New Story ****Four-star DE John Waggoner commits to Iowa****

I think nearly all like a multi million dollar contract more.
Just a guess though....
Correct to Davids post. We are talking about DJ Johnson honoring his commitment after the offer from LSU, and others. Not if Josh Jackson stays.

I would try to get a red shirt on Wagonner. Next year there is Hess, Brinks, M. Nelson as seniors. So the following year there will be a lot of PT up for grabs.

This just makes me think of the top instate recruit last year, Martin. I wonder if he will stay at Michigan?
Don't blame him at all for going there. Good school. But you have to wonder, if he really wants to play, will he stay because they played a number of freshman last year, they will continue to bring in NFL talent. He could be on the bench most of his career.

I wonder about this too, although it always seemed Oliver was in search of reasons NOT to pick Iowa. Perhaps he wanted out of the IC fishbowl but he has to know Mich will be scouring the nation for 4 and 5-star WRs and I really wonder if the kid will have second thoughts and want to come back?

Sounds like Waggoner always liked Iowa and was a strong Iowa lean since early Fall, although Kirk made it clear there were only so many rides and if he took official visits his ride could be in jeopardy, great close Kirk!

I too wonder how long it will be before O.M. starts to question his decision. Big O, I feel that way about Max Duggan currently, like he is just looking for anything that isn't Iowa. Which is fine. Too each thier own.

The difference is I don't think Duggan is an Iowa fan.

That's kind of the vibe I get. I wonder if he grew up a husker? He might be jumping for joy to get into the Scott frost O.

Did Oliver Redshirt this year? Thanks.

He didn’t have any stats but doesn’t mean he didn’t play.

Maybe someone can Chime in and verify one way or the other on his red shirt status. I know there were several who listed the WR's that were at the school already, those coming in with him in last years class and those being recruited for 2018. It seemed really odd that he chose Michigan with that kind of competition to get on the field. Really bad decision in my opinion.

Looking from the perspective we know have post '17, this is what I see at DE ....

Obvious DE starters in '19 = A. Nelson (LDE), Epenesa (RDE)
Obvious DE contributor '19 = Golston (LDE or RDE)

Remarks: Nelson has shown the flexibility to play on either side (LDE or RDE). By '19, Epenesa will know the D well enough that the coaches may feel comfortable enough to play him ANYWHERE on the DL to draw the best mismatch.

Eligibility in '19: A. Nelson (SR), Epenesa (JR), Golston (JR)

It will be very interesting to see if any guys jump out developmentally in '18 at DE .... such that they can work their way into the rotation, find their way into personnel packages, etc. IF the development of Epenesa can push Hesse more over to DT (not exclusively, necessarily ... just more) AND/OR the development of Golston can push Brincks more over to DT ... then that could open up more opportunities for other young guys ... but who? Ultimately, the young guys need to stand on their own feet and have their practice reps dictate to the coaches that they're worthy of seeing game reps.

So who are the "other guys?"

Possible Other Guys in '19 (who are currently on the roster):
  • Simon - undersized, but has garnered A LOT of praise from the coaches (at least in terms of comments made public). Will be a JR in '19. Saw action in ZERO games in '17.
  • Duwa - originally recruited at DT, but might get looks at DE first (a guy who reminds me of Kampman - could be a "surprise" player for us down the road). Will be a SO in '19.
  • Schulte - a kid who has honestly flown under my radar ... really productive in high school when healthy. Will be a JR in '19. Saw action in ONE game in '17.
  • McKnight - another kid who has flown under my radar .... interesting background, really good at wrestling. Will be a JR in '19. Saw action in ONE game in '17.
Given that Iowa demonstrated great loyalty to Schulte, McKnight, and Duwa ... each guy was injured during substantial portions of their SR high school seasons but Iowa stuck by them nonetheless ... I anticipate that they're less likely to transfer from the program. Thus, will Simon get impatient waiting for playing time and/or suffer from homesickness?

Given that Coach Morgan demonstrated a clear willingness to actively rotate 4 guys at DE if they prove that they can handle it .... this suggests to me that there should definitely be EARNABLE playing time at DE in '19 for the guy who best seizes the opportunity. Thus, John Waggoner could certainly work his way into the picture for playing time by then.

After watching his film, I feel like he could contribute as a wide-9 in obvious passing situations next year. Great get.
Yeah, there going to sit A. Nelson and Epenesa etc. because Waggoners sooo good. You people always crack me up. He won't jump Gholston. Bet me.

A position we have a hard time finding playing time for the guys we already have. Between Hesse; AN and the Nelsons. Now one more. The more great players the better but damn.
Jimminy christmas. MATT Nelson doesn't play DE anymore. Why do people keep saying this? Four DE's played about 50-50 on each side by the end of the year. A. Nelson/Brincks on the left side and Hesse/Epenesa on the right side and Gholston would be starting for some teams. Waggoner should RS as he will not even beat out Gholston, let alone the 4 that are currently in the rotation. Now, they might move Brincks inside and he 'possibly' could challenge Gholston for the 4th spot, but I don't see it. I'm rarely wrong about these things.

The DE’s will be very veteran next year and we will have 3 seniors in our top 5.

Hesse - Sr
A Nelson -Jr
Brincks- Sr
M Nelson - Sr (more of a DT, now)
AJE - soph

Then there are some guys who aren’t currently in the top 8 of our rotation like Gholston and Simon and Duwa. I have seen Reiff line up at DE as well, but he seems to be more of a DT. Reiff will be a junior IIRC.

We should be a pretty salty group from a DE standpoint in 2018. The following year after he gets a full year+ of being with Doyle will represent the best opportunity for him, IMHO.

Now, if he is so good that he blows by some of these guys on the depth chart and gets into the mix ( like AJE last year), I would be just fine with that!
Matt Nelson is only a DT now and has been all year and Rieff has never lined up at DE this year, lol. Don't any of you pay attention? Know what you're talking about before you give us your 'opinions'. Thank you.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD....ANOTHER PERSON TALKING ABOUT MATT NELSON AT DE!!! HE IS NOT A DE AND HASN'T BEEN ALL YEAR. YOU FOLKS LOVE TO TALK ABOUT THE GAMES AND GIVE US ALL THIS WONDERFUL 'ADVICE' BUT YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE ANYONE PLAYS???

I talked to Simon's dad after the spring game this year over at Old Chicago (the Paulson twins were there as well). He is a really sharp (and nice) guy and said that his son really liked it here and was making some good friends. So, he doesn't seem to be homesick for NJ. But, with him being buried on the Depth Chart he will have to decide if it's more important to be part of this team and get his degree or take a chance of going somewhere else where he 'might' get a chance to play. Tough choice and I don't begrudge any decision he makes.

This is a great early Christmas gift. Thank you John for making my day and giving our fan base something to shout about! Can't wait to watch you perform on the field next year!
If some kid you don't know committing to a college football team 'makes your day', you must not have much of a life. Sorry. A good friend of mine was pronounced cancer free today. Those are the things that make my day. And I can almost assure you that you won't watching him perform on the field next year unless the burn his RS on special teams or 3 DE's get hurt.

Just popping out from under the bridge for moment. See if I could get a 4th post reacting to feigned stupidity about the D line. I certainly know better. All in good fun.

Oh, it wasn't 'feigned stupidity' from some of the others who kept saying M. Nelson is a DE. There is a handful of posters that I love 'going off on' for affect. It keeps me entertained.

What are you talking about?
Go back and look? You think they're going to pull our 3rd team all conference DE (A. Nelson) who led us in sacks or Epenesa/Hesse and put Waggoner in NEXT YEAR (as you said). Lol. What are YOU talking about? And like I said, Waggoner won't even jump ahead of Gholston NEXT YEAR. They are probably going to move Brincks inside to get Gholston on the field. Oh, and how often does Iowa play a 'wide 9'?

I said in obvious passing situations with a package like our Nascar. Put our 4 best pass rushers in at one time like every team in the country does. Since that package is not position specific it could include AJ, Parker, Anthony and him. More than likely Waggoner will need a redshirt year, but if he can contribute on special teams and work in subpackages that would be great. I'm sure he's not ready to stop the run at the B1G level but his pass rush moves and hands are excellent and that is an area where many of our guys clearly struggle. I obviously don't know how many snaps we ran with a wide-9, no one does. But why could we not use it in our system? Really not that hard to figure out.

Four-star DE John Waggoner is going to be a Hawkeye.

Four-star defensive end John Waggoner is staying home. After landing scholarship offers from all across the country this past year, the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Waggoner found the right fit in Iowa City with the Hawkeyes. Today, the state's top prospect made the call and officially gave his verbal commitment to the Iowa coaching staff.

"Iowa just felt like home to me and I was ready to make that decision," Waggoner told HawkeyeReport.com.

During the recruiting process, Waggoner picked up offers from the likes of Ohio State, Penn State, LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma, Florida, UCLA, Michigan, Michigan State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Indiana, Kansas State, and Iowa State in addition to Iowa.

As a senior, Waggoner finished with 27 tackles, 12.5 TFL, and 5.5 sacks as he helped West Des Moines Dowling win their 5th consecutive state championship in Class 4A.

Overall, Waggoner is commitment No. 15 for the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Class of 2018.

HawkeyeReport.com will have more on Waggoner's decision here shortly.

Blair, any reason why Nixon isn't included in Iowa's commit list? Is it because he is still being counted towards last year's class?

I've been talking to a couple guys at Rivals to see if they want him listed or not, especially since they've already ranked him and everything.

To them, it's usually all about who signs a LOI and I'm not sure Nixon will since his one from last February is still binding.

"You must not have much of a life."

Fact: You have been on the board, under this name, since September 17th.

Fact: you have totalled 667 post during that time.

Fact: you average 8.13 post per day since joining under this name(that's 8 times a day for 82 days straight).

Fact: if you account for 8 hours of sleep each day you have posted 1 time every 2 hours for 82 days straight.

Fact: you don't post in the game threads, so it's not like you have posted 50 times in 2 hours on a sat as you watch the game.

Fact: if their is ANYONE on this board who doesn't have a life its muskie5.

The data is available to everyone you might not want to throw stones muskie.
