I put a small refundable deposit down on a new Ford Lightning. They had over 14k in rebates and 72 months at 0%, so it was a deal I didn't think I could pass up. I currently have a 2018 Ford F150 Platinum with 38k miles so I don't drive much and don't take many long distance trips. I'm really struggling if I should make the switch. Anyone drive an EV and have any positive or negative advice? Anyone have buyer's remorse?

I’ve driven a model s Tesla since 2015…love having an EV. I’ve never had buyer’s remorse on anything EV related whatsoever. But I must admit Tesla has a huge lead on technology, etc and I don’t have experience with Ford relative to EVs. For rare really long road trips you can always rent a car or perhaps you have a second car to use on those.

Tricks seem like the natural environment for EV. Just made the bed a few inches shallower and have a giant battery under there.

I guess that logic has flaws.

A ford dealer told me the range on the EV truck is less than advertised and towing or cold makes it a lot worse. But I am still intrigued by them and wouldn’t say no. I think the key is having a good charger at home and a good network of charging stations.

I have heard the cold cuts the range down significantly. On a positive note, they friggin sail! The acceleration is incredible. Exactly what @Hawkman98 would want!😉—-this info from a colleague who has one…

Aren't these units priced at $110,000?

You can't be f*cking serious. $110k for a pick up truck. I'd be driving a new Audi A8 for that.
You can get one for $72,585 sticker and a ford dealer in Omaha has a Lightning listed for $65800 after discounts.

I would rather pay that then dump over $80k for one of those piece of shit grand wagoneers from Jeep. Jeep is tje worst brand for problems.

My neighbor bought a 2024 Lightning about three months ago. Loves it so far. I rode in it once with him, and it does accelerate. Smooth ride. He loves it so far. Installed the home charger in garage. He’s a Dr. and works probably 15 miles away, doesn’t need it to tow anything, so a good choice for him.

I bought a 2024 F150 Hybrid Lariat in June. If I had to do it over again, I may have purchased the lightning as well, as I take few long trips in my truck and rarely tow anything. However, I do love the Powerboost hybrid engine so far. Prior to this truck, I had Ford Platinum I purchased new in 2013, and put 192K miles on it with zero issues.

My neighbor and I both have the anti-matter blue exterior color and I’ve got the black-out package. Great color.

I must be lucky, I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee L I bought new in 2024. One of best vehicles I've ever owned. The grandkids love the TV's in the back and I've had no problems in the first 30k miles. Buddy of mine has a Wagoneer we take that on our summer golf trips, thing rides like a luxury car. It's so nice.

2024?

Give it time. The gremlins start to show up after the warranty expires.

Are you towing/hauling anything?

This is true and varies from manufacturer to manufacturer just how bad towing + cold affect range. Some are worse than others.

The NHTSA / Feds are going to start doing guidance for these categories for range for EVs:

1. fair weather range
2. cold weather (32 degrees?) range
3. towing range

and they should! More transparency is better so consumers can make informed decisions and have a better understanding / expectation of what they are buying.

Not all EVs are designed the same from an energy management and thermal management perspective. The technology varies and is still relatively new compared to internal combustion engines.

This is off topic but thought it was an interesting & candid take from Ford CEO Jim Farley. I respect him and hope Ford survives.

What do you want for the 2018 with 38K?

They are pure shit. We have 4 of them at work for the route supervisors. We had to get rid of them after 8 months. Constantly broken down and the drivers hated that they were stopping during the day to charge.

I have a good network of charging stations. They're called GAS stations.

200 to 250 miles
If you have people regularly driving 250 miles per day in a cold weather environment then I wouldn’t blame the trucks you bought. I would blame the dumbass who thought EVs were a good idea in that driving scenario.

If your supervisors were driving say 100-150 miles per day this would be a non issue provided you have charging where the trucks are stored overnight. Like anything EVs are great at some scenarios and bad at others. Range in their big weakness (unless you get the top of the line Lucid Air).

I have a coworker who loves his and he's had it over a year.

And have them install a manual transfer switch, too, so you can power the house off the truck battery during power outages.
