Fran Twitter rumor: Arkansas

We could end up with another Lick. We actually have momentum going into next year and we have fans rooting for our coach to leave so Bart a can hire a new guy? Go figure.
Nebraska is a more appealing job now with New facilities, sell out arena, and fans who are realistic.
We would never land a Fred quality coach...back to mid major ranks...maybe Tim Miles?

Nebraska fans and realistic have never been used in the same sentence until now.

Someone asked the question about who leaves if he does take the job. Going through our roster

JBo stays
Joe W stays
Pemsl stays
Kreiner stays
Those are all Iowa boys that would play here no matter the coach.

After that:
Garza he seems like the kind of kid that will stick to his commitments and will stay
Nunge already redshirted, so he would likely stay unless he thinks he can get a transfer waiver
Cook either stays or declares
Moss either stays or declares
CJ may leave as the only reason he came was for family connections to Fran
Joe T who knows? May desire the challenge of playing in the Big Ten and would get decent minutes as a freshman since we would lose a PG.

Definitely:
Patrick leaves
Connor leaves

A new coach would have to find some Jucos or senior transfers to step in right away as there’d be anywhere between 3-8 open roster spots. There’s a decent foundation if fewer people leave, but potentially only having one PG(who should be playing SG) would kill us and we’d likely see a bottom tier finish in conference if we also lose Cook.

The bigger issue is that 2020 needs to be a big class for us.

Recall that we missed out on Nick Collison as we went through a coaching change from Davis to Alford.

I could see the same miss with Foster and others.

Nebraska fans packed their arena for very mediocre BB
teams in recent years.
Nebraska football fans are a different animal when you are talking expectations. When have never won a single NCAA game it keeps those expectations in check.

Fran will do what is best for his family. They may be
fed up with the negative publicity that Fran brought on
himself by cussing a referee. They may want a fresh
start for Connor and Patrick in a new environment.
It is difficult to gauge the attitude of his wife toward
Iowa University.

This thread is idiotic. Anybody who truly believes Fran leaving is a good thing for this program needs to have a real serious reality check with themselves.

Exactly. Why would we would risk that 20 minutes of good basketball we saw the last 1.5 months of the season? People have very selective memories. There was a reason Iowa fell to a 10 seed aka almost out of tournament and needed an epic comeback against TN. Credit the players for stepping up but people linking the second half comeback to success next year need to get in line with the others you say need a reality check.

Fran is who he is at this point. If your bar is maybe make the tournament with 0 shot of winning a 2nd round game then Fran is your guy. I just don't have those same low expectations. If he hits the transfer portal and adds a guy or two based on open spots + Touissant then I will have reason to believe he is capable of facing reality.

Fran is no dummy. You're always going to take a meeting and listen.

Fran to Pittsburgh talk is what got the 10 year buyout contract. Fran has a pretty long contract so longevity is not issue. His pay is 9th in B1G last I saw, so he might be angling for pay raise.

If the new coach can keep JoeT in fold, then new coach at Iowa won't be a huge issue in short term. Losing JoeT and Connor at same time would leave the team without a backup PG.

After the 2015-16 season Georgia Tech was a job that Fran was also very interested in but Patzner got it instead of him.

Arkansas list looks like group where you fire out lowball offers and you wait for first candidate to say ‘I’ll take it’.

Mussleman being only exception.

We literally missed the sweet 16 by one possession.

Wouldn't be the first time a coach's wife was the catalyst behind his departure.

Haha. The Arkansas search committee is a bunch of idiots.

I have to believe Gopher fans would love to get Little Ric out of town.

The Nevada coach is the ultimate transfer U. 3/4 of his team's roster is a transfer.

Musselman is a very good coach. Who cares if he got good transfers? That is part of the game these days.

I'm not sure the odds of this happening, but I'm not so quick to dismiss it. Fran's been here almost a decade and it's no secret that it was kind of a rocky year off the court, and someone also mentioned the Arkansas baseball aspect with Connor, and Patrick hasn't gotten to college yet, so could be a clean start at a new school.

Tough to say. Probably only Fran (and those closest to him) knows how interested he really is. And is he at the top of Arkansas's list? Lot of if's here.

I really doubt that Fran would want to jump into the cesspool that is SEC recruiting with Kentucky, LSU,Auburn ect. Fran is not a cheater and that could doom him in that league.

If not a rather quick denial by Fran I feel it's 50/50 and it will have a big IMO negative effect on the program in the short term, long term would ultimately depend on who is brought in to replace him. Could be a good move long term or send Iowa back into the cellar.

I'm not buying it.

Arkansas just fired a coach who went 110-63 over the past 5 seasons, with 3 trips to the NCAA and 1 trip to the NIT (albeit with no Sweet 16 appearances)

There's no way they replace him with a coach who has gone 100-69 over the past 5 years, with 3 trips to the NCAA and 1 trip to the NIT (and no Sweet 16 appearances)

If Fran is feeling unappreciated in Iowa City for the results he has produced, there's no way he takes a job at a school who just fired a coach for producing virtually the same results he has.

Posted on Nevada Sports net by Chris Murray:

"Arkansas fired head coach Mike Anderson last month after eight seasons on the job. Anderson posted a 169-102 record and 78-64 SEC mark. Anderson reached the NCAA Tournament in three of the last five seasons, including two appearances in the second round. Arkansas also had two NIT berths in Anderson's tenure, including this season when the team went 18-16 overall and 8-10 in the SEC."

Who does this sound like?

Every coach probably listens to every offer. Every body else wants the scoop and will say anything

People in the know in coaching circles know that there are reasons why Mussleman will only get interest from certain schools. Let’s just say there are serious reasons he can’t pass a background screening for more prestigious positions.

Yes.

Additionally, I believe there are constant efforts by agents to get various coaches' names attached to different job openings, for any of a number of reasons. Sometimes it can be angling for a raise. Sometimes, I think it's just to convince administrators and fans alike that the guy is relevant outside of his own program. Sometimes the guys conducting the searches like to get names thrown out, just to throw the press and the twitterverse off the scent.

It does all make for some fun speculation, though.

So it sounds like Mussleman already made a statement squashing any rumors of going to Arkansas, and the big target, Kelvin Sampson, is basically restructuring now. Who else was on that list of potential hires besides Fran? Sounds like if Arkansas comes to the table with some cash, it could potentially happen.

OR, it could guarantee a hit if the right replacement is hired. Of course, if Barta is still making that decision I wouldn’t hold my breath.

The other one in the tweet, besides Muss and Fran, was Richard Pitino.

Fans bitching about Fran's temper as a cause of concern is simply unbelievable. Have you watched other coaches on the sidelines? How often have you seen him go off on a player any way near the way Izzo does? Basically, there are too many softies who don't understand coaching. High level sports is not the cuddly environment everyone is becoming used to in the workplace. His players truly seem to like being coached by him. Izzo's too for that matter. Be careful of what you wish for!

I have no idea how serious this is, but Fran would have a lot to gain going to Arkansas. They sort of alternate between being a "football school" and a "basketball school," and with the football program down, he would have a chance to make his mark. They have a more recent history of basketball success compared to Iowa as far as Final Fours go, and the SEC is not as competitive top to bottom as the B1G, making it easier to build and sustain a program. I think if he were offered that job, the biggest decision to make would be whether or not he and his family could handle the culture shock better than Dana Altman could.

Maybe Barta has encouraged Fran and his temper to look at other opportunities???? A mutual parting of the ways.. Gary May have realized this is the best outcome for both Fran and the athletic department??? Maybe??? One could hope????
Who the heck is Gary May?
