PSA. As if 10:00 am, The HYVee on Douglas Avenue in Urbandale has the 2016 Abyss and barrel aged Ten Fidy at its growler station. The Abyss is priced very well.
I am!Trying to wrap my head around this. It's like saying that you are a fan of a 16 oz filet mignon and Hamburger Helper. LOL!
Water is cheaper and costs less.I will start...
Or this especially in the summer
I haven't tried the Founders KBS. How does it compare to Goose Island's?Varies depending on my current mood/craving/taste. That said... perhaps Founders' Kentucky Bourbon Stout.
Full, rounded body... the bourbon barrel aging really helps this. Semi sweet. Roasty chocolate helps finish off the sweet and smooth up front. Really kicks at 12% abv.
I really like the BPS in the summer. Particularly the grapefruit or mango keel.New Glarus Moon Man
Ballast Point Sculpin
Surly Todd the Axe Man

I don't mean to be skeptical but, on 4/1/2016, the Draught House on Mills Civic in West Des Moines had a keg of KBS. We lucked into being there and had a long conversation with the General Manager who didn't have a clue about the KBS phenomenon. He was stunned that my wife and I were so thrilled to be paying $9 for a full pint (I'd pay that or more for a snifter). He told us that the keg cost approximately $1,000. He felt that the price would "scare" away customers but he was constrained due to the keg cost. If you do the math, with no waste (they were not allowing "tastes"), the bar would make about $116 on the keg. I told him that we appreciated the price but that he was underpricing it. For full pints (16 oz), he should have been charging at least $12, if not more. In actuality, he should have been serving it in 8 oz snifters for $9. He would have not only doubled his revenue but that is how a KBS or other high-gravity, barrel aged Stout should be served.
If you found a bar selling it at $5/pint, that bar would have lost about 35% on their purchase of the keg.
The Des Moines metro received a grand total of 6 kegs of it last year. I have a hard time believing that any of those establishments didn't understand that they were receiving a limited release, that they were paying a premium price and priced the pours so that it would take a hit financially.
That written, if you find an place like that - please post it immediately. I'll throw my growlers in the car and take advantage. If they are willing to sell $5 pints, perhaps they'd be naive enough to sell growlers of it.
And, yes, I already know that I'm a stout geek/dork/snob. One must recognize one's faults.
Speaking of stouts ... Madhouse is having its Carpe Diem 2017 release on 2/17. Great local stout. Could be the best. Better than Milkman Stout, Sir Moch A Lot and, IMO, better than Jesus On A Forklift (although the latter is really good).

I liked reading your post and agree with some of what you said but there's a few points you made I'll attempt to refute.
As far as what they paid for the keg, I think the manager was exaggerating a tad...even if they got a 1/2 barrel of that beer, $1000 for one keg seems exorbitant. Most places got 1/4 barrels from what I saw and I'm guessing those were more in the range of $250-400. I wouldn't bet my paycheck on it, but I'm pretty sure more than 6 places in DSM got KBS. I doubt a place like el bait shop was limited to just one keg.
I'm sure most places that brought it in were aware of the high price tag but all it takes is the wrong manager being on duty when a keg blows and putting on a special release beer they weren't aware of just so they don't have an open line when they're busy. It happens more than you would think.
You're right on carpe diem being a great stout. It's because of the emergence of great local breweries like that that you no longer have to step over your own grandmother to get beers like KBS or hopslam. Plenty of other good options nowadays
I have relatives in NC that bring up a couple cases every 6mths it seems...I have one more of those in my fridge. Need to smuggle some more back from the east.
