ESPN NBA Draft Analyst: Payton has a Ready-Made Skill for the NBA

His shooting is NBA ready. The development of his fade away/mid range shots has been nice. Needs to guard better and gains some muscles. . Duncan Robinson has made it as a 3pt shooting specialist---if Sandfort can guard as well as Duncan, there should be a place for Payton.

Robinson is 6'9".
Payton is a good shooter but the NBA has insane talent.
It is truly difficult to make the league. Look at Luka..he is probably as good a shooter as Sandy and he cannot get a spot.
Real problem is Sandy's inability to stay in front of his man on defense...like Luka.

yeah, I think being asked to play defense will hold Payton back; we'll see

I hope that article isn't behind a paywall.

For him to have a snowballs chance in hell to play in the NBA he has to be damn near close to these previous two games for the rest of his four year career, and that's a stretch.

His thoughts:

Payton Sandfort, 6-7, Wing, Junior, Iowa – He’s become a trendy specialist pick in recent weeks, with his wing size and shooting splits (46/39/89) complemented by a high basketball IQ, willingness to mix it up on the glass, and be a reliable decision-maker and ball-mover around the perimeter. Given the gains he’s made in each of the last three years though, it would be no surprise to see the Iowa native return next year as a senior and be the team’s offensive focal point.

I don’t necessarily see PS an NBA player. But this article does expose the dumb, often shitty crap that “coaches” on this board continue to take because their pissed…

It’s childlike…

Robinson is not 6’9”. Listed at 6’7”. But I don’t see PS making the league either.

I think he needs another year but what do I know. Besides, many of those players go to the G league now where they can get similar experience and development and get paid to do it. Plus, there's a decent chance they will get to spend at least some time up in the NBA.

I hope he sticks around for another year though. With his brother there too I feel like his odds of staying are higher than they are of him leaving. With Own no longer getting the freshmen officiating they could be pretty good next year. They certainly will likely be a tournament team. I'm not sure if getting out of the first weekend is an option but they will be better than this year. Losing Perkins will hurt though.

Like 15-20 new guys make the NBA each year. Only Keegan Murray has really made it.

No White,.Uthoff, Marble, Garza....

So the NBA is such a different game from the college game. Guy can clearly shoot it and almost from anywhere and his release is crazy fast. As bad as he is on defense he needs to be unbelievably good on the other end. Most late 2nd round picks end up in the G league. But who knows.

Someone explain to me why PS could be an NBA prospect while Joe Wieskamp has bounced around the world, the G League, and the NBA? Wouldn't JW be a comp to PS (and not because they play/ed for Iowa)?

Sandfort has a much quicker release and like the Robinson comparison, is always looking to come off screens for a quick hitter. Wieskamp has played 38 career games in the Association, so a good question may be if Sandfort ends up playing more than 38 games.

Good point. Peyton probably a better shooter from distance but Joe is better at everything else.

The Athletic's latest mock draft had Sandfort in the late 2nd round too. I would assume he would at least put his name in for evaluation.

Sandfort, Perkins, Owen, Dix. That is a strong core for next year. Need some others to come along/transfers to fit in.

You would think that Sandford's defensive liabilities would keep him out of this discussion but I guess there's always room for a 3 point shooter with great range. Plus, it's the modern NBA. Do they even play defense anymore? Certainly not in All-Star games.

6’7 with a lightning quick release while leading the B1G in threes made will get you looks from the Association.

Uthoff always puzzled me. Thought his game would play in the NBA over all of the others listed.

Very skilled college PF and he could block shots---he was a favorite of all time for me as a fan. Maybe just too weak to play PF and not quick enough to play the 3 like a Keegan Murray. JoeW not making it so far doesn't surprise me----he couldn't go left and he never really focused on defense...maybe he can improve in those areas and make it...shame he left early for Iowa fans but he did what was best for his own career, so no hard feelings.

Iowa needs to come up with better NIL to keep these guys around. Perkins, Sandfort, Freeman and even Dix are all quality players.

I think you are right on the strength/quickness issue with Uthoff. Weiskamp didn't have that quick of a release either. But that's the only thing Sandfort has on him. Both of those guys are among my favorites from the Fran era.

NBA is such a different game from even 5 years ago. Saw a thing that said the Warriors championship team from a few years ago would be 19th in efficiency in today's game. You're drafted because you're either a super athletic wing, a euro that's skilled or in Sandfort's case a guy that can spread the floor and shoot it. Would he get abused on defense? Clearly. He can't stay in front of anyone in college. However in the NBA when 5 guys including your Center, guys like Jokic, or even a guard like Doncic who is impossible to stop 1 on 1, if Peyton can go drill 40% of 3 pointers in 8-10 minutes a game he could ( not saying he will, but could) be a valuable piece off somebody's bench. He'll start off in the G League but who knows?

The most puzzling thing to me isn’t his draft prospectus, though like many of you I’d have guessed he has to many liabilities.

But it’s upsetting, sad really, that there are so many in here that are quick to pile shit on someone when their favorite team loses.

There are people in this very thread that have suggested he isn’t even a P5 player. There are just so many shitty, unhappy people on these message boards with no repercussions for their own actions

Do you want to have those people hung on Times Square?

Oohhh seems strong….what an I missing? Has to be a backstory there🤔
Just saying you’re asking for repercussions. It’s a message board. People have opinions. Dumb ones, smart ones, etc. want them banished for being wrong or mean? Unfortunately it’s life. 👍

Oh yes I’d been fine with them being banished… here’s the thing, i get your premise, and you’re a solid dude, no matter what you might think of me. Smart, mostly fair & reasonable. And I’ve actually enjoyed bantering with you in the last few months. Hopefully you have as well…

With that long-winded, pandering aside… You’ve surely heard me say, and maybe you don’t believe it, but I’m pretty easy to get along with, I’m mostly pretty loving and uplifting, but part of that is because I’m careful about who I hang out with…

If you were a notorious complainer and constantly whining and bitching like the people, I see on this message board… I would most assuredly banish you by never hanging out with you again.

Unfortunately, I don’t have that option on a message board….🤷‍♂️

Yes it’s life, yes I have known literally 100s of those kind of people. Enough to know I don’t care to associate with them. Criticism is fine, even needed, that’s not what happens in here….

I have been and still am critical of the coaches. But there’s a line and really more than that…be careful what you wish for.

These fellas are too dumb to understand the circumstances of Fran’s success has now made him replaceable to them. It just makes me chuckle is all and not interested in conversing with people with such shortsighted vision.

And by the by, I can deal with dumb. It’s dumb, that thinks they are smart I have a problem with.

I got in trouble here a while back when I mentioned that PS has a much higher and quicker release than JBO or Joe W. It was almost like i said JBo and Joe W sucked.

Payton can get his shot off in a crowd. it's so quick and high that's it's really tough to block even inside,

There are not many guarantees with you get picked in the 2nd round of the NBA Draft.

Joe Wieskamp was picked #41 overall by the Spurs in the 2021 NBA Draft. He has made some good money in his first 2 seasons. He's been bouncing around to different G-League teams ever since.

This is what he made his first 2 seasons:

..$202,068: 2021-2022 (Spurs)
$2,175,000: 2022-2023 (Spurs)
....$734,261: 2022-2023 (Raptors)
.........................................
$3,111,329: TOTAL

Clearly no guarantees. But who would have thought he would even be a projected draft pick going into the season? Certainly not me. And I’ll agree with @Hawk_4shur that he can pretty much get his shot against almost anyone. And he’s 6-7.

Of course you got in trouble. I call it the Riley McCarron effect. He shouldn’t be playing until suddenly he runs a 4.3 something 40 and makes an NFL roster. It’s suddenly another example of the coaches failures.
