It was so nice to see the Hawkeyes come back strong and get a win against Michigan. You can see some growth from each of the players. I think there is quite a bit of room still to grow as a team both on offense and defense.

Offensively: Cook and Pemsl chemistry will get only better. Bohannon to Cook is coming. Jok to cook still more to come. Bohanon to Pemsl is already good.

Defensively: seeing some nice rotations in the zone and when a defender gets beat the helper of the helper is getting there. Just need to add rebounding when things break down to give only one shot.

Brady played some point with Jok Wagner Baer Uhl in th firs half and held their own well.
Seeing some firm foundation being laid and alot will depend on the young men desire to succeed

Thanks 2432Hawk

I tend to believe McCaffery knows what he is doing in finding players. But for those that don't it's nice that Beilein had some words to share about Bohannon.

"When you look at his numbers, his 3 pt %, his A/T ratio, he's playing as well as any freshman point guard in the country."

The state of Iowa most years turns out two or three really, really good players and Fran has to get more than his share of them. This goes back a decade or two, or more. If you look at the top (not the projects) Iowa players that Iowa has gotten over the years most of them start and are very productive. I think that of our out-of-state recruits, the sad fact is that a scary percentage don't pan out or drop/flunk out. Obviously, some are great. Just because a recruiter sees a kid have a big game in a state like Illinois or Ohio doesn't always mean that it will transfer to playing at Iowa. We take too many "projects." I think that Fran is learning that. He has to lock down the kids that he has watched grow into the sport from their early years, like Bohannon, Pemsl, Wieskamp, etc., who are good kids and decent students. And then find the "national" kid who wants to be a Hawkeye and (importantly) fits, like Cook and (I think) Garza and Nunge. Go look at the Iowa basketball "stats." Disproportionately dominated by kids from Iowa.

Sounds like just the kind of thing I'd have said about Dr. Tom and his out of state recruits. However, there wasn't rampant transferring everywhere at that time. And I think we had a few more academic casualties that had to sit a semester. Have we had even one under Fran

Our problem with Projects? You could take the Fran baby out of the bath and replace it with any Izzo baby or any other coach baby and you will still find turds in the water.

It's just the way things are.

under Fran we have not had someone ruled academically ineligible...that's now 7 year history. That doesn't happen by accident...it is more than fair to say that there are some talented recruits that are passed over because of high school academics. Doesn't mean Fran doesn't do his homework & will offer if he feels good about conditions & circumstances.. He has brought in kids who were not necessarily high school honor roll types ..obviously his review process is A+ and once the player is on campus his approach to academics is another A+.

Side note..Mike Gesell was awarded the B1G Medal of Honor at the conclusion of his senior year..for outstanding academics & performance on the court in a career. This isn't just handed out to anyone..not totally sure but I believe Iowa has only had a handful of BB players to receive this award. I know we all concentrate on performances on the floor. Gesell represented the very best of what college basketball should be.

Fun to pretend to be a coach once in a while:

Moss: Can see more growth in Moss with a nice response following Purdue. So fun to see his gears switch on. Would like to see a pull up developed on the break when it gets too crowded in the lane. Then add a drive and dish move. WoW!

Baer: just keep making shots. Great example of playing with confidence.

Ellingson: is playing his best ball right now. Really like how he knows who he is. More of the same.

Wagner: needs to develop a 10-12 ft one dribble pull up and rebound, rebound, and rebound. Then add to that.

Williams: has so much talent. You can see his handles developing nicely. Aside from his back issues, Hasn't felt comfortable out there yet. Hope it is soon. Add mid-range game-one step pull up would be a nice development.

Uhl Just need his confidence back. Has the tools. He dribbles, drives, rebounds, maybe add a one step pull instead of driving all the way and getting caught.

Kriener and Dailey to be continued.

it is fun ... Wagner, Uhl & CW have struggled offensively for the most part...so just like any other player in the rotation..play D...rebound..let the game dictate. Coach em up.

Ya Beilein is a good guy...also don't have a big problem with Painter & Chambers...not sure about the Rutgers guy.
Painter's alright, but his decision to leave Swanigan in to get the double double after the game was already in hand put a bad taste in my mouth

I understand the sentiment, but I see it more as rewarding the kid for working so hard. Remember what he looked like last year? He was good, but would just jack up 3s in low percentage situations. He is much more interior focused this year, but if he needs to get a touch, will step outside to relieve pressure. He's really blossomed, and giving the kid the opportunity to add another double double to his career probably isn't a big deal either way in the grand scheme, but I bet it put a smile on his face in the locker room.

Just telling the wife during the game that its hard to hate Michigan with Beilein as the coach. Remember him telling Aaron White to keep his chin up when Whitey was having a slump. Opposing coaches don't say nice things to the other teams players. The guy is a class act from the jump.
