For those wanting Kirk Ferentz gone

Ponder this. Someday KF retires and maybe our next guy provides an uptick in recruiting to the point that we routinely blow out the teams in our region and have competitive games going to the 4th with the big dogs. Hmmmmmmmm
Something needs to change.
The days of a guaranteed 8-4/9-3 season are over.

And I just can't imagine KF enjoys recruiting and the NIL landscape.

Yeah but that doesn't work because all these guys believe it's an impossibility that Iowa's program could actually get better under new coaches. KF is the best we could ever hope for, the best Iowa could ever do, and so we need to hang on to him and pray he never leaves.

The older I get, the less I care about Iowa wins and losses.

I still watch and get slightly exited when things are going bad or good, but, call me old all you want, I'm more and more impressed and thankful for the culture Kirk (with a nod to Hayden) has created at Iowa.

The Nebby "no handshake" BS, the Mich/OSU end of game debacle, etc just make me proud to be a Hawkeye fan.

KF has had a great career, I respect him a lot and what he's done over the years and how he's represented Iowa. That said, I think it's time. But I doubt KF is going anywhere quite yet, I think he's going to give it another year or two, get through the high amount of senior talent losses with this class and to where he thinks will be a better state. He does seem to have taken some of the losses hard this year, especially UCLA. It's hard to finish a long coaching career strong though. The question of when he's going to retire will loom larger every year.

When Kirk does retire, I don't think Beth is a splashy hire type, she seems very pragmatic. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Seth Wallace promoted and most of the staff intact including Phil until he eventually wants to hang it up. I only see Beth opting for a major coaching overhaul if things really go south over the next few years.
Hope you’re wrong about Beth’s hiring. Dont really want an internal hire

There was a time not too long ago when Iowa had a truly competitive team. One that could compete and at times beat the top teams in the big ten. Ever since Kirk hired his incompetent son to be OC this has gone away and now it’s to the point where Iowa is a national joke - a known punch line - for horrendous offensive football. And BECAUSE Kirk is an ego maniac and control freak- he allowed it and kept his SON as the OC.
Iowa is a solid BIG Ten west team. Has had nice success against border states schools and has a great record against a terrible non-conf schedule forever. I realize many Iowa football fans will defend Kirk. He has won a lot of games and has had ELITE defenses. I am a fan that think what he did with his son is reason to force his hand to retire. He wasted amazing defenses over the last 6 years and has been routinely curb stomped in big games/ against top rated teams. These last years the offense can not compete.
There are coaches to get. Make Phil Parker HC - at least there is a chance he would allow for an offense to thrive and compete.

We have never been guaranteed ANY wins ever. The team earns them. Year after year, internet posters predict crappy seasons that don't happen. Lots of 8+ win seasons.
Well I’ll call it right now, if Iowa wins seven games or more next year, I’ll be legitimately shocked. We didn’t do so hot without the Big Ten West and we had a super easy schedule.

But that goes beyond their tunnel vision way of thinking (the awww shucks, we’re just Iowa attitude). How would we know how we’d be able to recruit without Kirk in this modern era of football? He’s been at Iowa forever LOL
I think people like winning seasons. Wisconsin and Nebraska keep firing coaches. Nebraska in particular has really flourished. Lol. Wisconsin was going to the next level with fickle. Lol. Yeah the next level down.

Iowas record against ranked opponents since October 2021 is not good.

They are 0-9 against ranked opponents in that timeframe.

To make matters worse, they have been significantly outscored in those games. The combined score of those games is 368-63, meaning they have been outscored by an average of over 34 points per game.

This stat highlights their struggles against top competition in recent years.

Sincerely,
AI

True. Many teams struggle against ranked teams, especially on the road. Nine ranked teams since 2021. Maybe 2- 3 per year? So maybe a 1-2 we shoulda won. Looks like maybe 8+ wins again.

If Kirk wins his bowl game against an SEC team it would go a long way toward getting some of the fans and recruits back on board with him staying a few more seasons.

I’m more worried about our recruiting now. Kirk needs to have a succession plan in place. Maybe the portal makes that easier now since many of our recruits will only be coming here for one or two seasons of eligibility anyway

I’ve always said the problem with social media is giving dumb people a voice is dangerous. Why would anyone ever think it would get any better with a different coach. Take a look around ….. first off Iowa is the most consistent team in the country period. Secondly if you look for another team that was done as well as Iowa over an extended period of time and switch coaches …..they don’t get better…..almost all cases they get worse. We can all name teams that fall into that category. So to think that’s the answer there’s about a 90% chance you fall into the dumb person with a dangerous voice. My question would also be …. Who would be this coach you would want? No top shelf coach will ever come to Iowa because they also know this is not a destination for young people and or players and the state doesn’t have the population or enough top level players in the state to depend on. That have to depend on out of state players and not being a destination location you won’t get the players therefore you won’t get the coach’s you would like. Iowa will end up with a MAC coach. Yeah baby ….. that’s way better!

Doubtful.

Everybody knows that when KF leaves, Iowa is immediately going to sink to D3 levels - or lower. Nobody can replace his greatness.

Might as well end the FB program altogether.

We'll see how it goes. Take KF's conservative hand off the helm, shake up an assistant or two, and turn the reins over to Wallace. If Wallace is willing to be more modern and aggressive in his approach both on the field and in the portal, the rest of the staff seems generally good. I wouldn't mind seeing change at O-line and receivers. Barnett's O-line is better this year, but coming off several poor years. Budmayr's only had one year at receivers and the numbers are better, but how much is that Lester's system vs. BF and I've got to question Bud's eye for talent connecting us with Cade and Deacon.

KF has to go.

Raiola saved KF some criticism by fumbling.
What did KF do to earn praise for last night's victory?

Fickell won't last long at Wisky, but that shouldn't be a factor on KF being under pressure or being scrutinized.
The halftime show where the network people were making fun of Iowa is likely how Iowa football is perceived, nationally.
The longer he is kept around, the bigger the rebuild.
To some fans last nights game is the only way Iowa can win. It’s weird but even when Iowa ran all over other teams i don’t recall there being this “you sure you really want KF gone???!!?!” threads.

Maybe there are and I’m not as sensitive to it since the game wasn’t complete dogshit for 4 quarters (just 2)

Look, give Kirk credit last year and 2021 going to the championship game. Honestly that’s my goal every year cause if you give yourself that chance and win, then good things will happen. Most years it would mean a playoff berth

But what we have seen, and in 2015, is that Iowa is the fake id of college football, or one of them.

Iowa stands NO chance against quality opponents. Iowa held UM to their lowest output last year and it never felt like they had any chance once the score was 3-0

This is what HAS to change in the program. I don’t mind the bend - don’t break defense as it destroys really bad teams and can hang with good ones for a little while (exceptions happen). Special teams have been solid.

It’s the god damn offense. It’s been so bad for so long there’s no chance Kirk turns it around. Even with a generational talent in KJ, Iowa still couldn’t do shit against the best teams because it’s too much for a RB to handle.

So I’d like Kirk to retire. The next coach have similar philosophy on defense and special teams BUT try adapt to modern passing concepts.

I agree. Maybe chryst or Fitz could keep the party going. Lol at indiana. The play osu and get blown to bits.

This comment is incorrect, so I stopped reading right there.

Kirk has done a lot for the program, he's also dinged it up a bit during his tenure.

26 years and the Hawkeyes have become the very definition of "not a serious contender" at best.

Kirk should consider stepping away while the program is still in good shape with great fan support.

If the next 2-3 years see's them finish with 5-7 win seasons and no playoff appearances, I think you'll see fan support drop and the chances of landing a top-tier/up-and-coming young coach to lead them shrink to near non-existent.

The best they'd be able to do (if lucky) is bring in an older, conservative, semi-established "good guy" to lead them to 8/9-win seasons with regularity, but still with the "not a serious contender" label and probably no playoff appearances.

Not the end of the world, but I feel this fan base deserves better.

Kirk has been a great coach for Iowa. The best ever. But even the best ever reaches a point when it’s time to go. That time has arrived. This isn’t rocket science. Happens to every single coach eventually. It’s not a matter of disrespect. It’s just reality.

The nepotism was a horrible look and I strongly suspect he deeply regrets that poor move. Those who want him gone on that basis have a point. But regardless, the time has come. The game has changed, and it’s time for a changing of the guard.

Worst thing that can happen over the next few tougher schedule seasons is for Iowa to get 5-6 wins and one of them being against a top team

It would bring the tears and rushing the field and mask the fact that the program is continuing to slide backward

2024 season should be Kirk’s last. He had a chance to really make a statement and failed. Badly.

Now i think he’ll retire once he gets the Big10 win total

Certainly does. Says bad luck. Quad, knee, concussion ( Cade ), concussion, ankle ( Sully ), broken thumb in practice (Marco ), non contact knee injury ( Resar ). Enter 5th string walk on Stratton. One page playbook so you don't beat yourself. I chronicled how we were going to win in the game thread last night from page one to the end. Called it, while @QChawks , @Tom Paris and @RagnarLothbrok cried and gnashed their teeth for three hours, then cry about how we won. Gets so phucking old!
Lol. You are a moron, james.

This is a healthy perspective. We’ve seen what happens with Wisky when they try to reinvent their brand and identity and system with a splashy hire. Train wreck.

But Iowa’s defense has also benefited from some really pedestrian BIG 10 offenses.

But KF has relied for way too long on his defense and ST because he’s content winning 7-8 games a year doing it “his way.”

It’s actually quite self serving. And when Iowa loses 35-7 to an SEC team in their bowl game, the same excuses will be offered.
Deion Sanders is a “splashy hire.” Luke Fickle is anything but… Ohio State used him to fill a gap and sent him packing. He gets the Cincy job but was never flashy.

Lol. I didn’t even watch most of the second half because it doesn’t matter to me nearly as much as it used to. There was a better game on. Gnashing my teeth? That’s hilarious.

You mean the defense will score in the bowl game?
