The thing I dislike the most about Fran are his useless temper tantrums. Makes him look like an ass and Iowa by association. But he isn't getting fired unless he punches someone and as long as he just makes the tourney. If ,if he ever gets great guards(hoping for Bowen and Brock) maybe we get sweet 16. Bluder went a long time treading water and not doing much. Then her recruiting picked up and she is making hay. As long as Fran is here ,I'm hoping he'll have success in the tourney.

Agree with the op Fran is done, but he has not left nor will he until he retires or change in AD
Oh wow...what an accomplishment. Can I get a participation trophy too?! Fran has won 4 games in 7 NCAA tourney appearances.
Not really. He may have reached his ceiling but please go check the program before he got here if want to see what bad coaching really looks like.

The fundraising thing is laughable. People literally line up to donate to the U of I. It’s not like Gar Bear is out pounding the pavement.

No, but it isn't too far off. The Big Ten gets 8-9 teams in the tournament every year. Making the tournament just means we aren't one of the 5-6 worst teams in the conference. Not that amazing of an accomplishment.
And has only won 2 NCAA games in the past 7 years (6 because of the covid year). What are we REALLY afraid of losing, here? Fran is not some irreplaceable legend.

I have no idea why not. We absolutely suck. I actually read a news article where some ding dongs were comparing him to Tom Davis, saying that his accomplishments were equal to Tom's. Bull-f'ing-shit. In 13 seasons Tom made it to the elite 8 once and the sweet 16 twice. In the same number of years Fran has made it to the...oh that's right, Fran hasn't made it anywhere. Dude needs to go.
Yeah because making somthing half of D1 makes is a real accomplishment. Jezus the expectations around here are horrendously low.
He really needs to just beat the sh** out of a ref so that we can both celebrate him beating the sh** out of worthless pieces of sh** that aren't doing their jobs aka enforcing the rules of the game while also getting fired in the process.
It would be the best of both worlds if Fran lost his sh** and attacked a ref. I would fully support it...........
Sooooo …. You think in Year 14 things will change? Maybe in Year 16? Year 20? So one and done is all we can accomplish? Zero coaches out there who could come in and win half there Big 10 games in 13 years? Just stay the course because we MADE the tourney? Are you happy with the state of the program? You truly believe the best is yet to come!? If so, how?

How is it teams like Nebraska, Iowa State and Northwestern can get upgrade players from the portal and play defense and Fran can't? I am not a racist but I am a realist. Fran recruits slow white kids that get beat up by black athletes up and down the court. Just a fact. Examples are Mulvey, Connor and Patty. Just poor recruiting and coaching!

We will be longing for 19-14 next season. Murray gone. Perkins will hit the portal. No way will he want to be a part of the sinking ship. Rebraca gone. Thankfully we have two highly touted big men just waiting for their turn on the bench. (sarcasm)
I think that his record in the NCAA tourney is nothing to brag about. If simply making the tourney is enough... you need to set higher goals. So in a sense, yes. Just "participating" in the tourney is a pretty low bar.

Reading these comments, I would say few if any are "afraid" of losing Fran.
But I will add that few if any AD's would fire Fran with his body of work.
I'm ready for a change - but if I was AD I still wouldn't fire him.
He won't be fired and will be at Iowa next year, unless he chooses to leave, but I expect next year's results will put more pressure on FM. So, if he bombs in 2024 and 2025 there may be a slim chance he will be terminated in 2025. The next two years are going to be rough for Iowa BBall unless major contributions form the portal. JMO FWIW
He already has. Fran is under contract until 2029 when Jack will graduate, Fran will be 70. We're stuck with this mediocrity until then. We just have to get used to it.
It could be worse but it sure could be a lot better too.

Comparing expectations for a school like South Dakota St vs Iowa is disingenuous to say the least.
Show me power 5 schools where a coach has kept his job for over a dozen years without making Sweet 16. I bet that list is hot garbage that nobody is envious of.
And at this point in college sports Big Ten and SEC schools should be the only comparable.
Most of us think it should be done but.... to find a decent coach under those circumstances would be next to impossible. And on another note, my biggest problem with Fran is he almost never (yes there are exceptions) but most of the time the team comes out flat & uninspired.
Making the tournament isn't mediocre. Those of you calling for Frans head are the same idiots that got Tom Davis fired and spun our program into the gutter for a long time.
Fran hasn't had things go his way in the tournament which is unfortunate. Those great players that everyone said Fran got lucky with? Yeah no one else wanted them. Fran got them because he is good at his job.
His teams do need to play better defense. Zero doubt and that should absolutely be addressed with the hiring of a defensive coach. So who is that exactly since it seems to be a foregone conclusion this person exists in the world. Name the top 5 assistants in the country we could poach that are defensive experts. Tell us how much it would take to poach them to Iowa. Iowa fans will make sure the money is there.
It is frustrating to watch our teams that obviously can play with anyone fizzle at big moments. That being said I am proud of our players and their success.

I’ve never understood why his players rarely have the intensity that he has. It’s really an interesting dichotomy.
