For those concerned of Gabe Arnold's height at 184

I honestly do not see any pitfalls. (gonna take off the dad hat, and put on my coaching hat). The reality is short people are a pain in the arse to wrestle! Don't believe me? Look up Deron Winn. The dude is literally 5'6, and usually wrestled the big guys. In fact, if you dig deep enough you will find battles between him and......my nephew. One of which he thumped J at University Nationals after J's 1st NCAA title. Deron remained a problem throughout his entire wrestling career. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deron_Winn
Chance is also short for his weight and it causes guys problems. Hard to get underneath short guys. And all 3 dig that hook which makes it even harder

It is harder for a tall guy to get low enough to easily get to a short guys legs, especially it they are quick. I think the only concern people have with a short guy is being susceptible to the new method of defending shots with diving over them to grab a leg , etc…. And of coarse getting cradled. If the short guy is talented and explosive enough he can overcome all this . Spencer Lee, fix are good examples. They were even short for light weights. Deluca coming next year is going to be on the short end also, but I’m sure he will be very successful. I always assumed Gabe would be a 184 in college, so this move doesn’t surprise me.

174 PK
184 GA
197 AF
Angelo is not built as thick as AJ, which is why he had to try to beef up to make 184. I don’t see him as a good size 197 next year. He doesn’t like cutting much weight, but 174 may still be a reasonable cut for him this year and next. If he doesn’t go 197 next year, we will have a hole again, and may not get as lucky as we did this year with the quality of transfers available. Could throw miller to the wolves, but I think his skills are not there yet, and needs to add a lot of muscle and strength.

Very true. Chance has had success at 86kg (190lb) as well. He beat Evan Wick (who is like 3 or 4 feet taller than him) and Trent Hidlay at US Olympic Team Trials before falling to Zahid 3-0. The Hidlay win is no joke as Hidlay has a win this calendar year over Kentchadze, the 79kg world champion from this year.

He’s 19. Probably still growing

He's already over 200. And the dude loves to lift.

You want to be a solid lean 197. Not saying he may not get there in the future, but could be a solid 184 or possibly 174 next year. If you really want pk in the line up, then yes he goes 197 no matter what.

Next year 197 is a lot more likely than 174 for Angelo.
Hope he gets 5 matches and maybe an open at 184 this year. That would be crazy going from not cutting hard to make 165 as senior to 197 in college as redshirt freshman without getting taller. Could set up an NCAA tournament match with his brother.

I would be shocked if AJ is wrestling at all ever again by this year's tournament.

We will definitely see Angelo get some matches this year. He can compete unattached at the Salute

What did Bo Nickel and Brookes walk around at? If a guy is athletic and has decent strength, he can be very successful at 197. I thought Brookes looked pretty strong at 197, but I did not think Nickel did. From all accounts, Angelo is very athletic and strong.

Nickal is just a freak. Bird chest, "noodle arms" - but clearly had more strength than everyone else in the weight. What he did to Brucki is crime against humanity.

When Gabe was in middle school, we always joked him because he was shorter that EVERYONE he wrestled, not to mention always the youngest becomes he wasn’t held back. He got to HS, same song, different verse. Always the shortest. Always the youngest. But the one thing I appreciate about this kid is his ability to adapt and succeed. Last season there was not a single wrestler he went against that wasn’t taller than him. Probably the closest was Wolak in the Salute finals.

I said all that to remind folks that physical stature is not the most important factor in a match. It’s your mind. Gabe’s walk around is over 190. He’s cool with it. I’m good with it. Could he make 174? Sure he could, but he wouldn’t like it very much. However, if TnT want him down there, that’s where he’ll be. My advise to him is the same advice I’ll give to my cesspool brethren: Trust the process, in the end it always works its way out for the good.
I look at it like this: If your gonna pray; why worry? If your gonna worry; why pray?

I ain’t worried. I’m just praying. 😉

Bravo dad. You are right on....it's about his head. If he believes he can win there, then he can win there.

Unfair comparison to Nickal, but I agree he looked weak, but was wirey strong and his skills were too much, and he had decent length. Brooks looked like the hulk last year. Must have been sucking a lot of weight for 184

Nickal's elevator pin of MyMar in 2018 might be the greatest thing I've ever seen in 45 years of watching wrestling. That was 184, not 197, but his arms were even noodlier and his chest birdier at the lighter weight, too, and MyMar was a powerhouse at 184 and Bo flipped him straight to his back.

He was. Which made no sense to me, because Dean was a more natural 184. They should have switched weights.

The spladle against Sam Brooks off of what looked like a good single leg was sweet also.
