Hey Guys,

Looking to make the trip to East Lansing Friday. Can anyone give me any tips on things to do on Friday night and then better yet the best place to tailgate Saturday. Thanks and Go Hawks!

Normally you could salmon fish. They run from the lake inland this time of year. The rivers are so low this year though, it's not going to happen. Per the Orvis stores in both GR and EL.

My experience in East Lansing is go somewhere else.

If you like USDA Prime, Capital Prime is very good, with prices to match. Nothing out of the ordinary, you aren't going to get Kobe or Wagyu there, but their prime is actually prime, and it's very good.

I know nothing about the party scene. We usually golf or fish the Friday before game day, try to find a high end steak place, and relax. Which is essentially what we'll do this year.

It's been awhile since we've played there, but I'm almost certain parking is a challenge.

It's probably too early, but you might catch some decent fall colors on the way there depending on the route you take, and if it's that time of year yet, which I don't think it is.

Good to know on the parking. I have been looking around but haven't found much. It looks like the lots won't open until about 9:00.

I don't remember where it was but I remember tailgating at an elementary school. It was pretty far away from the stadium and we got our football stuck in a tree. I remember finding it difficult to find a spot to tailgate when we got there.

PS- game sucked. It was the one where Shonn Greene was stopped on 4th and 1.

Shoot it sounds like it will be a challenge then to find a good spot. Hopefully it will be a hawks victory at the very minimum.

Lansing is a city with an interesting population mix. Strong blue collar population working for the big 3 car makers and other manufacturers, tens of thousands of college students on one of the B10's bigger campuses, and thousands of government workers and lobbyists in the capitol city of a large state.

I lived in Lansing for a year and a half back in the late 80's. Never attended a football game but did party in a few campus bars occasionally. I'll say this, I got more tail in East Lansing than any other place I've lived. A couple of the house parties I attended..... my god the shit I witnessed in that town. /csb/

They’re slaying the salmon in GR.. that Orvis Guy fibbed!

Hope your right. We're going to the lower Grand, and we were going to fly cast for small mouth.

You’ll probably will do ok of course every thing warmed up last week into early this week and is now cooling down again but they were still catching good numbers of salmon in the Grand at Grand Rapids to the lake and small mouth might have pick up with warm streak.

MSUs stadium is on campus and most tailgating happens on campus. Public lots open at 9 if you plan on driving a carto tailgate. Just google MSU gameday info and a site with a campus map and where you can park will pop up. You can also park at the large commuter lots and catch a shuttle.

Downtown EL isn't huge but Beggars Banquet has really good food and Peanut Barrel for burgers. There are other bars and restaurants in the downtown area to check out if you want. They are all close to each other. We also have a an amazing on campus dairy store.

Here is the site I figured I'd link it. https://gameday.msu.edu/index.html

If you are travelling with a female, purses and handbags of any size are PROHIBITED from the stadium and they will NOT be allowed entry.

Are you driving a car to a lot to tailgate or care free? How many people? I can help answer where to park because parking on campus is a cluster--there really aren't many options off campus if you want to set up a traditional tailgate.

Where are you staying?

Lansing has changed quite a bit from the 80s as the Buick factory among other manufacturing jobs have closed/left the city. South Lansing has turned into a wasteland because of that. The downtown area of Lansing has seen a good amount of development and is worth checking out if you are in town and so is Old Town Lansing.

Dammit! Now I'm hungry for soft serve!!

You cant leave it at that. Have to provide details or pics. Thems the rules
The late 80's was the heyday for cocaine and Lansing seemed to have an ample supply. I discovered that women, girls you would not suspect, would do just about anything in exchange for a long line of coke, even in public.... since this is a family site, I will not get into some of the pornographic details.

I've heard people mention steakhouses--Lansing doesn't really have that many great steakhouses but Troppo downtown Lansing is where I would go. Might be best overall 'finer dining' type restaurant in Lansing.

Want some of the best food in Lansing and my personal favorite restaurant? Go to this place in Old Town Lansing (old town cool little area). "Southern BBQ and Carnivore Cuisine" is their slogan and I know us Midwesterners like our meat. ;)

Want an excellent breakfast Saturday or Sunday morning? Go to Golden Harvest (cash only) or Soup Spoon Cafe.

Problem is with a home game places might be really busy.

Planning on driving a car to tailgate and would like to have a traditional tailgate grilling/adult beverages. I saw the closest public lot is alcohol free. Will be staying in East Lansing Friday night.

Definitely park on campus then. It's $20 to park. Just plan to get there between 9-10 am. Good tailgating there. Open container allowed on campus on game day but not off campus. Lots of parking available. MSU is a huge campus so you'll have a little hike to the stadium. I've tailgated on south and east side of campus. Get there early and look for a place near parking where you can set up shop in the grass is my best advice.

Would second the above suggestions: Peanut Barrel - busy on game day though.
Meat - really good BBQ
Breakfast - do Soup Spoon Cafe. Golden Harvest isn't for everyone. Hour wait in line outside. Loud inside. Still my favorite breakfast place in the world but I wouldn't bring everybody there or do it before a long day of tailgating.
Hopcat- worth checking out if you like craft beer

I tailgate on the east side with friends but it's because our daughters live on that side of campus.

Go Hawks

I was thinking of parking in the public lot in the biology/natural resources part of campus (SE of the stadium). Will that still have open spots around 11am?

Can you give me an area on campus where to go? Never been to East Lansing before.
SOUTH SIDE:
If you head down Trowbridge Ave into MSU campus - south side of campus - there is a parking ramp marked Public Ramp 5 that gives you covered parking (probably not needed this weekend - but nice when it rains).

From there - there is green space headed west of Public Safety that you can tailgate in - but you have to haul your stuff a little bit. Short walk north to the Stadium and lots of portajohns by 56 on the linked map.

NORTH-EAST SIDE:
Head into EL on Grand River Ave. Turn into campus on either Collingwood or the next street over. Park in the parking area for Snyder dorm or push more into the center of campus. Lots of greenspace to the south by the river.

Pro to this area -- you can walk downtown (Grand River Ave) before the game. This area is right on the edge of campus so it is a little quieter tailgate.

The map does not show all of the available parking. You will find surface lots everywhere. So long as you get anywhere on campus early - you will be in good shape.

That ramp will probably have spots available still around 11. But I don't really know because my crew is always there right at opening to grab our same spot.
