I said this earlier, but not all of the QB's on Iowa's roster will be around next fall. In fact I guarantee it. That is of course unless a couple of them become wide receivers. 🙃

I thought Sully would be QB1 not only for the bowl game but next fall as well. Now Hank is in the mix, of course. KF & Lester have both said positive things about Stratton. Jimmy & Ryan haven't even moved to campus yet.

But, who the heck knows....

The current QB Room:

Another thing: I wonder what Hank is thinking. He officially signed yesterday.

Your guess is as good as mine on any of this, but Brown was the 48th ranked QB in the portal by 247, and I'm sure there are a good number of QB's ranked above him that won't find a landing spot at a P4 school making his selection for anything other than depth a little bit curious. He had to know that this was going to be a competitive situation shaping up.

My understanding is that there’s a somewhat of a mini qb comp between Sullivan and stratton, but that Sullivan is expected to win that. Idk that anyone has said anything beyond that. Which is correct imo - would look pretty discouraging if they anoint Sullivan as QB1 and not have a comp in the spring based on current circumstances.

Honestly, I’d still like to see Stratton to get bowl snaps as well.
Pribula is better, if he wants to be here Lester wants him, regardless of brown or sully. Dudes good and I’m sure PSU wishes he would stay
Considering both have limited playing time I’m not sure how anyone can say which of the two is better.

It is really simple to see if you watch game film of the two. The biggest statistic adding to this argument isn't just the INTs, but it is Pribula's rushing ability. In 94 carries he has 571 yards rushing, this is the major component as to why many want Pribula. Not to mention the general eye test.

If we happened to land him I won’t be unhappy, just saying that both have only limited playing time.

I’ve admittedly only seen Pribula used as a change of pace guy, and Brown not at all.

Yeah, Hank has 3 years eligibility left. I thought he was the transfer QB Lester wanted. Not sure why Iowa needs to add another.

With Brown and J Sullivan coming, Iowa is still only at 3 scholarship QBs. The roster cap has gone down, but the scholarships haven’t. I’m guessing Iowa getting another QB or not, is the difference between Stratton going on scholarship or not.

Also, they didn’t know Pribula would be available a week ago.

Yeah. At PSU Pribula has shown himself be a better QB statistically than anyone on the Iowa roster by pretty much every metric, and by a large margin. How that would translate at Iowa remains to be seen.

Saying someone is a better QB statistically than anyone on the Iowa roster is hilarious because of how low the bar has been set.

Also not necessarily a fair argument considering what pribula had to work with at Penn state, and then only as a backup.

Well, it's not hilarious because his statistics are actually really good, regardless of the bar. Light years better than anyone at Iowa really.

I already mentioned that PSU has a lot more around him than Iowa.

It discouraged me to see people say we need a better QB this fall when Sullivan and Stratton both had limited real time game action. Lester clearly wants a competitive QB room and those two with Brown now added to the mix represents the start. This Penn State QB looks interesting but he would step into an already full QB room as I think Lester likes both J. Sullivan and Fitzgerald coming in and I don't think we go beyond 5 with the coming roster restriction.

The OP asks a very good question here.

I would admittedly be very surprised if they added this guy as well, unless they know something about Stratton or Sullivan that we don’t.

He may develop into something, but if you watched the Nebraska game and thought he had a good arm, you should watch that film again.
I deleted that part of my post but will go ahead and respond. Don't know how you can really judge Stratton based on the Nebraska game. We only threw I think 12 times and seemed to really condense the playbook. I thought he showed a good arm in both the UCLA and Maryland games and Lester has commented on how much he likes his delivery and spin on the ball. Not sure why people want to count him out of the mix.

Why would you be discouraged by people wanting a better than last in the country passing game? You should be discouraged if the staff isn't doing everything they can to upgrade the most important position in football including bringing in the most promising players available to compete with the guys that are already here for the job.

It's almost like the last several years have conditioned Iowa fans to believe that this ridiculously bad offense is something they should just expect every year.

It's pretty simple to judge him, he over threw Buie on maybe a TD pass, you can watch the game film and tell me you are impressed with his arm. I'm not at the point. UCLA I'm not going to throw him under the bus, but he could have been the hero, ended up 3 for 6. Maryland, his completion percentage is only good because they were all short passes, he had a 5.4 yard per throw average. Lester is not going to speak out against the kid, but there is a reason he is being recruited over at this point.

In all honesty, Iowa had a good offense in 2019. Having the athletic freaks that were ISM and Brandon Smith helped a ton. ISM had over 700 yards receiving and Smith had over 400. Nate Stanley was a solid QB at Iowa, but no one here would say he was anywhere near the level of Bethard or Banks.

Yeah. That was still 5 years ago. Feels like a lifetime though.

Major difference between wanting a better passing game and wanting different QBs. I thought the entire offense looked instantly better when Sullivan and Stratton both entered the picture. We didn't throw very much with the offense centered around the running game which obviously affected the passing game.

The question becomes as we look to improve the passing game do Sullivan and Stratton fit what we need going forward? In my mind after working with Lester they can become very effective aside from any additions from the portal.

Honestly, I don't give a shit how many QBs we have or whether or not we hurt any feelings. This is now officially a business. It's KF, Lester, and Tyler's job to bring in the best players they can afford and everything will settle out in camp. Iron sharpens iron and competition breeds success.
This is the correct answer ^

It’s not like we are returning an All American at QB. Other programs have quality backups at QB, there is no reason we shouldn’t also.

In the portal age there is always the possibility of someone transferring. You can’t let that stop you from getting the best possible player you can reasonably get.

I don’t want to hear about the past, Lester is looking forward and preaching about the future.

Someone could come here and be a part of turning the Offense around. And be on a pretty damned good football team if the Offense becomes even decent.

No there isn't and you shot your own argument down when you commented on how the offense ran better after Cade got replaced. The quality of your QB is far and away the most important element of the passing game. It is far and away the most important position in football. You can't have a consistently good passing game without high level QB play. Why do you think Lester is offering QB's in the portal if he thought he had what it takes today? He doesn't.
