I don't know if it is this way in the ACC but I feel like everybody in the pre alignment Big Ten are our rivals to some extent. I assume Michigan or Ohio State don't feel that way because they have generally owned the league up until the 1980s, and OSU still does. Iowa State will always be the 9th or 10th most important game on the schedule. Winning the Big Ten games are the most important to me.

Again, it varies. There are times when we REALLY want to beat Purdue. Or Michigan State. Or Illinois. Northwestern is a new rival I am sick and tired of losing to. I know how much they hate us, which makes me want Iowa to beat them even more.

I’m w/ Runk on this...we’ve been “guest” on your board for a year+ and you guys don’t chatter about Wisky much.
Wisconsin has been backing it up for a decade and has more or less owned us during that period. They are walking the walk and they don’t really talk that much. Hard to hate on them, but it means a lot when we beat them. Nebraska talks a LOT, and haven’t walked in a meaningful way in a long time. Kind of like the black night in the holy grail, but not played by john Cleese so it’s not funny.

Purdue is our most hated rival....or so I remember hearing from the big ten powers that be

I don’t think Iowa really has one true rival. Minnesota and Wisconsin have a bigger rivalry with each other than either has with Iowa. Iowa State is in a different conference and is historically one of the worst P5 programs in the country. Iowa-Nebraska doesn’t have the history/longevity of the other rivalries, considering they just joined the Big Ten.

Truthfully, Iowa has a bunch of B+/A- rivalries, but no true rival like Ohio State/Michigan, Alabama/Auburn, or even Wisconsin/Minnesota.

“The usual numbers were cited, with the drop in D-1 programs from 146 in 1981 to 89 in 2007 to 75 now”

Menace,

If so many Iowa fans are passionate about the “sport” of wrestling, why are only a few posters taking issue with my comments and assisting you with your defense?

This very thread illustrates that there is a high level of indifference to wrestling.
Actually, you’re getting crushed in this thread. Those programs are mainly victims of Title IX and in places like the lower coasts and the South. It’s very much alive and well in the Midwest and Northeast.

Im sad for you. That hate will keep you warm all winter long waiting for the next matchup. Even my kids know blue and orange and orange and green never go together.

I wasn't watching one day at the grocery store. They were next to me doing something, turns out the were moving all the tic tac containers so that the green and orange ones had a buffer color on the shelf.

You are correct sir.

@runkpanole , good post, this is eye opening! This makes me question if Iowa fans even know what a rival is!
We have plenty of room in our black hearts for hate.

We hate our neighbors (Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois) and our little brother (Iowa State.) And they hate us. We will gladly hate yoI, too, should we get a chance to play.

LOL. “Crushed”? Ok Baghdad Bob.

75 programs left.

It’s not a mainstream “sport”.

Yeah, but you’re a Nebraskan. Part of you is broken.

Fair.

And for the OP, I always hated Wisky, Minny, and ISU equally being a Hawkeye from Nebraska. Since they joined the B1G in 2011, it’s been a no-brainer.

Bottom line, Iowa fans don’t get along well with their next door neighbors. Don’t get me started about Mizzou who’s canceled 5 of the last 6 scheduled meetings with Iowa in football.

Wrestling averaged more fans at Carver than BB did last year. Last year’s average home attendance for Iowa’s men’s basketball and wrestling.

BB - 12,357
Wrestling - 12568

This is all very confusing.

You people can't even agree on who your biggest rival is!

No wonder this board is such a shi!tshow.
I’m watching the ESPN’s The American Game: Greatest Rivalries. I say this because the great irony is that Iowa-Iowa State is featured as one of College Football’s greatest rivalries, and they split FSU’s time between Miami and Florida. So can you guys decide?

Northwestern gets my vote. The joke of it is that nobody gets worked up about them before the game, or even during the game. The whole buildup and encounter are extremely low energy lethargic affairs. But then bam, Iowa shows up as the loser on the scoreboard. It's because nobody has woken up to them being a very significant rival -- they aren't even listed on this poll! NW is the middleschooler who bullies the shit out of (some) high-school kids.

It's like losing to Steve Urkel in basketball. You don't realize that he's got legit game until it's too late.

From a person who was born in Iowa but has grown up his whole life in Indiana (raised to watch the Hawks by my mother.) I have to say it's Nebraska.

My experience with Nebraska fans is that they live in the past worse than Notre Dame fans (And I live in South Bend!!!!) They think so highly of themselves simply because they were good 30 years ago.

I'm happy as hell to beat Iowa State, Minnessota and I'm thrilled if we can beat Wisconsin (Mostly because they are tough team), but few things in sports make me happier than beating Nebraska.

Interesting. The school from Hogtown doesn’t count towards a conference championship, but I imagine most Noles hate those slimy bastards more than Miami.
I despise them equally. Younger fans may not have felt the pain scUM caused us. And everyone is surrounded by the slimy sh#t talking lizards.

FMFFM!

I chose Iowa State because JHF always said his first goal and the key to future success was to lockdown the in-state talent. That being said, they're not a conference opponent and a win or loss to them in any sport doesn't have quite the negative effect as a loss to a conference rival.

Wisconsin is our most competitive rival in FB certainly, but I'll say Minnesota is our most hated rival. Nebraska isn't our rival anymore until they get their competition up to an acceptable level, and I hope that never happens.

It’s a very specific crowd and relatively speaking a very small segment of the population.

As stated in the past, 95% of Iowa fans don’t give two shits about the outcome of a wrestling match.

95 percent of Iowa fans? No way. In any other state that might be true, but not in Iowa. Saying Iowa fans don't care about wrestling is like saying UConn fans don't care about women's college bball.

Yet you still come here often.

It's not a problem unique to Iowa fans.

95% of college football teams have multiple rivals and different segments of each base consider one rivalry game more meaningful than another. Even Bama fans can't agree who is the bigger rival - Auburn or Tennessee.

It's Wisconsin and anyone who says otherwise is an idiot.

Also, who the hell says Minnesota? Seriously? Maybe if you are over 70 years old and you can actually recall the last time Minnesota was consistently good. I don't even think they have a true fanbase. And to me, the rivalry is about the fans.

Wisconsin and Iowa are VERY similar programs with very similar fanbases. We are just a bit smarter than them!

@torbee knows what I'm talking about.

Way back when I was young, Illinois was the rival. I am from eastern Iowa tbh. Deon Thomas scandal, Jeff George and Tony Eason

Unquestionably for me, there is NO conference team I would prefer to beat every year in every game than UMinnesota Gophers. I was brought up to understand the UMinnesota is Iowa's #1 rival.....

It is all about Floyd.

The thing that is funny about Iowa-Iowa State is that many of the fans hate each other so much that they refuse to concede that they are rivals because its almost the ultimate form of insult to say that they aren't even rivals. But its the hatred that is driving the denial, which in a way just affirms that the rivalry is real and fairly intense. I can respect the opinion of anyone who may argue that there are bigger rivals for Iowa than Iowa State, and vice versa. But as soon as someone denies completely that a rivalry even exists, I see it pretty much as an admission that in their mind it is the most important rivalry of all.

Wisconsin slight edge over Minny because they jump started all their success with ex - Iowa coaches. Bernie Wyatt, Dan McCarney and Barry the Alverez. I'm not much for rasslin either but I think both Wisky and Minny rasslin programs were rebuilt with Iowa coaches. Gary Close and Dean Oliver on the BB staff as well. Bert Bielema ex Iowa as well...

That being said, I've only missed a couple of games in Minneapolis and I hate them all while I'm there...
