Dubuque private school raises tuition by 58% after voucher expansion

Seems like you'll see a lot of this early on.

Question to anyone who knows: what does a district get per student normally (vouchers aside)?

I attended parochial schools my entire young life, so I'm not against them (at all).

If the goal was "competition", they should have realized that private schools now have an unfair comptetive advantage because they get the state voucher money plus they can charge a premium for the student tuition (double dip).

If they had passed a voucher payment of, say, $3,900 (only half of the $7,800), it stil would have been popular and helped the private school parents, but the current setup is excessive, and this is unnecessarily depriving the public school system.

Popular? If I recall something like 2/3 of Iowans were against it.

If the voucher had been $3,900, then tuition would have increased $3,900. It's simply indirect funding for private schools and does nothing for parents.

I'm not against private schools either. But the word "private" should mean something - like no government money.

The private schools get all of the benefits of state funding without any of the accountability. Anyone touting this as making public schools more competitive is not smart.

"Popular" with the people who supported it. Half would have been something for them. Half would have been a compromise position without it being a gut punch to the public system.

I'd rather give up only half an apple than the whole apple. Wouldn't you?

If you were a hard liner on vouchers, I hate to break it to you, but we lost the battle.

You mean, like our governor and legislature?

Bingo.
Yes. Our district just met with two local legislators last week. One of them voted against it and is not a bad guy, but the other guy who voted in favor of the voucher scam knew so little about school finance that it was embarrassing.

Our admin team was pretty much in shock after the meeting, but he just got easily reelected so these are the people we have to deal with. Republicans around here only care about keeping Rs in office, not what is actually good for the state.

I'm sorry this is a terrible stance. By compromising on this you are conceding that Private schools should get public funding. Now you're just arguing on how much funding they should get.

Vouchers are not popular now and will only get less popular when the communities start to feel their impact.

At the end of the day, I'm NOT supportive of $7,800+ being given across the board.

But I think it's important to take the full measure of this. The leftwing tilt in public schools has gone unchecked. From administrators to teachers to the unions, the accounts are well docuemented. The denials from the left just make the situation worse.

Bad conduct sometimes yields bad policy.

If your knowledge of what is going on in public schools is anything like your knowledge of school finance, I think we've heard enough from you on this topic.

Well, sure. But that's kind of like saying I'd rather the Iowa football team lose 1/2 their games than all of them. Neither is acceptable to me.

LOL...every single word of this is horseshit from first to last.

Clearly, somebody failed with your education along the way. Probably too busy getting you to salute a LGBTQ flag or praising Mao.

The entire purpose of this program is to get public money into the hands of religious organizations. Schools are raising tuition to match the public money coming in from the state. That increased tuition offsets completely the money the church’s contributed to the schools.

So the church’s have more money to spread their religious jihad.

Our local private school is connected to a church. They are planning a $3 million expansion project, partly for the school and partly for the church.

Mind you, this is the same church that was sending letters to everyone in our three communities openly begging for money because they could hardly keep the lights on. That was less than 3 years ago. I wonder what changed?

School board elections are deeply flawed. They shouldn't be held in off years when only a tiny percentage of the electorate shows up. That being largely teachers, their family and friends.

If you don’t care enough to vote you must not have a strong say in the future education of your kid.

And this works both ways. How many school boards have been taken over by Moms for Liberty or whatever the group is called.

And as far as I know, school boards have no real say when elections are held.

No $ left in Dbq. Got to pay for all those huge million dollar judgments against the pedophiles.

Whose fault was a that? Also, are you complaining about hindrances and low voter turnout out now,
