draft and 32nd in another. Joe W not even in the top 107 in the mock draft that had Luka going 36. I honestly haven't heard any announcers talking about him going pro. I've heard more guys talk about Nunge going pro than Joe, as Dakich was saying the other day. Not sure about that but is what it is. Kispert from Gonzaga is what Joe I guess would hope to be moving forward, and maybe next year he could get closer to that. Just way to inconsistent at this time. Nice college player and will have a nice 4 year career at Iowa followed by some time in Europe.

I mean this in the nicest way possible.. but where does he go next year if not iowa? He could go to Europe but that same exact amount of money would be available the following year
I’m sure he could have an opportunity to develop himself further in the GLeague. If he’s looking to hit payday straight out of college, it’s not happening in the States though

I'm not sure. He needs to find a niche or a specific role if he wants to make the NBA. Never say never. Like who thought Duncan Robinson would be a solid rotation player for the Miami Heat? That guy didn't even start and averaged 9 PPG at Michigan, but he will be playing in the NBA for next 10 years.

To me it would be strange if he didn't come back. It would mean he's not having much fun playing for the hawks because he doesn't have too many options. The same options will always be there.

Things like this really make me wonder why utoff hasn’t stuck in the nba yet

Just a comment. Kispert appears to be more of a pure shooter. JoeW hasn't proven he has a consistent 3pt shot imho. Last year his 3pt shooting disappeared and when I look at players with pure strokes JBO and Fredrick stand out...JoeW not so much. As mentioned int the thread, JoeW is a good athlete, but he is nothing special athletically by NBA standards.

I have no problem with JoeW being ready to move on and try to get paid. If it were me, I think I would have loved playing college B-ball. If I had been blessed with JoeW talent and I'd stick around, but JoeW seems to have higher aspirations in mind and is appears anxious to move on. I have zero inside information so JoeW could surprise fans and stick around 1 more year. Either way, I would be rooting for JoeW success.

Wasn't Mackenzie trying to get into Dental school was it? IF so, did she get in at Iowa? If she did, then I definitely would say that Joe will be back

This is what I think too, If she gets into the U of I Dental school, I see him staying. If she doesn’t, then maybe he opts for Europe or G-League. It would be very surprising to me if he’d make an NBA roster next year.

I hope he comes back. He’s a definite asset while Patrick, Kris M, & Sandfordt gain a valuable year of experience.

Where do you get the feeling he is anxious to move on? I don’t get that feeling at all. He’s a pretty reserved guy.

Duncan Robinson shot 47% from 3 last year which is incredible in the NBA. Not a great athlete but clearly knows how to get his shot off. 13.5 pts a game.

Two different games when comparing college and nba. NBA is more about winning one on one matchups and even as dominant as luka is in college, he’s not 7 foot and he doesn’t really play above the rim like nba bigs. This puts him at a disadvantage if he’s down low. Having a 3 point shot helps open up opportunities though. Think he could be a decent bench player for the right team though.
