Looking at how it sets up for 2018 "we" have a junior and a sophomore. Do you guys think they try to bring one in with swarm19 or swarm20?

If they go '19 one would think it would be a walk on but if its '20 they might spend a 'ship. With the emphasis we put on field position, as silly as it sounds, punter is a big deal.

Punter is the biggest need for Iowa. I will say I was in the practice facility a few months back and Gersonde(spelling?) was booting well. This position sacres me and can be costly ..see 2017.

One bad year of punting and this is now the focus of so much discussion on here... hilarious. Maybe we'll bring in a JUCO with one year of eligibility that will be one of the finest punters in Hawkeye history... see 2016

Are we in for more of this?

I'm not trying to over emphasize the position, although it is valuable which is why I brought up the idea of the schollie being spent. I was thinking the discussion would be more around the time frame of being the next guy in. If they wait for the 2020 class we would have a senior(?) And a true fresh for 2021?.

I know Gersonde only punted 13 times last yr but his average was 42.5.

Makes sense. I would say the idea of a true freshmen punter isnt as scary as other positions but you would think they would want some overlap.

It's important enough to deserve a scholarship '19, '20, or both. The problem is that the pool of "scholarship quality" punters is small, and everybody wants one. Additionally, they're notorious for being inconsistent ~ kinda like our schedule each year. Underappreciated when you've got a good one; center of attention when you need one.

I would think with limited scholarships available and a smaller class that they likely won't fill a spot with a punter this year unless someone really good falls into their laps. But maybe next year

When I used to play dynasty mode on NCAA football, I always signed a new one before the current guy's SR season. I won like 20 championships in a row so it is obviously the way coaches should do it in real life.

Did you get the 'cheat codes' online? Where is Reggie Roby when you need him?

There are a couple dozen guys on campus who punted in high school who would have done as well as what Iowa ran out there last year. Heck, there are probably a dozen guys on the football team who would have punted at least that well with 10-15 minutes of practice a day.

Yes. At the time, IIRC, he averaged 49 yards a punt, and set the NCAA season record. He was drafted (as a punter) into the NFL. That never happens today.

Actually averaged 49.8, and slammed a 55-yarder that would have made him the first in NCAA history to average 50+. Nullified by, of all things, a roughing the punter penalty, IIRC.

The guy who eventually did become the first to average 50 "backed" into it by averaging so few punts, it cheapened the "accomplishment".

My first college game was Nebraska 81. When Roby hit his first 60+ bomb, the crowd made a collective oooo! He was special.

Cheat codes? Didn't need no stinking cheat codes! I was Bear Bryant, Woody Hayes, and Nick Saban all rolled up in one badass coach. I loved the recruiting. Nothing but 4 and 5* players.
