A staple of Iowa's past successes! Absolutely can't do it if you can't punt and can't get a few first downs on most drives. An Iowa team that can't run the ball has zero hope to win games..

The punting was horrid.

There has to be someone better on the team or campus that can punt better. If you had this display in the nfl you would bring someone else in.

Poor punting and fair catches at the 7 yard line are hard to overcome when you treat offense like a gangrenous limb.
The old rule of thumb is to stand at the 10...if it's over your head you get away as fast as you can. Apparently the ST coach has a new rule because Jackson doesn't do that more than once if he's not following orders.

Sure seems like there could be a soccer player or high school punter that could give it a go.

The punting was ridiculous! Give credit to the defense. Should have lost by 35 with that offensive performance. Especially enjoyed that 25 yard "runner" punt from our 10 that was just above our linemans head.

Someone please tell Josh Jackson to fake the fair catch then run forward to allow the ball to go into the end zone please. If he catches the ball inside the 10 or at the goal line again then let's the ball land and bounce 10 to 15 yards when Iowa needs those yards to try and sustain a drive, I'm gonna throw my shoe through my flat screen.

Fielding punts this season has been terrible and KF brought in a guy to help manage it. Good lord!

3 OC's and the same boring, predictable offense. Does anyone really think the OC at Iowa calls the plays? The plays are Kirk-approved, which are predicated on ultra-risk aversion and maximum predictably. Wadley with 28 yards rushing today. Great way to adjust Brian Ferentz--keep running at 8-9 guys in the box to ensure we put Stanley in obvious passing situations.

Defense plays their asses off again despite the anemic O giving MSU short fields all day. I give the D one more game like this before they get tired of carrying the team and then the wheels will really come off. Any team that puts 21 points up against us has a great chance to win. Illinois is the only team remaining on the schedule that may struggle to do that.

Comical how many Iowa fans bought KF's spin about recognizing the need for change on offense i.e. scapegoating Greg Davis. For a guy who talks incessantly about accountability, he shows none when it comes the offensive failures year after year. His arrogance prohibits him from getting a mobile QB, which would at least give us the scramble / QB run option to use when teams load the box (see Brad Banks).

OL coach in over his head. Does not have these guys ready. Nobody seems to know assignments. Brian needs to step in.

I returned punts in high school '87-'89. That was one of the first things I learned. I was told to stand on the 10 yard line. That way, I knew where the point of no return was. "Stand here. go forward to field the punt, but don't go backwards. If the ball is going over your head, let it go."

You learned that in high school?

Very interesting. Like I said before... the first time he fielded inside the 10... that's on him. All the subsequent times.. the coaches must be ok with it! So the obvious conclusion to me is "What the hell is the logic for that approach"? There is at least a 50% chance the ball bounced into the end zone.

I'd say more like 80% chance it goes into the end zone.

Agree mostly but, I was ok with returning the last one because we were desperate for a big play. Our offense sure wasn't going to provide one.

We owned the field position battle and your defense stood tall multiple times but your offense could never finish.

Pretty common theme game after game. If you can't move the ball past your own 30, field position is going to continue to be poor.

I understand what you're saying but really where we started had no bearing on this game. 10 or 25, we were just repository of @hit on offense, only difference it would have made was whether MSU started at the 35 or 45 on our side of the field. We could have started from the 40 but our offense and punting we're atrocious.
