For Indy: Even sections Gold, Odd Sections Black!

I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised.

I will be very surprised if there are less than 35k, and fairly confident it will be over.

MSU will not have a strong following in comparison for several reasons. Did they even sell their 10k allotment? They have been there three times, didn't know they were going until Saturday, and they don't the best traveling fan base to begin with.

In this case, we both want me to be correct. :D
If there aren't more than 40k Iowa fans I'd be surprised. The Iowa athletic department had 16k requests right away ... and that was right after the Purdue game.

This could be one of those once-in-a-lifetime events ... the opportunity to see an undefeated Hawk squad play for the Big 10 Championship as a play-in to the play-offs for the national championship.

The price isn't bad, the proximity is favorable, and the event is historic for the program. Given how many Hawk fans drop far more cash and travel far greater distances during bowl season ... I think that the Hawkeye turnout is going to be insane.

If you want to have a better estimate of how many Hawk fans there will be ... it's simply a matter of asking when the game sold out. Hawk fans have known that they're in FAR longer than other fan-bases.

See now we're talking with substance. Didn't know they had 16K immediate requests which makes me much more open to the idea of 40K. Knowing that they had 16K ticket requests, I'd say the bare minimum will probably be 30K. That's exciting. Anything to turn this into more of a home game would be huge.

Slightly OT, but are 600-level sections not associated explicitly for either team's fans?... are they just a free for all for fans? 600-levels aren't listed as an Iowa/MSU sections on maps I've seen, but my section is behind and above the MSU sections. I still expect there to be at least a good number of Iowa fans in my section due to the 2 week head start in purchases and the hype behind 12-0.

I expect the Iowa-reserved sections to be black and gold. But it'd be cool if a bunch of the non-reserved sections have at least a small appearance of black and gold striping.

Iowa fans should wear GOLD, because MSU often wears the dark helmets or black pants for special games, and will make Iowa fans wearing BLACK mostly indistinguishable from the MSU fans in the darker stands.

$150+ ticket, hotel rooms downtown going for $300-$500 per night, plus transport. This isn't exactly cheap on two weeks notice. It's not like a bowl game where you have a month to plan ahead. Just saying.
Don't compare your check book to ours.

Besides, you realize there are hawk fans all over the midwest (and country) that are going to flock to this. For many it is a once in a lifetime deal and wouldn't miss it.

I have no doubt there will be 40k

I would love this to be a de facto home game and want to be wrong, but I just don't see a sound basis in expecting 45K fans.

Yes MSU sold their allotment. There is a lot of energy in their fanbase. They are confident that their team is a legit national title contender and headed to the playoff. I expect 20K+ MSU fans to be there similar to their last appearance against Wisky where stadium images showed it to be pretty much an even split. I will be happy if I'm wrong, but I think some of you are under selling the historical importance of this game on the MSU side of things.
So you expect 20k MSU fans. The stadium holds 70k.

Whose fans will be sitting in the remaining 50k seats ?

Stick to the plan. Of there are 45K or more hawk fans, it will look good.

I will wear a black shirt and gold hat, just to be safe

The fan split will be nearly even, possibly leaning towards Iowa. 3 to 1 Iowa fans seems over the top. We will find out Saturday night.

I would bet the house it's not an even split. It will be at least 60/40 Hawkeye fans

I'm not comparing check books. Just saying some fans may be holding out for the Rose Bowl or playoff.

There are a ton of re-sellers who bought tickets and fans of other teams who will be there. I was reading some blog articles on BTN about past games. But as I said, after hearing there was 16K demand immediately at the athletic office, I now think 40K is feasible.

Again comparing.

It's called deduction. We're talking in terms of 40K+ Hawk fans. Most of these fans are people with jobs, families, etc. There are possibly three games left all in bowl type atmospheres. The logical conclusion, using deduction, is that some fans may logically be holding out for what comes next. Be it the playoff or the Rose Bowl all of which would be in a vacation locale for the family. Indy does not fit that mold. But as I have ALREADY said, I am now on board with the crowd predicting 40K as a possibility. I wasn't aware of the 16K demand through the athletic office until it was announced in this thread.

You don't have to be wealthy to support the hawks in Indianapolis. I have a wife and 3 kids to support and have your basic middle class 245k a year salary. I can still afford to head over and hire a teenager to watch the kids for the weekend. It isn't a choice between this OR a bowl game/playoffs. It is a realization that this isn't an opportunity that will be knocking year after year, so you suck it up and find the money to go to this AND the bowl game/playoffs.

Hell, I only own nine oil wells in Saudi Aradia, and even I can scratch together enough dough to sneak over and see the Hawks on Saturday.

I'm holding out for the Rose or better (booked hotel and flights to LA). But my family has a group of about twenty going to Indy. I think it will be noticeable how many hawk fans are there.

Hopefully the boys see that support, and play their tails off.

It's a struggle but I get by. I guess you could say I'm a hero, but I'd probably deny it.

I think their plan would be to scalp tickets, which probably isn't a great idea since tickets are still being sold for a premium.

TBH, I'd bet there are a ton more Iowa fans than MSU fans. Even in my Iowa circle which is filled with people who go to 0-1 games per year there are a lot of people travelling to Indy. I went to school at ISU and know quite a few ISU fans (who really don't even like Iowa) travelling to this game to support the Hawkeyes. I imagine plenty of other social circles in the state are doing the same. Proximity will help MSU, but I doubt the Iowa athletic department would have encouraged this if they didn't know there is a hefty amount of the "free market" tickets being shipped to Iowa.

I thought that was a little weird, too. Maybe somebody will be trying to unload last minute tickets and they can be bought on the cheap..I certainly wouldn't chance it.

I would think that if someone had the means to travel to Indy and spend money for an expensive hotel, just go to stubhub and spend what you need to in order to get tickets.

What happens to your flight etc if Hawks end up elsewhere?

Southwest Airlines can change the flight for no fee, just the difference in airfare. Do not attempt this with a low fare Frontier type, they charge $99.00 to change your flight.

Hotel, I have until 12/17 to cancel for a full refund.
