I could be wrong but I think the Ronnie Lester team was 10-8 in the Big Ten season. Much better non conference success. Also NCAA only took 48 teams that year.

Final four in the next 6 years I've been playing. Fran is finally getting the recruits he's wanted m. This years recruiting class may not rank star wise as the best class, but it's by far the best recruiting class in frans tenure.

Yes, OP and other posters, the 1980 Iowa team was 10-8 in the Big Ten, fourth place, and went on to finish fourth in the nation as well. And yes, Iowa never lost a game that season when Lester was healthy. I was there when the Louisville mugger tackled Ronnie from behind on a breakaway, reinjuring Ronnie's knee. The guy who did it was a thug with no B-ball skills. I will always believe he was in the game to do exactly what he did. Of course, Louisville is a paragon of virtue otherwise...:(

Iowa could have/should have won the national title in 1970 with John Johnson, Fred Brown, & Co., and they could have/should have won it again in 1980 but for the Lester injury early in the semis.

Those two seasons ended with typical Iowa misfortune, but hey, the Cubs won the World Series, so there's a whole new world of possibilities out there for these baby-faced Hawkeyes and their Sudanese senior scoring leader. Is it Thursday yet?

I'm with you all the way on the mugging of Lester. I, too, believe that was a directive from the coach to do whatever it took to eliminate Lester from the game.

For those who haven't seen it, the foul is at the 26:28 point. A foul, but not at all dirty.

Iowa would not have lost more than 2 or 3 games in a tough Big Ten, if Lester had stayed healthy his senior year. Kenny also played hurt most of that season. Mark Gannon sat out the entire year, which hurt their depth. You can never say that Iowa was the best team that year, but I think Louisville would have been the only other team in the conversation.
