Espn and NY Times headline about Big 10-SEC in talks for scheduling each other. Any info on this

I mean, ok I guess. But it's not like we haven't been down this road before. I guess I'll have an opinion on this if something actually happens.

I dont subscibe so I didnt read it. I would like to play some of their teams and get out of the yearly ISU game.

Everyone at Iowa wants to dump the isu game.
Last I remember the regents voted for it to continue it years ago and that it’s mandated. Unless both universities put up a protest I don’t think there’s much that can be done to change it. Iowa St fans want to continue it more than Iowa fans.

If the ISU - Iowa game is mandated by the State then why do the schools have to keep renewing the contract which is in the news every few years. I think the State Govt mandated it back in 1979 and for awhile but not sure that it is mandated in this day and age of getting huge contracts to play someone else.

I think they threatened to before the series started back up in ‘77, but it is not mandated.

They can posture, but they can’t force them to play. It’s not like it would really be Iowa’s choice anyway.

I have stated they should do this before. Will consume all of the oxygen and money from outside conferences. The big get bigger.

Why on earth would any college football fan want this to happen? This only benefits TV networks and conference executives.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Create a much bigger gap between them and the lesser conferences.

Do you like more money or less money? Draw in even more eye balls.

If they did it this year, I don't think it'd be pretty if we're looking at the top 30 teams. Ohio State has SEC type WR, but outside of that, the SEC has 3-4 other teams with better WR and QB play.

Ohio State vs. Alabama? I'd lean Alabama
Texas vs. Oregon? I'd lean even more Texas
Tennessee vs. Penn State? Tennessee by 2 touchdowns
Georgia vs. Michigan? Not even close. Georgia easily
Missouri vs. USC? Probably a pick em.
Ole Miss vs. Indiana? Heavy lean Ole Miss
LSU vs. Illinois? LSU by 14+
Oklahoma vs. Nebraska? Slight lean Oklahoma
Texas A&M vs. Iowa? Slight lean Iowa

I think it's much more likely with the super conferences. The real question is if the SEC will go to nine conference games. Iowa almost certainly has to drop Iowa State if this happens.
Which is ironic because it looks like Iowa State is going to be consistently relevant now and that game will actually do what Iowa wanted it to do for decades rather than just be a really bad loss if they dropped that game.

Think it is a good chance that you see those two leagues break away from NCAA control in FB sooner rather than later.
That would be interesting if it’s a total breakaway. 9 conference games and 3 games against SEC teams.

Coaches would be getting fired constantly when they can feed on the garbage schools to inflate their worth.

You think KF would hang it up then?

No way Iowa signs off on this especially with KF hanging around another decade. Adding a loss to a SEC team and dropping Albany , with all these new Big 10 losses coming, simply is not happening.

What about Nebraska though???? I heard since they lost to Bert at home on a Friday night they have said they never again want a Friday night game at home.

For now until the two break away from the NCAA.

Mandated to have a contract

I agree with your statement.
Maybe someone here could give more information on it or supply a link to that information.

Based on what's coming, Iowa will have a decision to make. Either get rid of the Iowa State game, so you can keep 7 home games annually, or deal with playing 6 home games every other year with a tougher schedule.

My guess is the in-state/internal pressure to keep the biggest money maker game on their schedule bi-annually will win out and Iowa will end up playing a two-year schedule like this:

New Mexico State
At Iowa State
Missouri
Northwestern
At UCLA
At Rutgers
Penn State
Minnesota
At Wisconsin
Illinois
Michigan
At Nebraska

Eastern Illinois
Iowa State
At Auburn
At Washington
Michigan State
At USC
At Indiana
Purdue
At Ohio State
Wisconsin
At Minnesota
Nebraska

Please cite the legislative Iowa Code that mandates them playing. I'll wait but you won't find it.

This, and just what are they going to do if Iowa says "were done"......

I think we can rule out Iowa playing six home games every other year to keep playing ISU every year.

I’m sure there are several scenarios. That is not one of them.

I wonder if the ACC and Big 12 won't come to a similar agreement to counter / add to their own coffers.
Hence, it won't just be Iowa removing itself from this game.

That’s a good point that I hadn’t considered but I bet you are right, it probably will happen eventually (assuming the ACC doesn’t end up like the Pac12…)

I am not quite sure why you are referring to the Iowa State game as the state's biggest money maker, do you think Iowa/Bama would be any less? Not to mention bigger TV audiences. It is a wash, replace Iowa St with an SEC team and we will still play two cupcakes. There is nothing to be gained from playing Iowa State. I am all in, I hope it happens. I would much rather see Mizzou than Moo U.

It has been disproven that legislation mandated the Iowa / ISU game back then, and it’s unlikely that state legislatures would control Iowa’s football schedule going forward. An arbitrator ruled in favor of Iowa State back in 1971 which continued the series after a contract dispute between the two.

It has been suggested that if any such legislation existed forcing Iowa to play ISU, the B1G could suspend Iowa for lack of faculty control. If true, I know legislators are pretty dumb. Hopefully they’re not that stupid.

Honestly, the reason to mandate this game, to ensure a nice payday for Iowa State when they hosted it, isn't necessary anymore. They aren't having the attendance issues they used to have and should be able to be self sustaining at this point. Maybe that will change in the future but as the saying goes, cross that bridge when you get to it.

Actually, that's the only scenario unless the Big Ten adds a conference game.

In years where we play in Iowa City, we only get 4 conf. home games. 2 OOC games + ISU means 7 home games. In years we play AT Ames, we have 5 conf. home games + 2 OOC home games for a grand total of........7.

Add an SEC team into the mix. That's a guaranteed alternate home one year and on the road the next.

Regardless of how you spin it, we'll end up with 7 one year, 6 in another.

Even if we flipped the 5/4 model it would still come out the same, unless they changed when we're on the road and when we're hosting an SEC team......then it could be 5 and 8! :D

Iowa is not getting rid of the ISU game, so that's how it'll have to be.

The annual money difference will eventually create a much wider gap. Maybe then they will end it.
