*******Penn St vs Iowa Game Thread*******

I'll be honest, I didn't even really watch it. Just kept a wandering eye on it from time to time.

Had the game on, with no sound, on a small auxiliary TV while watching something else on the main one.

Only surviving by the smallest margin possible at home vs a bottom third of the conference team just adds to my apathy, truthfully.

I listened to it doing chores and working out. Still glad we won.

Kind of like watching a horror flick with your open fingers covering your face.

Fran cannot make FTs. For crying out loud can folks stop blaming him for players just not performing? A coach puts players in position to make plays. It is on the player to do it. 1-7 FTs is on the players, not the coaches. FTs in practice are fine and every team does it. Doing it in a game is on the shooters. Fran makes enough head scratching decisions in games but making FTs is not on him.

Fran recruits the guys and put out lineups that are are mismatched defensively/on boards. Being mentally tough is part of winning. Bo Ryan's teams used to win nearly every close game---he recruited guys that were strong mentally, confident, competitive on both offense and defense.

The statistical odds that Iowa would miss all three 1 and 1's is pretty low---less than 10% based on the FT percentages. Yet they did---pressure of the moment contributed---mentally weak, part of a losing is losing confidence.

In UCLA game, the odds that UCLA would make their first 9 shots was extremely low. The odds that Wisconsin and UCLA would be able to shoot north of 60% from 3pt line is pretty low. At some point these statistical oddities are a trend---the defenses/lineups Fran puts out are enabling opponents to excel.

Exactly.... We have 15 damn years of evidence.

Sorry all you haters but the players won this game tonight very gritty on both ends of the floor
This thread was all about i hope we lose so Fran is further on the hot seat I am very disappointed as these players give their all to right the ship

That was the most Mulvey we've seen since the non conference games. I'm wondering why did he put him in now?
It may have been Dembele's brick from 10 ft followed by a bone headed double dribble a few minutes later.

Mulva, in 5 minutes, had 3 rebounds (2 offensive). He was 0-1 FGs for 0 points scored.

That’s a big W
Agree. Better all around effort tonight. The only way to build on this is to string a few wins together. That's going to be tough with 3 of their next 5 on the road, and matchups with Purdue and Wisky at home, and at Maryland coming up in that stretch. Their "identity" is still an offensive oriented team ranked #4, and a well below average defensive team ranked at #321. All they rely on is trying to outscore their opponent.

Practicing free throws is definitely something coaches have control over. They suck because they are probably just scrimmaging all the time instead of addressing it.
making free throws is entirely on the players and how mentally tough they are..coaches can not control it and practice does not instill it. does a player want to be the one shooting, does he want the ball, does he hope he can make the shot or does he know he will?

What I question is whether those offers were still on the table. Again, the kid was committed to South Florida. There's something fishy about his ranking/recruitment.
Far more likely than anything being fishy is you - as usual - simply not knowing what you’re talking about. Lewis committed to a college 18 minutes from his high school to play for a young Black coach who was considered a bright young mind in the game before he died. South Florida is a huge school in an area with a lot of monied people, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they had a good amount of NIL cash to throw around too.

As for him committing to Iowa, I would guess that the Hawkeyes could offer him a good chunk of money as it surely didn’t cost them a lot to land players like Diakite and Briscoe. Teams like Michigan St, Michigan, Auburn and Marquette each already had commitments from multiple Top 150 players in the 2025 class, meaning it’s very possible they had less to offer Lewis than Iowa.

Also, given that Iowa had now landed two 4-star players in the past few weeks, I think it’s safe to say their NIL money situation has likely improved since the fall. They can also make a strong case for offering a lot of early playing time, especially at the shooting guard position.

Had to shoot 11 for 23 to beat Penn State at home by 1 ? Sad really. Sandfort our future NBA player celebrated like we were going to the Final 4.
I agree. It is sad. The 3 ball fell tonight, which helped, but on the defensive side giving up 75 points to PSU is close to being right in line with where they rank at #321 in the nation at giving up 78.5/game. After dropping the last 3, Sandfort was probably glad by the outcome tonight, stopping the skid.

Sometimes, you feel like you lost despite what is says on the scoreboard. Last night was one of those times.
Am I glad we held on to win? Yes. Do I feel better about the team going forward? No.

I thought Mulvey provided some good minutes. Enjoyed his rebounding. He was open a few times but Harding missed him or didn’t trust him. Wish he could’ve got fed the ball a few times. If he could focus on the weight room, his trajectory would change.

I think they can go on a win streak, they can.. I wouldn’t bet on it.

Defensively, I wish they would stick with either man concepts or zone concepts and go with that 90% of the time… it’s difficult enough to ensure a coach has engrained one of those defensive philosophies into their team so they perform it at a high level… trying to do play both zone and man at the highest level possible, is not realistic.. both end up being half ass.

I think it would help overall, because Fran’s style of switching between the two to confuse the opponent is clearly not working and never has.

Sometimes their press is effective, but it also requires them to use quite a bit of energy guarding the entire floor. I think they should do less full court press.
