He's an embarrassment to our university. With every loss, many due to his inability to coach defense, he acts like a child.

We talk about the nepotism in the football program; what about all the minutes going to his son when the team clearly played better without him?

I wouldn't blame Bowen one bit for transferring; I sure as hell wouldn't take getting no playing time watching 22 look like a DIII player game in and game out.

Time for new leadership.

Which loss were you speaking to exactly?

No he isn’t, and you just typed for us all how you don’t know what you’re talking(typing) about

I'm right here. Saved by some miraculous shooting and terrible coaching by Izzo in the last minute.

It doesn't change the fact that Fran is an embarrassment on the sideline and can't coach defense.

I've defended the guy for years but can't do it any longer. No coach should last this long without a single sweet 16 appearance.

So Fran out coached a HOF’er in Tom Izzo?

Find me a better option and I'd definitely listen, but grass is always greener, to fire him for making the tourney almost every year but not going far aint gonna happen. Just look at the football team... rarely horrible/great, always good/average... its who we are.

CMac is responsible for more wins than losses. You do remember the game he had 13 assists, right? He didn't score in double figures but those assist account for 26 points. He is the glue that holds the team together. PMac isn't starter material right now but the starters can't play 40 minutes.

I do agree Fran needs to be more under control. I don't mind him at all. Then I think of all the things he does off the court, for cancer and other projects, and it's hard to call him an embarrassment. I wish he would be more under control and Kirk more on fire but I'm fine with both of them. We don't have a good offense in football but our defense is elite or damn near it. We make plenty of mistakes on defense but our offense leads the Big Ten. Each has their own philosophy. Live with it!

Next time you might want to watch the game to the end before posting like a bratty little baby.

Fran was looking to get a T and get thrown out not coach the last 90 seconds. Credit to the assistant and Tony trying to diffuse the situation.

I'm assuming OP was posted with about 2 minutes left in regulation?

The finish doesn't change anything. I'm happy those kids pulled it out, but that doesn't change the fact we plays terrible defense and have a coach that is a laughing stock. Bobby Knight wannabe.

2nd round appeances are the ceiling under Fran.

So the coach with 1 top 100 player beats the coach with 8 top 100 players and he's the inferior coach?

I’ve been frustrated in the past with Fran, but the Big Story on Chris Street really hit home with me how much this program needed someone like Fran to embrace our history and turn Iowa BB into a family again.

His players clearly love him and fight for him. That’s important. Sure, I would love for recruiting and defense to be better, but we’ve had some good times with him on the sideline.

I don't get it. Some fans don't like Fran or KF, so they spend their posting time focusing, almost exclusively, on their weaknesses.

Well right now Iowa is 1/2 game out of 3rd place in a VERY tough conference.

Hawks put up 112 points against team that usually plays great defense. But, but, the Hawks suck at defense!

50.7% FG %
47.2% 3 pt%
Assists 25
Rebounds 32 (outrebounded MSU by 6)
Steals 10
TO's 9 (in a very fast paced game)

Some really good things happened in this game! A great offensive performance. A great demonstration of heart and determination in the last couple of minutes.

But, but, Fran had a tantrum!

This right here is what is wrong with people. You can't even admit you were wrong and stupid, so you change the goalposts. Gojojump off a bridge.

Not sure how many of these threads were started, but you could argue that the stare down was the best thing Fran could have done. Iowa certainly never gave up and played better after. This game will go down as one of the strangest games ever.
I wasn't a fan of this move by Fran. It looked terrible. He's very fortunate he didn't get T'd up or the miraculous comeback would not have happened. Fran has got to get a hold of himself and focus on coaching.

Also, I can’t be critical of OP as I posted on the OT board that it was time to start fading the team as it looked like their season was falling apart.

I could do without some of Fran’s antics. Some of the stuff he does really looks unprofessional and immature. But, nobody is ever going to say or do exactly what I want them to.

Its very clear that he is trying to intimidate the referee. I have seen coaches tossed for much less.

So by the same logic, Pfieffer was trying to intimidate Fran? Come on.

Fran said nothing to Pfieffer and made no gesture towards him other than a step from about 10 feet away. It was so confrontational that the second ref who was about 15 feet away didn’t even feel the need to move closer.

I’d love a few examples of coaches thrown out for “much less” though.

Is there a trophy for a Sweet Sixteen appearance?

In all honesty, Fran's T wouldn't have lost the game, and his stare-down didn't have anything to do with their winning. At that point in the game, everyone thought it was over. You never come back from 10 down, that late in the game, without some help from your opponent and making some long shots. Everything has to go perfect for you. They had a turnover, gave up an offensive rebound, and missed the FT that could have made it a 4pt. game. Meanwhile, the Hawks hit 3 3-pters.
Fran's stare down was interesting and will get him a lot of attention...guess it's in the eye of the beholder whether it is a positive or negative for Fran and the program. I think anyone, who isn't an Iowa fan, looks at Fran as a loose cannon and someone whose self- control might be questioned. Not sure if that will be a positive for Fran recruiting wise.
I found the referees response interesting, also. He certainly wasn't intimidated, and I would think Fran was lucky he didn't open his mouth.

I would love for someone to do a deep dive into this. How do teams actually do after their coach gets a T? Do they go on runs? I'd be willing to bet it doesn't have the impact that people think it does.

When he got this T, it was "jack up 3s and hope for a miracle" time. This doesn't end up well 99% of the time.

Admidt I was wrong? Its an opinion that it's time for a new coach, 90 seconds of very fortunate play doesn't change my mind.

How many P5 programs would employ a coach for 13 years without a sweet 16 appearance? I can't think of another off the top of my head but if you know of any please share.

Great job by his kids to bail him out. Too bad they need him to throw a temper tantrum to play with fire.

Had Fran gotten the technical he wanted Iowa would’ve lost, embarrassingly. So lucky. Board would’ve been completely different than it is now. Winning hides a lot of issues that still have never been addressed.

Fran is no Kirk Ferentz, not even close.

I was just discussing the recruiting impact today. Everyone here is used to it and the players all say that he fights for them, which most coaches do. But some players or parents from a distance are likely turned off by his temper. What percentage of the top 150 are turned off by this? Hard to say but it's probably more than zero.
