Fargo 16 U

NHSCA 4th place finisher Christopher Crawford defeats Bas Diaz

152 Christopher Crawford (New York) VPO1 Bas Diaz (Iowa), 3-2

Bo Bassett took an early loss in the Rd of 32 to a kid from Kentucky named Raney. Wasn't an accident...Raney scored on the first whistle and it was a close match until Raney cradled him up for the fall. Hats off to Raney.

Edit: His brother is also in the QFs at 106.

Raney was looking great. Interested to see how his tournament goes.

So he's not the next Spencer Lee?

I watched this match this morning and I agree it was absolutely not an accident. Raney is lightning quick and immediately folded Bassett’s leg as soon as he grabbed his ankle on that first single off the opening whistle. That takedown on a single, against a very good defensive wrestler, is about as clean as it can get.

Bassett scored three times, twice off of Raney’s shots and once off of a freestyle exposure, but Bo wasn’t ever comfortable in this one. Bassett had to scramble his way out of danger for all of his scores.

Raney is gonna be an uncomfortable matchup for anyone he faces, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win this. If he wasn’t on everyone’s radar he should be now.

Has Raney wrestled much nationally to this point. Seems like there could be some more under the radar guys this year than other years

He's only going to be a freshman so maybe it was his first year of Fargo eligibility.

Morningstar definitely needs to come visit Union County, KY and then head over to Evansville Mater Dei to say hi as well.

Raney twins are something very special.

I don’t ever remember them coming this way - but would be worth growing the relationship as both programs put out great wrestlers year in and year out.

Very much on the radar…

I highly recommend wrestling fans to consider going to this Fargo tournament sometime. My son unexpectedly qualified this year, and although he got beat twice, he’ll never forget the experience. 27 mats going at once…it’s the State Wrestling tournament to the max. I like that it has the team aspect to it also. Go Team Iowa.

(edit)…He won his first 16U greco match today (Wednesday), and was pretty excited to say the least. Wonderful, week-long experience.
