Federal funding freeze stalls Iowa's mine restorations

Thank you. Couldn't think of the name, Dutch Hollow. Looking at it on Google maps, it looks like it is Dutch Hollow, as it mentions it is part of the Pella Game Management Area and they appear to be working there.

I never did any drinking at Dutch Hollow…..I was a “Star” boy…..

Yeah, best to just let this shit be.
Looks like a tourist attraction to me. The kids will love it.

So we let Farmers destroy our lands and water but we call this an ecological disaster?
Yes we do. Have you ever really spent time at an abandoned strip/coal mines? Ever really looked at how it ravished the landscape and destroyed it? Made it unsafe for people or habitat? If you’re 60 years old or more…perhaps you have a recollection.

It’s a HUGE problem in this part of Iowa……strip mines and coal mines are everywhere and when they were abandoned, they were not safe for public……something had to be done and ther state couldn’t handle the problem so the Feds intervened….this is stuff that is 30-50 years old and is slowly being taken care of as time and budgets allow…..Its a REAL problem where these mines exist and needs too be taken care of….These mines have been closed down for a variety of reasons generally by actions by the State and federal governments.

Old coal mines out here in CO have been a problem for years.

IIRC, there's one that is still burning, ignited by lightning or something years ago.

My point being we are really going to bitch about this when Iowas whole economy gives farmers free passes on this kind of stuff? Money would be better spent on forcing those eco terrorists to clean up their destruction of nature.

One in Centralia, PA that has been burning for 63 years.

The Centralia mine fire is a coal-seam fire that has been burning in the labyrinth of abandoned coal mines underneath the borough of Centralia, Pennsylvania, United States, since at least May 27, 1962. Its original cause and start date are still a matter of debate.[1][page needed][2][3][page needed] It is burning at depths of up to 300 ft (90 m) over an 8 mi (13 km) stretch of 3,700 acres (15 km2).[4] At its current rate, it could continue to burn for over 250 years.[5] Due to the fire, Centralia was mostly abandoned in the 1980s. There were 1,500 residents at the time the fire is believed to have started, but as of 2017 Centralia has a population of 5[6] and most of the buildings have been demolished.

They are long gone out of business Bruno….abd understand that “mining” was a way of kids for millions of Americans back 100 years ago or so…Iowa had a robust mining (coal) industry especially the southern half of the state…
I agree with you that one would think we would learn from past experiences… but long ago, mining was powerful in Iowa just as today, farming runs the state.

Boone County has mines all over the place. Not sure if anything was done to placate possible sinkholes.

Gov. SHAPERO sued THUMP and the govt for the Federal funding that was holding up and received 2 billion dollars yesterday. The state will now start plug leaking mines, and determine other problems. Great job JOSH.

I don’t know why the “paying due bills” is such a Republican thing but it is. Congresses authorizes payment and then, Like Lucy, they wanna pull the football away just before contact. I thought Republicans were the Party of fiscal responsibility but instead they act like Donald Trump trying to phuque over a contractor on one of his projects.
