So we got in around 1 PM today and it was snowing to beat hell...slippery as hell. Wife thought it was beautiful. We decided to catch a cab to the match as the hotel's shuttle was running because of weather, I guess. We had great seats courtesy of HawkeyeCrazy who sent me his tickets for free. Big ups to HC for hooking us up...we took more pictures than an Japanese tourist at Disneyland. Because of HC's kind gesture, we are going to donate $50 to Wrestling For Life in his name...I tried to explain to my wife that it's just how Iowans are. BTW, she still thinks I was born in Cedar Rapids instead of Cedar Falls. I don't even correct her anymore.

Thought the hype video was going to be a lot better prior to the guys running out to the mat. Not going to get into a rundown. Pretty tired...the trip almost didn't happen for us as my sister in law had a minor heart attack last night in Yuma so we got about three hours of sleep last night. My wife asked me what we should do and I was like:

Seriously though, my wife got a copy of her EKG and thought it was questionable that it was a heart attack...I left it up to her and here we are. My sis in law is at home tonight doing ok.

Probably the only match that got my blood going was Kem Dawgs. Seriously, what can you expect when your walk out music is "Who let the dogs out?" Why not Bark at the Moon? Freshman growing pains and all in the big house... he hit the wall big time. Should have had that cradle for the pin.

Thought Paddy McRib (Downey) was for sure going to wrestle. McRib can make all the excuses in the world but if he was good enough to go "in case," he was good enough to go. This is a guy who did not want to wrestle in the spotlight...could have gotten a "moral" victory for ISU against Sammy if he was really that confident he was going to win. I think old Paddy would have given Sammy a great match but would have died in the third period...speaking of, I think ISU's 125....whoever that is this week is still crawling towards the locker room PG (post Gilman).

Was able to catch Spencer's and Warner's finals matches. The kid from Florida was a big hombre compared to Spencer and a very good wrestler. Still, think old man Lee better make Spence build and live in his own "A Frame" shelter out in the woods for a week for giving up that takedown ;) A smart tactical match from Lee. Warner was very business like. My love hate relationship with Flo con...tin...ue <reloading> cont <reloading> continues. All in all...a pretty good wrestling day.

As far as I'm concerned Downey will now only be referred to as "McRib" from here on out! Perfect

Glad you got to see carver for the first time Chief! Sounds like you had a great experience.
I'm sorry to say that I don't think you've yet experienced the true magic of carver when the Hawks wrestle.
Hope you can make it back another home dual when all ten of our guys are going after it.
When that happens against a quality team, there is no better sports atmosphere in the world that can compare.

Chief- Was this by the HawkeyeCrazyin Section A? I sit right in front of HawkeyeCrazy or HawkCrazy or something like that. I think he has multiple seats in the location. Imagine, I might have been that close to AZ(IA?)Chief...

Haha...I was in HH about 16 rows up

Upset? You guys haven't had too many upsets at Carver (I mean that as a compliment).
The "upsets" that the guys are referring to are likely some of the big INDIVIDUAL wins. The two that come to mind are both against the Cowboys. Schwab beating Guerrero and Ramos beating Oliver, I think. Others of note would include beating lil Sanderson in Cael's return to CHA as PSU coach.

Ironside over Kolat. Simpson over Voelker.

Bark at the moon classic.

McRib....love it and wish I thought of it.

Great write up as always. ....now plan to get east next year for Iowa v psu

If we end up here in the Midwest, I will end up going to State College at least once to meet some of you all. When is PSU slated to host B1G again? My goal would be to hit our dual in Spencer's first one in PA.

I would have really liked to link up with some HR guys but I was with my wife and didn't want to leave her sitting there. I think she liked the dual. Was like holy shit with Gilman and Brooks, texting and facebooking with the other matches. She did state, "I don't know anything about this sport but it seems to me that the other team doesn't do much cardio work. They are really out of shape." She felt bad for Kemerer..."Look at how red his face is." I tried to explain that sometimes you physically hit a wall and everything turns to jelly. So I was like, "You know, like with me after a minute of...uh vigorous cardio" Sympathetic understanding dawned on her face.

Overall, I think she understood how difficult the sport was. She couldn't believe that Gilman could work that hard the whole time. She loved the ice cream. Running around town, she has been very impressed with Iowa City. She was like, "everybody wears Hawkeye gear here." While we live in Tucson and have the U of A, it's nothing compared to a B1G college town in terms of fandom.

You're in Section A? I'm in Section A. Reasonable, calm, seasoned wrestling fans in Section A. Nobody gets emotional or loud or "Crazy."

;)

I haven't seen anybody refuse to come back to the middle of the mat like that for a long time. I was rather surprised, then I looked at the roster and saw that the kid was from Oklahoma.

Hmmmm. Brought back memories.
