Fran Desparetly needs people to transfer

tOSU starts all juniors and seniors. Four of their five starters were nationally ranked recruits, falling between 50-90. I'm sure the bench is fairly stocked.

Hawk freshmen and sophs beat them soundly, obviously without Jok. Is the sky still falling?

I agree we have a nice roster. The only missing piece from this team is a "solid" PG. Someone who can attack the lane and make the players around him better. Bryce Cartwright did that and he was a JC transfer. I am not asking for a 5 star recruit. All I am asking for is a PG who can break down the defense. Bohannon will be a solid player for the Hawks, but he will never be that guy. He will be one of the top guards in the Big10 when he is a junior/Senior.
Bohannon said a year ago that he would be happy to move to shooting guard once McCaffery is at Iowa. I hope that JBo stays at PG since he really runs the offense quite well but I would imagine that both would be PG at different times in next years rotation.

With Nunge and Garza coming in next year as well as the improvement that can be expected from Pemsl, Cook, and Kriener, I think that Iowa will be pretty darn good next year. Bohannon will be even better and Ellingson will as well. Dailey will hopefully still be at Iowa and will also be able to play the point. Williams may be the odd man out since his outside shooting has not been stellar so far.

I think that we already have what is needed for continued improvement next year. Starting 4 freshman this year and being able to compete should be indicative as to the kind of success that we should have moving forward. We just beat OSU without our top scorer and one of the top scorers in the B1G.

Its a pick your poison type of deal with Iowa. Right now I would go the majority of the minutes to these guys:

Bohannon
Moss
Ellingson
Jok (when healthy)
Pemsl
Kriener
Cook
Wagner
Baer

Limited Minutes (less than 5min):
Uhl
Williams
Dailey
Jones

I hate to say it but those 4 should probably transfer out or quit. They are not legit div 1 players and they are not giving anything to the team. It sucks because Uhl was such a key part in Iowa basketball last year. This year for whatever he is not the same player. Williams, Dailey and Jones are not and need to transfer.
How in the world can you say Dailey need to transfer? He's had no chance to play consistantly. He looks to have good skills. The only person that I don't think you'll see here next year is Jones. His injuries have robbed him of the chance, and doubt he'll be healthy enough to play at this level in the next year or so.

I think the best choice is for everyone to hold off making proclamations until the season plays out. Especially with Jok out for the near future, it will mean more regular playing time for others and give them a chance to show what they can do. If the team can play with that effort we saw last night more consistently, will be fun to watch.

Here is my favorite Fran quote of the season (on Illinois):

"When you’ve got three guys who can break you down off the dribble and find guys it is hard to defend. He is particularly good at getting into the lane and finding his guys."

This in stark contrast to Fran's team comprised of 0 guys who can break you down off the dribble and no PG who can get to the lane and find guys. Fran can clearly articulate what other teams have that we don't, but cannot recruit said talent.

I don't think it is via a lack in trying and it also is why quick ball movement and constant motion is so important in his offense.

The game plan and execution against OSU was a thing of beauty.

Last year Fran rode Jok and Uthoff into the ground with no supporting cast. We lose Uthoff and Fran has nobody capable of creating off the bounce, creating their own shot, or making open shots in year 7 to take some of the load off Jok. Remember this time last season when people were asking if Jok was sick, aggravated his knee, etc.? It's called heavy legs and fatigue from shouldering a disproportionate amount of the offensive load. Jok's stamina has never been great, but Fran is hell bent on riding him into the ground again this season as we saw last night in a blow out loss.

Next to Moss. The guy is our best / only slasher and second best shooter on the team. Two road games to his home state and Fran parks him on the bench for 90% of both games and adds insult to injury by putting him in at scrub time. Moss got called for traveling, then yanked. Jok was a human highlight reel of bad plays, but remains in the game. I would say the odds of Moss returning are 25% based on the past couple weeks of not so subtle messaging from Fran.

Fran is in over his head here. Put him at MN or IL with their talent and he would have a top 20 team competing for a big ten title. Unfortunately he will never assemble that level of talent here.

Ahhhh...this is insanely stupid as it appears Iowa's talent level is on the rise. Unseasoned maybe but certainly trending in the right direction.

As it pertains to Moss the kid has to get it on his own and stop settling for jumpers. In transition he attacks the rim and it is beautiful but in the half court set he settles for jumpers. Even against OSU he would get by his man and pull up for a 15' shot when he clearly could get into the lane, rim and at the very least to the foul line.

I believe Moss is riding the pine more bc Fran is trying to send that message to him. If Moss gets it he becomes special, if he doesn't his ceiling is just above avg.

Again, happy to eat crow after an Iowa win. I also agree on the ball movement being exponentially better the last two games than it has all season excluding non-conference paycheck games. This is the basketball Fran has talked about playing for 7 years. Better teams and 3's not falling will impact future outcomes. Much better flow and continuity with rapid ball movement leading to guys getting driving angles and open looks. Up to this point in the season, many possessions were void of good shot opportunities. The last two games guys have passed up good shots for better shots.

So you admit you were wrong? Holy Cow I just read this thread for the first time and wow do we have negative fans! The whole thing oughta be archived as a warning that if a fan can't keep their reactions from sky high panic, they should avoid a keyboard. :)

I promise you, there are several teams in the Big Ten that would trade a once decently ranked point guard...and all so lovely in the traditional sense..for Bohannon. In a heart beat.

I admit the the team has delivered more in the last 2 games than I thought they could this season with respect to fundamentally changing the offense without Jok. The last two games have looked like the type of basketball Fran has been talking about playing for the past 7 years.

Regarding Bohannon, I have not questioned his ability to shoot the ball. His challenge comes when he has to create for himself or others in our (until the OSU game) stagnant half court offense. Jok dribbling or holding the ball for 1/3 of the shot clock or more puts everyone else in spectator mode. Without the ability to get dribble penetration, you have few options under 10 seconds, thus the deep contested 3's by Jok and Bohannon. That offense does not work for this team because we don't have 1:1 playmakers.

Yes, feel free to archive this thread if that will make you happy. If you want to print it off, I would be happy to autograph it for you as well. This is an opinion forum. You, myself, and others all have them. When Fran gets us to the big ten championship game (notice I said gets us to , not win) and stays competitive in a 2nd round NCAA game (again, I did not say win), then you can posterize me all you want in here and I will respond with "DanL was right and I was wrong." Until then, Iowa has a lot of work to do get to the next level in years 7-10.

I think Fran is genuinely lost in his rotations. He has always played a decent amount of players per game but this season it's just becoming 11-12 man rotations consistently and it doesn't work. How does Moss start, but only play 6 minutes? Moss is 10x the player Brady is. Jbo was sick tonight so I understand that but he's also struggling how to play cook and pemsl while still getting wagner minutes (whose been playing the best out of the 3 lately). Ultimately I think Fran needs to get rid of some people this year, of cut down to a 9-10 player rotation.

Unfortunately for him every recruit who is coming in the coming years (with the expection of Garza) will fall under the mess that is the 2-4 position rotations.
2 wins later, your argument seems invalid.

That said, I don't see Jones sticking around for a 6th year with all the healthy big bodies that will be on the roster next fall.

Williams might be a candidate lo leave, but he's the back-up point guard and there is nobody else there behind Bohannon.

Is Dailey the odd man out?

I personally don't believe there is an odd man out.

Williams...against Rutgers, he had more bounce in his step than at any point this season. Maybe the back is finally healing up to allow him to be more active.

Dailey...I would think that maybe he understands now he should have red-shirted this year and might be a candidate for that next year - but given Pete will be gone, maybe not.

Jones...he may just "retire", so if that is defined as odd man out, then most likely.

And don't discount the possibility of one of the two big guys coming in red-shirting...

I LOVE the depth, and it appears Fran may have figured out some things with Jok sidelined as to what combinations fit together. For instance, it seemed like we saw Williams and Uhl paired together a lot the last two games.

We may lose a player or two, but I sure's hell don't want it to actually happen.

Chances are, somebody will transfer out this spring. You can't keep 13 athletes happy with only 1 senior starter and 3 new recruits coming in. That's why I addressed possible transfers.

IMHO - Your assertion the roster needs a makeover and Fran doesn't know what he's doing with substitution patterns seem invalid given the 2 recent wins without Jok.
