The Democrat's biggest problem is their propensity for identity politics. They can't shake it because it's who they are.
Except that's not what occurred. Look in the mirror.
- Harris didn't run on trying to break the female glass ceiling
- She didn't run on her black or Indian heritage
- She tried - unsuccessfully - to attract moderate Republicans, heck she even campaigned with a Cheney
- She tried - unsuccessfully - to bring back blue collar workers with populist economic messages, not identity stuff.
Then there's Trump:
- Trump brings up whether Harris is actually black at all - when did she become black?
- Trump's whole movement has been fueled by white resentment. Legitimating their sense of victimization and grievances. Countless examples of course: “There is a definite anti-white feeling in this country, and that can’t be allowed”. So many in the aftermath of George Floyd and BLM.
- Consistent fear mongering of non-white immigrants - they eat pets!!! They're slitting the throats of housewives and raping young women!
- Made a insignificant and low in numbers group - trans people - a focus of the campaign. As identity politics as it comes.
- Who is always hyper focused about wokeness and DEI?
- Childless cat ladies
And on and on. A more "normal" Republican - hard to imagine one winning a nomination - who was less focused on identity politics and more focused on hanging inflation and border dysfunction on Harris would likely have ran the score up even more.
