ESPN Has Fran on the Hot Seat

Paywall! What was said in article?
The Fran pertinent stuff is listed under "Jobs That Could Open Up"

"Fran McCaffery is nearing the end of his 15th season at Iowa, with the Hawkeyes likely to miss the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. He has been to seven NCAA tournaments during his time in Iowa City, including four straight from 2019 and 2023, but failed to get past the first weekend each time. Sources have pushed back against the idea of a retirement, although it would cost around $4 million for the school to move on from him. West Virginia's Darian DeVries and Drake's Ben McCollum would be obvious candidates."

Other coaches in this section: Bobby Hurley, Mike White at Georgia, Ben Johnson, Porter Moser, Rodney Terry, Johnny Dawkins at UCF, Kyle Neptune at Nova. They had Hubert Davis here too but was redacted due to his extension.

Starting to think we are stuck for one more year.

Per @Hawksfor3 , it says that "Fran is Iowa's all time winningest coach and deserves not only a raise and extension, but a much more larger buyout than he currently is at. Often times this is referred to as an RELB (raise, extension, larger buyout)."

Reason #879 that Gary Barta was the worst AD in Iowa history.

Sources say he won’t retire. Would Beth actually fire him? She needs to.
"Sources". lulz

Plain basic common sense will tell you that a person is not walking away from what would be $4M owed, nobody would.

If Iowa can't get $1.4M a year, for 3 years, from donors to make a change when it is desperately needed, then the problems run much deeper than being saddled with a coach who can't produce results worthy of retaining his position.

Increase ticket sales would likely cover the buyout and many coaches work out a deal to retire other than being fired. Happens all the time.

Except Indiana's head coach...

So of course Gary "The Human Lapel Pin" Barta extended him every chance he got. Lol. There's no better face of mediocrity in the world than Gary Barta.
Not true His bite is elite, just ask any apple or can of tuna He runs up against , That alone gets His face to at least above average if graded on a really warped scale . He once won the Mr Ed award, give Him His flowers .

Interesting that the three media members of this Hawkeye Beacon site are petrified to ask Fran why he deserves to return as Iowa’s head coach next season.

Sadly they’re not alone among the Iowa media (Mike Hlas a prime example).

Guess denial of the situation is one way to deal with covering the Iowa men’s basketball team.

Same thing with Kirk. They are afraid to even broach the topic. Or ask Fran something like, “Why are you starting your son over an NBA lottery pick?”

They’re afraid of this Fran making an appearance….

I was court side for that. I thought Fran was coming after me initially. Csb
You got your monies worth! Fran was epic back then for his FranCon meltdowns due to Terry Weimer and how bad he was at officiating both ends with similar calls. One end was tackle football and no calls, the other end was touch the player and it’s a foul. Unfortunately, Iowa was on the end of that stick numerous times with Weimer.

So if Beth does not let him go at the end of the season, she (and whoever else is behind this) does not really care about filling seats next year. Shrug your shoulders and say "it is what it is". If $4 million is the number but instead of paying, the University is willing to hang on to a lame duck coach with 6000 tickets (or less) sold and another year of incoming students that have no interest in attending...pretty sad state of affairs. Not many power conference schools would sit back and wait another year....but Iowa???
We will see how it goes.....I am ALL for paying him off and moving on.

If Beth brings back Fran for another year, I am OUT (meaning I'm done watching) until Fran is gone. I've reached the point this season where my main motivation for watching the games is out of morbid curiosity. Bringing back Fran despite it all, indicates to me pretty much what you just said. If the university doesn't care, then why should I?

But we'll see what happens. I'm hoping Beth sees exactly where things are and does what needs to be done.

My “sources” say … ‘no shit he won’t retire and leave money on the table…’

He will be fired at the end of the year … so … adios to this .510 conference record / Zero Sweet 16 coach …
