Iowa has now swept both Michigan State and Purdue -- and is 16-3 overall. As of today, Fran McCaffery is the frontrunner for National Coach of the Year - and Jarrod Uthoff has to be in the discussion for National Player of the Year. Hawkeyes have also gotten good production from role guys Dom Uhl and Nicholas Baer.

First KF and then, maybe, Fran? Has any school ever pulled that off?

Uthoff is having an excellent year but barring injury to Buddy Hield of Oklahoma, Uthoff will never beat out Hield for national player of the year.

I tend to agree. I think Uthoff getting B1G player of the year and 1st team AA would still be quite the accomplishment. Just feels like it's Hield's to lose at this point.

I realize that these days contracts are pretty meaningless, but I hope our AD is drawing up plans to keep McCaffery here and happy.
He has to stay, whose going to pay for his kids to walk-on at Iowa if he leaves.......................................? ;)

On another sarcastic note, do we really want Fran to be National Coach of the Year? Last time we had one of those guys we had the worst record in the history of Iowa Basketball and unsurpassed medicority, I'd rather not awaken the ghosts........................:D

Fran has done a GREAT job no, doubt, but honestly SHOULD he be coach of the year?

Only reason I say that, is because we WERE suppose to be really good this year, and we ARE a senior laden, experienced team.

It's not as if this team came completely out of nowhere.

Just playing devils advocate a bit I guess. Not sure who else coaching wise has impressed this year. I tend to look for who has done the best with the least.

Iowa is 7-0 in the Big Ten for the first time since 1969-70.

Six of the Hawkeyes’ league wins have been by double-digits, including two vs. Michigan State and one vs. Purdue.

With the win vs. Purdue, the Hawkeyes improved to 7-3 against teams ranked in the top 50 of the RPI.

And Iowa has won 13 straight at home.

The Hawkeyes No. 9 ranking is the highest since Fran McCaffery took over in 2010, and the higheset since a No. 7 in November 2001.

It also marks the first time Iowa has had its football and basketball teams ranked in the top 10 in the same season.

True. But basically because of Hield's 40pt KU game. JU needs to have a signature game like that to beat him out. How about @MD?
His should've been ISU, if he doesn't get shut down in the 2nd half I think he does a Lafester number to the Clones, but that's what I think would've happened.

I think Uthoff would beat out Hield if IA wins the B1G and Hield can't lead OK to a Big 12 champ or co-champ.

Hold up. Is this sarcasm that I am just missing? We were picked to finish 9th in a 14 team Big Ten. I'm not sure how that translates to we were supposed to be really good this year. Senior laden? Absolutely. But the people who are paid to know this stuff didn't think we were going to even be top half of the B1G. Barring a second half of the B1G season meltdown I can't see any way Fran doesn't win it.

And remember when Uthoff wasn't one of the top 101 players this year?

Yep. The loss of Aaron White and 6th man of the year Gabe Olaseni, and JO was supposed to leave this team short on depth (primarily in the frontcourt), and no clear star. We knew Uthoff had the potential to be the go-to guy, but I don't think anybody expected what we've seen from him this year. There were questions about whether Jok would step up to be the second scorer, how Uhl would progress, if Woodbury would be able to handle extensive minutes, etc etc. Lots of questions...

Fran has most certainly deserved the honor thus far.

I think WVU, and Texas A and M coach are the only 2 with a stake for coach of the year, but it's Fran's to lose. Uthoff and Hield seem to be the front runners, with Dunn as an outside shot. Think Valentines out because of injury, and losses to Uthoff. I just think Hield means more to Oklahoma than Uthoff does to Iowa, so Hield will probably win.

One problem is who doesn't like a guy named Buddy? That means a lot more than people realize. And that says a lot about how these popularity contests work.

It's great that Uthoff is looking at a for sure First Team All Big Ten (that was not universally expected by we fans at the start of this year) maybe, maybe even likely, Big Ten Player of the Year and an All American! And it's great there is talk of McCaffery as COY.

But the real thrill I think for all these guys will be the team honors. Win everything thing they can and divide it up equally like plunderers of old!

Kris Dunn should get serious consideration. PG averaging 17 ppg, 6 rebs, 6.7 assists.

Brice Johnson could factor in the conversation as well. He's had some monster games.

Hield is putting up ridiculous numbers...

25.7 pts per game. 52% 3 pt FG

Unless the wheels fall off....it's Hields to lose

Does Hield average 3blocks/game as well?
Unfortunately, gaudy scoring is going to trump blocked shots. I think Uthoff's only chance will be more dependent upon the am metrics. If we win the Big with only a couple of loses or less and if Oklahoma faulters down the stretch.

1986 Football team made the top 10 for a couple weeks and the 86-87 basketball team was ranked as high as #1.
