Dunk the damn ball!

How many times have we seen Iowa's big men timidly miss a lay-in when they could have dunked? Far too many to count over the last four years, and Woody did it again last night. Great pass for an easy bucket, so Woody goes to lay it in off the glass--only it gets BLOCKED! Dunk the damn ball, people!

Stupid post is stupid.

+1
3.5 years later and folks act like Woody makes a conscious decision to not dunk, as if he has the option available to him at all times at the snap of a finger. Sure, there are times when wide open that he can, but in traffic with limited run up or ability to gather himself, it simply isn't an option.

All you gotta do is hit the 'X' button on the controller. Pretty simple.

Wasn't able to watch; please tell me he didn't get rimjected.
He was fouled. No brainer call considering Iowa blocked 3 of their dunk attempts later in the game and a couple were pretty ticky tack, especially the call on MG. Oh well , it was the beginning of the game and the refs were letting them play. Dunk it, lay it in, could care less as long as it's 2 points.

Give it a rest with the Woodbury not dunking thing.
He has short arms and a hard time getting much off the ground especially if you're asking him to do it quickly.
He will continue to play defense, clog the middle, and be an above average passer for a big man.
Unless you enjoy pounding your head against a wall, I'd let this one go.

Woody was the example. Many of Iowa's bigs are guilty of the same thing. If the ball went in the basket when they try their soft lay-ins, no problem. But too often it doesn't. That's a problem that was noted on this board multiple times last season, and the same things are still happening. What's stupid is missing all those bunnies because it adds up to losing games that should have been won. Iowa's bigs, for the last several years, have consistently played soft around the rim, and there's no excuse for it.

Doubling down? I raise one Aaron White.

Woody can and has dunked before, he just usually chooses the soft lay-ins (at this point possibly just to piss people off). UNI's Eglseder was the same way a few years back.

He can dunk off of 1 foot with a running start. He did so off of his own steal earlier this year. What he cannot do is catch and go off two feet to hammer it down. He got hung on this type of play against Minnesota two years ago. He cannot physically finish the way Baer has at the rim the past two games (catch in traffic or on the break and rise off of two feet).
Woody's best plays at the rim are the quick flips and reverse lay ins he has been doing this year. Really, this year at least, he has been much more efficient with finishes when he has NOT tried to dunk the ball.

The OP is asking Woody to do something he physically can't do. He got packed by a guard last night.
He has small arms and hands and a 2 inch vertical. If we lower the rims to 9 ft. He can phi slamma jamma all day long.
Unfortunately, Division 1 has 10ft rims.

Now you're just making stuff up to distract from the original stupid post.

Every basketball player dunks when ever realistically possible, its pretty much that simple.

Woody was 3 of 4 last night. The stupidity of some Iowa hoops fans is profound.

You realize that Woody is shooting 57% from the field this year, right?

Agree that expecting him to dunk more frequently than a couple times per year is asking too much. I am disappointed that he has not developed any offensive skills going into his senior season.

Last year was a surrender IMO for him ever being a post player when he showcased the 15 foot jumper. We haven't seen that this year, so it is either the slip screen layup or free throws. Nice that he is a good passer, but I am not looking for a 5 who is a great distributor. Catch, dunk, block shots and rebound. Leave assists to the guards. This is like recruiting a kicker who misses field goals, but has great hands.

Ahhhh he is averaging nearly 9ppg and shooting at a 57% clip.

And that is where your bar is set for a senior who came in with all his accolades? Where was he against ISU in the second half or against Drake? I will never refute that Woodbury gives 110% all the time, but he has 0 post presence on either end of the court. He is not a shot blocker / changer and we cannot feed him in the post. Props to him for improving his free throw percentage to almost 85% I think, but by year 4 I had hoped we would be talking about more than his passing skills.

This has more to do with the type of offense Fran runs versus limitations to Woody's game. We absolutely could feed him in the post more if that is what Fran wanted to run but he elects to run a system that has Woody 15-20ft from the basket setting screens more often than not. Its too bad Fran wasn't able to sign a true post player that was a freshman or sophomore this year that could be backing up Woody, allowing Dom to play the 4 exclusively. I still think our best lineup would be Gesell, Jok, Uthoff, Uhl and Woody, but without a true center to back up Woody, Fran has to use Uhl in a backup role at the 5.

1. If anyone was paying attention during his recruitment you could see he wasn't ever going to be a dominate offensive player.

2. True on the shot blocker point but he changes plenty of shots and is really really good at defending the post position one on one. A really good hedger for his size and fronts his man in the post incredibly well.

I am confident that if Fran believed he could post up, we would feed the post. Woodbury does a lot of things well, but when he posts up, he plays 6'4 by holding the ball at his waist, being too deliberate and opting to dribble baseline instead of going strong to the hoop. He could help himself by making quicker decisions to pass or shoot. I think he is capable of more, just seems to lack the confidence.

Woody plays good defense, rebounds well, he hustles, and from all the people who wish he could dunk on demand, I think Woody himself would be at the top of that list. He is what he is. Leave him alone.
