Fran Needs to Cut Some Minutes

At this point we need to hold steady/tweak with current rotation for the most part IMO. But, I would like to see 1) Kreiner versus Uhl 2) Dailey ahead of Williams (for now) and 3) less of Wagner until he provides some type of offense.

I had to keep reminding myself last night that we we were playing a very good and experienced team. On top of that they were really hot out of the gate and gained the momentum early. Hawks played like an inexperienced team that was intimidated early and never recovered. Plus Jok was awful in the first half.

I watch a lot of college BBall and Purdue will be and will move up/stay a top 10 team most of the year IMO (if no major injuries to key players like Swanigan and the point guard).

Yes, a pure point guard would be very nice, but we do not have one. I do think JB will be very good before he is done at Iowa.
I'm curious how the rotation is going to work next year. Connor and Bohannon will get the starting guard spots. Moss will move to the 3? Baer backs him up there? Moss backs up the 2G spot and Nungee starts at the 3? Baer/Nungee split the 3 minutes?

My guess is Bohannon, Moss, Baer, Cook, and Pemsl start. I think one of Nunge or Garza has to redshirt. There is simply way too many players in the frontcourt next year for everyone to get playing time.

I really like Fran, but one criticism I have had of him is roster management. I think he could do a little bit better in this area and be more efficient. I know it isn't easy but good roster management can really help a program a la Wisconsin under Bo Ryan.

I also really like the idea of redshirting some players especially ones who need development. I think we have seen guys like Moss and Ellingson really benefit from that. You can also spread out classes a little more. I fear a guy like Kriener will end up buried in his career behind other guys when a redshirt could have allowed him to seperate from Pemsl and Cook. Just my two cents.

Geez, Gil really built you fans as a pack of haters....

Should have known you'd be a bunch of regulars discussing your fave cbball team.

Best of luck to Iowa basketball, even if this year is mostly a learning year for your younger SAs.

If one of the incoming bigs RSs, my guess is Nunge for strength purposes. I'm anticipating him being a frontcourt version of Dailey. But he might be too good to RS the way he's been playing this season. We'll see.

You could say roster management is an issue. But we have a different program than WI. Fran and the players he recruits like to run and that means a longer bench. A deep bench is good for our style of play. But it does run the risk of transfers. It's a nice problem to have.

Even if Nunge and Garza are that good, finding playing time will be very tough next year with Cook, Pemsl, Wagner, Uhl, and Kriener. Someone will be left out.

I agree that our system and program is different than Wisconsin. However, I think 9-10 guys is about the max rotation for any system. I prefer to redshirt one guy each year to balance out the classes and allow a developing player to grow and maximize his potential. Typically, this works better with bigs but still is a good thing with a guard or wing.

More Dailey & Kreiner and less Uhl & Williams would be a good start. Not sure what we do with Baer & Wagner now that Cook is back? Way too many 4's.... Wagner or Uhl could play the 3 but cannot score so they are not a good option there.

Defensively a lineup with Moss & Dailey is much better as both of those guys can play on-the-ball D. Kreiner has got to the play the post against bigger teams. He's the only guy that can play that spot. He can get some boards, bang and hit a few shots.
Since we we're going to lose to Purdue regardless of who played, I think Fran was just trying to see how everyone responded to being tossed in the fire.

Fran's recruiting failures are on full display. If we had an AD with a brain or a pair, he'd cut the cord and find a coach that is capable of winning a BIG title. Fran is another Tom Davis - Raveling's recruits . Sorry to break it to you guys.
DISAGREE.GIVE TEAM AND COACH TIME TO PROGRESS.NEW PLAYERS AND TOUGHER MENTALLY SO FAR.FRAN AND GUYS MOVING FORWARD.MY OPINION ONLY WE WILL GOOD SOONER! THAN LATER.GO HAWKS

Almost everyone has shown flashes of being able to play, and EVERYONE has shown the ability to play like crap.

IMO playing time has to be earned and I'm not sure the 7, 8, and 9 spots have been. In the meantime give everyone a shot as each game we see some flashes. Let's give guys some minutes and see what we have. In 8 more games half the league season is over and we will know where we are at.

In spite of some unrealistic dreams on this board this team isn't going to do much this year so let's develop some of the youngsters.

This I agree with. We are too young to just isolate a couple players. Especially right now, with so many players showing signs of improvement and good play.

Once we are deeper into the B1G season, these young guys will have more experience and we will be able to see who can handle/deserve more minutes. Once we have more film & a better statistical line, Fran can cut down the lineup a little easier. Maybe. I could also see several of these guys continuing to improve. Which I hope is what happens. But then what?

Fran will need to cut down the lineup and minutes of some players. He has to And he will. I just think there are some players that could contribute and be assets, this year. Dailey is one to my liking. Kriener maybe another. But they need minutes to grow and prove it. At least for a few more weeks. Then let the cuts happen.

Uhl and Williams let moss play backup PG. And maybe give Kriener more minutes against the big teams he should have played more tonight.
I agree. I know there's only so many minutes to go around, but it seems like every time Kreiner is in the game he makes a positive contribution. We'll need his size in some games this year. As much as I'm happy Fran is our coach, his slow response to pulling minutes from players like Ogelsby, and Uhl is problematic. Having said that, he also stuck with Ellingson, and he seems to be finding his groove, so what do I know!
