Empty stands

The crowd sounded great, announcers commented on it and emmert gave them credit for helping us to VICTORY and people still gonna bitch. C'mon.

Kind of uncanny how it snows every home game but hats off to the fans who keep showing up, even late on a weeknight. Hopefully weather won't be factor for next 2 which should be rockin

The ratio of bad weather nights to Iowa home basketball games has to be the highest in the nation. It's unbelievable. You add that to the fact that athletics just don't draw like they used to, and you end up with a stadium that looks a little empty. Now realize that Carver is way to big to begin with, and those seats are even more apparent.

Great crowds have been at the last few games whether it was 8K in the seats or 12K. Great job Hawk fans.

That crap is getting old. It hasn’t snowed all year (except Halloween) until Iowa has a home stand. Then it picks both days to come down.

Credit to those who made it and were loud. Credit to the Hawks for keeping them interested.

That’s kind of what I was thinking too. IC metro (including CR) is at best compared to Champaign Urbana and maybe a little bigger than Purdue. Everyone else I believe is a larger metro besides State College, which doesn’t draw either.

Iowa City/Coralville - Population aprox. 97,000 (Johnson County 150,000)

Champaign/Urbana - Population aprox. 130,000 (Champaign County 210,000)

State College - Population aprox. 105,000 (aprox 250,000 in surrounding burrows)

Purdue / Lafayette - population aprox. 120,000 (county aprox. 180,000)

The bad weather just hurts because of how much Iowa pulls in from DSM, QCA, DBQ, and Clinton Co (Clinton/Dewitt).

Just guessing here, but I’d say half the crowds come from CR and Johnson Co. A quarter (or slightly larger) is from DSM and the rest is from the QCA, Dubuque, and other smaller parts of Eastern Iowa.

I know in past DM was a huge part of the season ticket base. The end of 7pm tip off on weeknights has really cut into that market.

I'm going to have to grow my fingernails back out, but I sure am glad I made the trip!

Let’s cut to the chase....those that complain about the turnout and are within an hour drive of CHA are just truly SNOWFLAKES. The weather was nowhere near as bad as last Friday’s game. The wife and I are both 72 this year. No issues get to and from Carver...if you have a plan.

So do I.

So did the guy next to me who drove from the Quad Cities.

Stop whining and just show up!

How were the roads getting home? I really wanted to make this one, but decided late Wed afternoon just to watch at home. I’ve found a new spot in the living room where the Hawks have been playing pretty well. Didn’t need to change that.

I give kudos to the fans in attendance. Living in Des Moines, a 3-hour round trip on a week night - in the middle of Winter - is simply never going to happen ...

Not bad, but I do live just north of Iowa City. I dropped my friend off in Coralville/Rover Landing (he lives there) and the roads were snow-covered and slippery, but nothing that with careful driving couldn't be handled.

Sorry I misread your post. Thought you drove from the QCA. Usually 80 is pretty decent, but still not worth the risk.

Last year after the IU game we waited in the parking lot for about 45 minutes as the snow came down. Then drove back to the QCA and the plows had not been out yet. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t ideal either. 45-50 mph the entire drive compared to the usual 75-80. By the time we got to Davenport the roads had several inches of untouched snow. Luckily traffic was near non existent so the drive was a little easier.

I’ll never blame anyone for choosing not to go while it’s snowing. A basketball game certainly isn’t worth traveling in bad weather.

I live 40 minutes closer than you and I wouldn't do it for an 8pm game. 6pm game might be doable. But with the weather the last two games, I wouldn't be there even if I had tickets.

BTW, 3 hour round trip from DSM? You doing 95mph on I-80?;) I live between Newton and Marshalltown and it's close to a 3 hour round trip, even doing 80mph on I-80.

just stupid to blame fans for crappy scheduling.
Crappy scheduling? You do realize basketball is mostly played during the winter, don’t you? And it does tend to snow in Iowa in the winter.

If you are referring to the start time....I somewhat agree. But all Iowa’s home games are not 8 pm on a weekday, and other teams play at those times, too.

I am pretty sure when it was built that they had designed it so the roof could be raised or something so they could get up to 17000 seats in there. That should give you a pretty good idea of the fan support back then.

Just wish back in the day when they built Carver, they would have considered a site that would have included ample parking and access to mass transportation.
Cambus (free) has shuttles to Carver. The Dental lot has a lot of room. Unfortunately the University made this permit only. Stupid move. It used to be open to the public. Get rid of permit parking entirely. Sell a season pass if you must, but get that lot open to the public again.
