Four-star DE John Waggoner is going to be a Hawkeye.

Four-star defensive end John Waggoner is staying home. After landing scholarship offers from all across the country this past year, the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Waggoner found the right fit in Iowa City with the Hawkeyes. Today, the state's top prospect made the call and officially gave his verbal commitment to the Iowa coaching staff.

"Iowa just felt like home to me and I was ready to make that decision," Waggoner told HawkeyeReport.com.

During the recruiting process, Waggoner picked up offers from the likes of Ohio State, Penn State, LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma, Florida, UCLA, Michigan, Michigan State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Indiana, Kansas State, and Iowa State in addition to Iowa.

As a senior, Waggoner finished with 27 tackles, 12.5 TFL, and 5.5 sacks as he helped West Des Moines Dowling win their 5th consecutive state championship in Class 4A.

Overall, Waggoner is commitment No. 15 for the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Class of 2018.

HawkeyeReport.com will have more on Waggoner's decision here shortly.

Yeah baby!

The DE’s will be very veteran next year and we will have 3 seniors in our top 5.

Hesse - Sr
A Nelson -Jr
Brincks- Sr
M Nelson - Sr (more of a DT, now)
AJE - soph

Then there are some guys who aren’t currently in the top 8 of our rotation like Gholston and Simon and Duwa. I have seen Reiff line up at DE as well, but he seems to be more of a DT. Reiff will be a junior IIRC.

We should be a pretty salty group from a DE standpoint in 2018. The following year after he gets a full year+ of being with Doyle will represent the best opportunity for him, IMHO.

Now, if he is so good that he blows by some of these guys on the depth chart and gets into the mix ( like AJE last year), I would be just fine with that!

great news!! and welcome to the team!!

couple side notes:
- seriously thought i saw a headline on IC press cit. website a week or two that said he had actually committed to Iowa. i didn't click the link at the time, and then said link wasn't able to be found a day or two after
- i don't know iowa HS football all that well, but dowling seems to put out some good talent. does iowa have a line into their best talent? feels like quite a few dowling kids choose the hawks.

I'm really excited about this. Very happy for John and his family.

I'm also very excited that PJ Fleckerhead didn't get him.

Seems like Romeo gets little or no attention. Also seems he has gained little in size.

Does anyone know anything about him?

We are now tied with Boston College in the Rivals recruiting team rankings. Oh, boy, I can just feel the rivalry between us building! We're going to end up hating them more than Purdue.

Please, don't make this a religious war.

Contrary to popular belief,we usually are

I am guessing the next two to commit will be Lockett and Stoops. Cradieth said he wants to wait until the second signing period. I think they have a good chance with Honas since they lose all starters and they have told him they he will have a shot at more than one LB spot.
Hope we are not losing ground on Craddieth. Sounds like he may still be mulling over his offers, or waiting for bigger offer in the month and a half after the early signing period. Don't want to miss on this guy.

It was for about a day or two before they re-evaluated and got back to the Waggoners last Thursday.

All's well that ends well.

Seems like a bigger story (cluster F by the coaching staff) than the commitment. Results were good, process seems broken.

Love the Clowns especially CtTwins and the rest on CF. He was a stud leaving the state. Iowa had no chance. Then he was staying in-state because rumor he was going to Iowa so nobody wanted him. Then when rumor he was going to ISU, they were getting a stud and Campbell out recruits Iowa. And now, flip isn't that good. My God ISU is pathetic. Watching CF which I do 3 times a week proves how little brother, delusional and pathetic they really are.

This idea would never happen but is really tempting with the talent we have on the line. We lose a lot of LB talent next year. So lets say Hooker and Snyder come back healthy next year, and Jackson comes back. I say, why not switch. LoL

So that whole "Hawks have moved on" story some were telling obviously couldn't have been true.
I think there's always at least a little fact in these rumors. KF has an in home with Waggoner, and tells him its time to make a decision or Iowa needs to keep looking. The young man goes over his priorities and a few days later announces his decision. Hmmm, maybe KF is a better closer then some think?

Really? Read the interview with JW that Blair posted. Sounded pretty positive from the young man on how KF handled the whole situation. Of course thats pretty common on here, people making negative posts about things when they don't know the whole story.

Great! Look at the list of top schools Iowa beat to get a 4 star prospect.
Everyone chill and take a deep breath. More to come.

Welcome aboard John! Really excited to see him joining the Hawks. His film is very impressive. He moves very well for someone his size, and has a very quick first step. He is going to be a great HAWK!
