Fran's post game (82 sec long)

I hope we can make a deep tourney run so this group of seniors can go out on a high note. They help turn Iowa BB back around. Fran had them playing out of their minds for half the BIG season. We will make the tournament easily which alot of you didn't think possible. We have a nice group of recruits coming in. Fran looks upset..who knows what is going thru his mind.
This won't happen unless our best players touch the ball more. Uthoff did not take a shot the last 12 minutes. In addition he and Jok were a collective 7 for 23. They were shooting at almost 50%.

Hoosier fan, here. I freaking love Fran McCaffery. He is completely raw and unpredictable, just like RMK. His press conferences are easily the most entertaining in the B1G.

Not sure about that. What I think his abruptly short presser signified was a coach that was incredibly frustrated with the way the game was officiated. Ticky tack stuff called on his players and blatant stuff ignored by the OSU players. He likely didn't trust holding his tongue silent about what frustrated him most and simply stood up and walked away before getting in trouble with Big Ten office, IMO.

Now I think there is more blame to go around for Iowa losing this game than just the officiating, but nothing frustrates a head coach more than things that are out of his control.

Only a truly clueless idiot/pussy/douchebag would blame this loss on the refs.

Hell, they even gave us an extra POINT during the most critical part of the game!

If you are talking to me, brush up on your reading comprehension skills. I am not blaming the refs in this post. I was simply speculating why Fran had such a short presser and an abrupt end.

And about that extra point. I wish they hadn't even ruled against OSU in that one, because I knew from that point on, we weren't going to get the benefit of a doubt the rest of the game. But it really all comes down to this......if you go on the road and let a younger, arguably inferior team hang around all game, you really only have yourself to blame.

Wouldn't shock me if a job opens up back out east and he leaves. I realize he has built something here, but lets face it. Iowa will never be able to land the top talent to compete for a Big Ten Championship. He can go back to the MAAC or A-10 and compete for a NCAA bid every year. Next year will be a tough year, could see him being ejected a few times if he is still here.

So why can't Iowa land top talent? Is it lack of facilities? Lack is support? Kirk gets ripped for not recruiting top tier talent, luring 5 star talent from the sunbelt. BB is different. Climate really isn't a factor. Lute and George managed to recruit top tier talent. Seriously we ought to wn the Midwest, the Gophers, Huskers and Illini are dreadful. Only Wisconsin has been consistently good and the have a new coach. If you aren't going to get the top talent, then you need to develop what you do get.

Wieskamp is a four star, top 25 recruit.
Connor is a four star, top 100 recruit.
Tyler Cook is a four star, top 100 recruit.
Jok was a top 100 guy that everyone was after before he got hurt. Same thing happned with Pemsl to a lesser extent.
Woody was a top 50 recruit that everyone wanted.
Mike G was a top 100 recruit.

Fran is doing just fine getting in on top tier talent and landing them.

What really struck me was his response to the question about Uthoff getting shut down the last few minutes and he abruptly said that "you'd have to ask him".

Struck me that he was disgusted that Uthoff doesn't seem to step up when the game is on the line.

He clearly doesn't. I have never seen a player as talented as Uthoff want the ball less, Some of those plays where Gesell ended up scrambling Uthoff had a shot with like 20 seconds left and passed it back to Gesell. I wish he had Jok's mentality. Jok wants the ball. Jok wants to take that shot.

But Jok just stands around and watches Uthoff playing hot potato with Mike. No one makes any effort to get open and Mike has to take it into his own hands and drive to the bucket.

Jok took a shot yesterday at the end. Granted he missed it, but at least he took it. He takes shots at the end. He needs to learn to shoot off screens better. But the team needs to realize that JU isn't looking to take that shot. Heck, Uhl would probably want it more.

I think i remember after the ISU game hearing, after Uthoff dropped 30, telling Jok, "Ok they are gonna key on me so its up to you now." Something like that.. To me it seems he is not at all confident. If I had dropped 30 on a team NO WAY do i not come out and try to drop another 30. He just does not have that killer mindset. Players that have that are always successful. He needs to really step up and take charge. get pissed or whatever he has to do to become dominate again. When he was playing aggressive he was really good. I like that Gessell kicked it up. If we can get 6-10 from Him and 6-10 from Woody, a couple from Sapp then there is no reason this team cannot ride Jok and Uthoff. I hope they get this crap sorted out. But my gut is telling me this is alot deeper then what we are seeing.

These are reasonable results for this program, but three of them on not on campus yet so I will defer on their impact. Jok has just finally got completely healthy and the conditioning issues under control this year. Woody is doing everything he can to carry this team, but Fran has not coached him up at all. How can you not use a 7'1" guy in your offense someplace other than to set a high ball screen. Mike is a solid player, but is about the same player he was when he arrived in IC.
Heck, as much as I dislike Niang, at least you can see he has been coached and is now utilized in the offense.

Okay, but you can run a set play to get him a shot.

But even Jok passed up a shot with 8 sec on the shot clock because he was afraid to take it (per his interview in the Gazette). The result was a shot clock violation. I never thought I'd see the day Jok was afraid to shoot.

I thought that announcer hit it when he said it was like Iowa was running in mud. I immediately thought "quicksand". The guys are in quicksand right now and everybody is afraid to make a move in case of having something else go wrong. They mostly all seem to be overthinking everything and by the time they've thought it out, it's too late. They aren't really running an offense anymore, they're just trying not to make a mistake.

Well they are almost out of time and opportunities. ..they won't have to sweat it anymore. They can look back on this debacle and wonder why they were such a bunch of sissies....

I don't disagree with you, but actually the shot Pete was talking about was pretty early in the shot clock in transition. I was still surprised he passed it up, but assumed Fran had said he didn't want the guys firing up shots early in the possession.

It was reported that Jok was battling flu-like symptons since last Sunday that affected his playing against WI and OSU. Jok felt his shots were all shorted so he decided not to take too many shots in the OSU game. Jok has a good excuse, Uthoff, not sure.

So how much healthier can he get by 8:00 tomorrow night after just playing yesterday and then having to fly back last night. I wouldn't expect him to look healthy on Tuesday
