Recently sounds like Nova wants him. Penn wants him. Anyone else?

And yes, everyone chill and let our process take place. Still good candidates out there and I'm really disappointed to read the Devries stuff with Indiana.

If villanova is interested in hiring a 66 year old coach who has never gotten a team to the sweet 16, hasn't won a power conference regular season title and doesn't believe in playing defense I say go for it!

It might be a stop gap to find someone else they don't have the resources for right now. That was my thought.

He could maybe bring in a Hawk or two who may be more successful in the Big East?

The most important thing about Fran getting hired elsewhere is whether or not that saves Iowa any money. Barta was such a f#$k up that it may not. But if it does save Iowa money then I say hire Fran now 'nova. And pay him whatever amount takes the maximum off Iowa's tab.

It’ll absolutely save us money. His buyout is reduced dollar for dollar if he gets a new job.

I’m guessing the Penn job probably pays $700k/yr. So that would cut the buyout in half each year.

It would make more sense for Nova to try and entice Jay Wright back for a few years. Not sure how much he makes for CBS, but he was a great coach and recruiter.

The Big East is an excellent basketball conference.

Name a coach since Tom Davis that did have it? Maybe it’s not entirely the coach’s fault that Iowa hasn’t had much postseason success.
Not entirely, no. Not all programs are equal.. I get it. But.. and just my opinion, but is it the university or program's fault that Fran didn't coach defense, or have good guard play? Or that Licklilter was in over his head without Brad Stevens?

Alford had a few solid teams at Iowa, but he didn't really light the world on fire at UCLA, either, considering the program he was coaching. Yeah he reached the Sweet 16 there, but you knew he was going to get some players. He didn't do whole lot with it, all things considered.

The post Lick HC at Butler career trajectory of both Brad Stevens and Todd Lickliter never ceases to astound me.

Do we know for sure that Barta put that clause in his contract?

There's no offset language in his contract unless one was added fairly recently.

Maybe I'm looking at an old version but the one I'm looking at right now specifically says the buyout sum will not be reduced if he finds other employment during the term covered by the contract.
You’re right. I had previously read that clause incorrectly. I initially read it as “will be reduced”, but it says “will not be reduced”.

The Big East is an excellent basketball conference.

Can be but I'm wondering long term success. There were some elite teams and it looked like it was back about 10 years ago. Almost every team in the conference is taking a pretty big step back sans St. Johns. UConn gets a pass with injuries but healthy now.

Creighton doesn't look like it will go far, Marquette got lost even with Shaka, Xavier was in the play-in game. Georgetown is a has been afterthought. Butler is in real trouble and I thought would be better than a losing record under Matta. DePaul would get beat 4 out of 5 times by Washington. Seton Hall is worse. Providence is under .500 by 8 games.

Long story short, like everything else, what is the long term trend going to be with this conference? Can they quickly rebound or is this what we will see. I find it hard to belive that for a conference with 5 teams ranked during the year and 3 in the top 10, only 1 is still ranked at the end of the season.
