Nobody happier than Ferentz about this bowl. Ferentz will receive $500,000 as part of his contract if they win which would put him at 8 wins. What’s more, if he’s still Iowa’s coach on Jan. 31st, he will get $650,000 more. In addition, Ferentz will receive a $100,000 bonus for the bowl game.

So hes NOT getting $1.25M for the Pinstripe Bowl. What a terrible headline. Try again.

I have never begrudged anyone for the money he or she makes, but i must say, Kirk has a very sweet deal! It is noteworthy that he gives back to the University and he is a first class representative of the school. Part of me wishes that as he ages, he would get grumpy and start being a little bit edgy and less diplomatic all the time! Maybe, incorporate a little Mike Leach talk!!!

No kidding. The OP could easily get a job for Yahoo or some other website like this with misleading headlines.

Side note for those who are going to complain about KF getting all this extra incentive $. This may shock some but almost every coach has bonuses in their contracts for stuff like this.

Unbelievable were are awarding a half a mil for a 8-5 season. You just can't make this stuff up.

Why is that unbelievable? You think there are any coaches in the P5 conferences who dont get a bowl bonus?

Some might wonder why coaches get a bowl bonus when only about 30 percent of teams DON'T make a bowl.

A bonus for making one of the top 10 or 12 bowl games, fine. After that, any bowl bonus is bogus, IMHO.

well... to be fair any coach that doesn't have to prepare for a bowl game doesn't have bowl practices, film study, travel prep and arrangements, its' not like he's not working for the money...

I have no problem with this as it is part of his compensation package. We are lucky to have him for as long as we have. Beside he has probably donated most of his money anyway and is a good steward for the state.

The $500K is for winning eight games-it's not a bowl bonus, Gilligan.

We're paying a guy $4 mil + in salary before any end of the season bonuses-IMO if we're paying a guy that much and he only wins 7-8 games there should be a financial penalty. Ridiculous.

My bad so it's only a hundred thousand if they go to the bowl game. I assume then that you don't want the Hawks to win the game so we don't have to pay the $500,000 right Ginger? That would make sense especially to you. Instead of bitching why don't you give us a solution as to coaches bonuses per the number of wins they have. Sounds like you really know what you're talking about so I'd like to hear it. Thanks!

Iowa has lost at least 5 games 7 of the last 8 years. Kirk's career Big 10 winning % is 56%. Our head coach is making $4 mil + per season. Justify for me he deserves a bonus for # of wins in a season. He should be damn grateful he is getting his regular $4mil per yr.

Solutions: Fire Barta. Hire a AD that does not reward average performance.

There ya go, Professor.

Good for him, that's called capitalism, maybe we should have all gone into coaching so we could earn millions of dollars working 7 days a week.

What exactly is Kirk's "work", all 7 days of the week, every week of the year? This should be interesting. It's obvious that he burns every last ounce of energy to get the best recruits possible.

Thought we might start seeing LESS here about KF's salary.

Willie Taggert (47 - 50 career) will get $5 million a year. Jimbo Fisher has been successful, but certainly not beloved. He gets $7.5 million. I don't know what Herm Edwards is getting, but I don't think he's ever won a game as a HC in college. In any event, KF is sliding down the coaching salary ladder.

I, for one, am glad that Iowa is not participating in this coaching carousel. It's pretty ridiculous.

Seriously, If you need someone to explain Kirk's work to you, then you obviously don't know a thing about coaching college football, so I will leave it at that. What do you think, he works 9-5 M-F, goes home at night, kicks back in his favorite recliner and pops open a beer?

At least we didn't pay Bielema $12M to go away. Lots of trolls on this board wanted that fat whale.

Salaries have caught up to Kirk's so I don't see the point in arguing over the $/yr anymore. The problem is and always will be the length of the contract (+ very Kirk friendly buyout).

This is precisely how you should want contracts structured and you should demand MORE of this. Bonuses for winning bowl games, bonuses for getting to better bowl games and bonuses for winning those better bowl games. Bonuses on records, for the entire staff. There should be few complaints with handing a $1M dollar bill to KF for making the Rose Bowl and another $500k-$1M for winning it. There should be NO complaint with handing him and his staff $3M for winning the playoffs.

Ask yourself why, though? He isn't getting fired and he either is/isn't leaving. If he leaves it doesn't matter. Only, I repeat, ONLY the people who have ignorantly, stupidly, believed he was ever going to be fired complained about the length. If something inappropriate happened he would be fired for cause, again, his outright firing for his record is the only thing that would support your complaint.

For a comparison, which was in an article earlier this year, it said Les Miles hadn't been home before 10pm in like a decade at LSU. And was out the door at the crack of dawn. Anybody claiming they don't work "hard" should really reconsider. Obviously one could still complain about value.

I don't work hard, but I am not a football coach. ;) But your right, these guys put in tons of hours.

Rewarding mediocrity.
Where did Barta learn that?
Oh that's right, the people who hired him are okay with Barta being near last in the directors cup most years. Oh wait, that's not Barta mediocrity, that's Barta failure.

Matt Campbell gets $500,000 bonus for being average. Needs 6 wins. Mediocrity pays at ISU.

He got more the $500,000 per win for his 7 regular season wins.
I don't believe that is correct. According to what I have read, the assistants receive a bonus for 7 wins, but Kirk needs to get to 8 wins to get the $500, 000 bonus.

Barta needs FIRED

Agree. I actually don’t think Kirk is overpaid overall, Iowa has the 20th best winning % of P5 teams over the past 5 years. However, how can you negotiate a contract that rewards mediocrity. We should award bonuses for 10, 11, and 12 win seasons not 8, especially if that includes a bowl game.
