Yes, the game was a bit different back then but whether it was technique or consistent effort Tom Davis and his coaching staff had the rebounding thing figured out. This IOWA team does not.

The ball just doesn't seem to bounce our way enough.

Play zone and sag in. You always have five bodies around the hoop.

It’s also why teams always seem to be hot from 3 point line.

Throughout Dr. Tom’s time, rebounding was always a priority and point of emphasis.

Dr Tom never started 4 guards in same lineup....
Maybe that’s why they rebounded better than Frans current team...?

Bingo! Dr. Tom traded opponent 3s for rebounds. It made him popular with opponent shooters, but would be a really bad trade today. Pete Lisicky’s dad told me years ago at a Big Ten tourney that his son’s favorite team to play was Iowa. This came as no surprise.

There’s a special place in Hawkeye Hell for Pete Lisicky.

Dr. Tom did good on defense but then was never smart enough to drop the full court press when facing a team with one or two really great guards that would break the press easily and then make an easy lay up....He seemed to live or die with the press!!!

Only slightly OT. Anyone hear Jay Bilas Saturday night in the the MSU/MD game waxing nostalgic for the Tom Davis shot lob? I was hoping that he would then dissect the Weenie Wheel delay game.

Evidenced by giving up 119 and 118 points in back to back games.

Right, 5 guys around the hoop who struggle to find a body to block out. Iowa doesn't give up open 3s because they play zone and "sag in", they give them up because they don't rotate quickly enough and/or have guys get lost in the zone and start floating around where they shouldn't be.

Actually, the former coach who was the rebounding guru was George Raveling. He literally wrote a book about it.

Thanks a lot. I haven't thought of the UNLV game in months and you had to bring up leaving the press on when we are getting beaten like a drum by the other team.
