Wonder what BIG record of each was? I wud suspect Fran is higher, b/c more conference games are played these days + BIG tourney

From my POV, the Alford and Fran era's were similar in success. Alford had two BTT titles and tied for 2nd in conference once. Fran had 1 BTT and best conference finish was 3rd. Fran had a little bit more NCAA tourney success with 1st round wins in NCAA with wins vs murders row of Davidson, Temple, Cinncinati, Grand Canyon and Alford was pretty much zilch. Both layed huge eggs with their best teams.

Lickliter obviously was a disaster similar to Schultz being a disaster before lute Olson.

We are in a completely new era and being the head coach means wearing the CEO, CFO, COO and chief marketing officer hats. X's and O's don't matter if your roster is bad.

Difference being one came in to a solid program coming off the Sweet 16 while the other came in to Lickliter’s $#1tfest.

Didnt he inherit marble and gatens? That's a pretty decent nucleus to build around. It's not hard to turn a basketball program around short time.
Also I think the strength of conference should be analyzed when factoring in success. I haven't looked at any stats but my feeling is the big 10 used to be much tougher in the '90s and even early 2000s.

I care much less about average conference finish than NCAA tourney performance. Conference finish helps set the seed. But if the team continually falls short of the second weekend then I'm not interested in that result.

Also, this is an area in which steady above average performance might be worse than bigger fluctuations. A consistent diet of 6-7th place in the league and never making it to the second weekend of the NCAA tourney isn't desirable. I'll take a year or 2 of poor results and no tourney if they're bookended by Sweet 16 or better run.

Lickliter was 4-14 with Gatens. I’ve watched Iowa basketball for 40 years and I’ve never seen a team with less talent than what Lick left Fran’s. And the Big was sucking big by the time Alford came around. The heyday was the 80’s and 90’s.

This is what drives me nuts about the Lickliter-phobia that has gripped a portion of our fan base for several years. While it’s true that both Raveling (failed to appreciate the ISU rivalry and seemed to struggle second halves of seasons, and did struggle post-season) and Alford (giant pr!ck who always gave impression he wished he was somewhere else, fvcked up the PP debacle, and consistently underperformed post-season) left a bad aftertaste with Iowa fans after their departures, the reality is that the only truly and complete unmitigated disaster in that list above is Todd Lickliter. That’s over a timespan of 50 flipping years!

So to me it seems pretty easy: if you don’t want another Todd Lickliter to be the coach of Iowa Men’s Basketball, simply don’t hire another Todd Lickliter.

Also don’t have a Gary Barta do the hiring.

there is no one below lick, percentage wise. the only ones below him in win totals are from the aughts and teens when they only played 15 to 20 games a year.

hopefully he remains the worst.
I still bet those guys would cringe to see their names listed below his. I feel bad for their heirs.

If Bucky O'Connor had lived, he might have had some very good teams. He's the only Iowa coach to make the Final Four twice.

A lot of coaches much more successful than Fran inherited worse than Marble and Gatens. They were much better at recruiting to team needs them fran
Bottom line is lick was horrible, and Fran was bad. Fran just had the fortune of following lick. 15 years of nothing substantial.

Do you even remember who was on the rest of those teams? Just terrible talent. And we’re not talking recruiting because my whole reference was to what he inherited, not what he built. Don’t conflate the two, that’s a different argument.

The main difference is under Alford Iowa won or made deep runs multiple times in the big ten tournament.

Where almost every year under Fran Iowa went 0-1 or 1-1 except the title win.

Alford 13-6 .581 without the BTT
Fran 10-13 .596 without the BTT

Fran did more during the regular season so there was more time Iowa was ranked and in bigger games.

Iowa needed BTT tournament runs in 2001 and 2005 to make the dance. 2006 when Iowa won was Alford’s only secure season.

Fran’s teams made it despite BTT tournament flops and would’ve made the dance with wins over Michigan State(got screwed) in 2013 and possibly a win over Indiana in 2017.

I remember watching Licks last team and thinking.... I'll be excited if anyone even has a dunk in this game.

We complained about some of Fran's talent and getting physical dominated.... But they are still miles ahead of those lick teams

Came off a sweet 16 with no recruiting done for a year. Only returned 38% of minutes played and 37% of points scored. Griffin was a good Juco pickup, but to call the program ’solid’ when Alford took over is a little revisionist.

Go ahead and hate on me if you will, but outside of Alfords arrogance which rubbed locals the wrong way - he was a much better fundamental X's and O's bench coach than Fran...JMO. I believe Alford was also a better recruiter than Fran. Yes I know Fran eventually got the Murray brothers and Garza but Alford was only at Iowa nearly half of the years Fran was. The hawks were much tougher physically and mentally with Alford. I also think Fran had a fluff early season schedule and requested it that way. The Pierce situation(along with arrogance) was Alfords ultimate demise. Recruiting and knowing how to recruit players that play in the coaches system and also can play a tough hard nosed style(rebounding, defense), in the B1G will be key for a new coach. As a former coach I could not stand watching the playground style any longer. My players would sit and learn the game is more than scoring points and being the leading scorer......much more actually. I am looking forward to see the Hawks have some tough athletic guards that can defend and be a force that other teams need to be worried about. Not just launch off balance 3's and give up career points or 3's to the opposing team.
