I know there was some recent debate about disqualification (see Marstellar vs Cooper match), and I don't recall if that was ever settled, so.............................

It appears they took away Sammy Brooks pin against Pestano from ISU after it was determined Pestano should have been DQ'd earlier in the match when racking up his 5th stalling call (not sure when that was determined).

6 team points were awarded with the Fall or the DQ.

I saw that and wondered how long it took the officiating crew to make that determination. Should have been instantaneous in a perfect world. Whose responsibility is it to keep track?

I think they should leave it as-is. Not sure if he would have racked up that many stalls if Frost knew the rule. I thought he was a little quick on the trigger with Pestano. He wasn't so much stalling as he was completely outclassed.

Andy Hamilton's write up for the DM Register:

Brooks pinned Dane Pestano with 15 seconds left in the third period, but officials later ruled it a win by disqualification after realizing Pestano had been called for stalling a fifth time earlier in the period.

Can't believe that college level officials lost track of this. I did not get to watch the match, but I'd imagine the coaches knew this at the time as well. Perhaps TnT wanted to let Brooks build confidence in trying to secure the fall? Not sure. But just like keeping track of cautions and riding time, this is an easy thing that the scoring table and additional ref should be keeping up with. Can you imagine what would have happened if Brooks gets caught and pinned freakishly and then they have to go back and rectify the situation because they forgot how many stall calls were issued?

Just weird...

Score keeper ran out of fingers.

It is the scorekeeper's job. At the time I though Valholl had perhaps added a SW in his PBP, or if I wasn't clear on the rules, because I was wondering why a DQ hadn't been called.

I wouldn't be so sure of that.

Yeah, I think coaches lose track of pretty much anything that isn't on the scoreboard; there's too many other things going on. But the scorekeeper absolutely should have caught it. Possibly they knew it but were afraid they might have miscounted and were slow to say anything for fear of stopping the match prematurely.

Oftentimes one of the assistant coaches will track the score of the match...at least I have seen that plenty of times in HS. I assume there is someone doing the same in a college match.

Seriously? How could they not know that? Isn't stall #4 a 2 point infraction? That's like the warning track in baseball. I'm still having a hard time believing the refs AND the coaches forgot or lost count...
It's 2 points in high school. Not so certain about NCAA but I think after the warning the next 3 are all 1 point. I could be wrong though.

Maybe the coaches knew and wanted to see Sammy get the pin. Why ask for the match to be stopped when your guy is dominating it?? And we weren't exactly in need of DQ bonus points to win the dual. I'm glad it didn't get stopped because it was pretty dang fun to watch!!

I think if the dual was competitive it wouldn't have been missed by anyone. But due to the fact it was a blowout and Brooks was dominating this guy, combined with the all 1 pointers until DQ, its a little more easy to lose track than in HS, not saying it's acceptable, this is division 1 college wrestling, but I can understand it.

I thought this thread was going to answer the question as to why Marsden got DQ'd in the recent dual meet.

As for DQ by way of stalling, I think it would be very helpful to make the last one 2 points before the DQ just to make sure it doesn't get missed, not to mention that anyone who has earned 4 stalling calls deserves to have the last one worth 2 points.

Per a Mat.com article....................

Marsden, a senior who finished eighth at the 2014 NCAA Championships, was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty late in the match for what appeared to be an inappropriate verbal comment. After a buzzer-beating takedown, Marsden and Macki had an additional exchange that led official Rick Fink to disqualify Marsden, thus leading to a suspension for the Cowboys’ next competition.

Marsden used a heavy leg while untangling from an out of bounds scramble. The flagrant would never have been called on him if earlier he hadn't lipped off to the ref when being warned for a head slap. Marsden put himself in the ref's cross hairs and paid the price.

This is a good learning opportunity for our guys. Just imagine if that had happened during the conference tournament.
