It's hard to say, and to a large degree it depends what part of the state you live in. People from western Iowa spent much of their lives hearing about how awesome Nebraska is. They still do, but now it's just pathetic and sad. Many people from the QC grew up with a good hatred for Illinois when Illinois was consistently pretty good. Over the past decade or so, Iowa has been better than Minnesota. Last year the Gophers thought it was their turn but left Kinnick with a loss. Iowa State's football program is on the rise but still hasn't beaten Iowa for a while and their basketball program looks to be falling off. Wisconsin is the team that has typically been a notch above Iowa in both football and hoops and, while I can't speak for others, that was definitely the most satisfying win for me this season.

A lot of western iowa folks would probably say nebraska.

minnesota fans loves to chant “who hates iowa” when their team is getting housed on the field by teams not named iowa.

i only give a rats behind about iowa state the week of the game. Iowa state fans are insufferable year round if they win that one.

I would say wisconsin. typically going into the season, Iowa knows it will have to beat Wisconsin to have a chance to get to Indy.

its fun seeing the teams listed get humiliated, however

This is where I think my mistake was. I can tell most people hate Nebraska.

their fans like to puff their chest about their 5 titles back in the 90s and prior when they only bad to play oklahoma.

if i cared about the quantity of championships that happened a long time ago, i would be more impressed with minnesota’s seven titles.

Biggest rival competitive wise Wisconsin
Biggest rival can't stand'em wise Nebraska.
I think many Nebraska fans are actually beginning to accept that they will never be what they were in the 90s. On the other hand, after Iowa State's big bowl win against #25 Oregon, I anticipate hearing even more s*** about how they would have beaten Iowa this year, sort of like we heard before the game last year.

There are longstanding three-way rivalries between Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Iowa State of course is a rival. The rivalry with Nebraska is most important to western Iowans and those of us who live in Nebraska, but I would otherwise rank it behind the other schools I mentioned.
Iowa-Minnesota-Wisconsin:The Triumvirate of Hate.

Probably the best (and only?) 3-way rivalry in college sports.

In Iowa and the B1G? Are you stupid? Never mind, don’t answer that.

It’s a very specific crowd and relatively speaking a very small segment of the population.

As stated in the past, 95% of Iowa fans don’t give two shits about the outcome of a wrestling match.

Wisky bro. WTH

We didn’t play Nebby or ISU for what 300 years. Why would they be a rival?

This is all very confusing.

You people can't even agree on who your biggest rival is!

No wonder this board is such a shi!tshow.

It's really complex, as dumb as that sounds. I'm actually going to give you the best answer I can:

1- Iowa St. is our natural rival. We are obviously a small state (31st in pop) and we fight over recruits. Iowa has frankly dominated recruting in the state for kids that don't go to Alabamas, Ohio States or if in the western part of Iowa- Nebraska. It was shocking to see a 5* kid grow up a Hawk fan pick Iowa St. in Xavier Foster for basketball last year... especially because he is a big! Iowa usually gets all the better recruits in the state but both football and basketball are getting much better for hs prospects so ISU is picking up better recruits out of the state.

It's also finally to the point where Iowa St. doesn't suck at football. For years that was a lose-lose game for us. Basketball hasn't really felt that way. Their fans are insufferable, albeit extremely loyal, when they win. When Iowa wins, Iowa fans usually don't say much (or at least I don't). When Iowa loses, we hear about it all year.

2A- Minnesota. Border rival and we poach a few recruits out of the Twin Cities. As already noted, their fans have this weird obsession with Iowa as if they are trying to manufacture more of a rivalry. They chant "who hates Iowa... we hate Iowa." At games where we aren't even playing them. That stuff doesn't happen at all in reverse. I really don't care about wrestling too much but both programs are always top 5ish in the nation.

2B- Wisconsin. Another border rival but this one is more of a true rivalry. Both programs are usually pretty good (ranked in basketball and football) but admittedly, they have had way more success in both sports the last 10 years. I don't think their fan base is as annoying as many others will say but they are ridiculously obnoxious drunks (which they probably say about us). Both programs compete to take kids out of Minnesota and the Chicagoland area. Wisconsin has made it a priority to keep their top talent at home with only one major univetsity for football and have done so for the most part. We have been doing a better job of getting in there for some guys like our last QB Nate Stanley (Vikings practice squad) and former starting RB Toren Young. It's the rivalry game that I, as a fan, want to win the most because they are the best.

3- The dorks to the West: Nebraska. Many fans are so delusional and every year they are going to be right back in the mix. They want to downplay all of Iowa's accomplishments while failing to recognize that they have done nothing for years. They can't even make a bowl game without a special invite for being 5-7! The automatic rebuttal is their former coach sucked..., once this coach gets his recruits..., we won a National Title 20 years ago and you have won nothing... Iowa fans in the West have to deal with that all the time. The majority of our states population is in central and eastern Iowa so the rural areas may identify more with Nebraska. They are, by far, the most annoying fan base. That's something all three of the rivals listed above would probably agree on.

Which begs the question: Are Iowans their own biggest rival? I say yes.

Read our gameday threads, you are correct.
