Free throws, refs, announcers

Oh you are one of THOSE morons

Yeah I'm done with you....

BTW fouls are a PART of their job
Aren't the words equity and fairness the catch phrase of the moment? Well, it isn't very equitable or fair to have to outplay the officials and the other team. Both teams make mistakes and commit fouls. Yep, shitty free throw cost us the game but how would the game have played out if Illinois was in foul trouble. Cockburn fouls almost every possession especially on offense.

Doesn't even account for the ignored TOs

Nobody is giving an award to the refs. But not everyone blames them for a loss either. Free throws. That’s it.
If Iowa had won, the officiating would have still been terrible. There are some that shouldn’t be doing it in this conference and 2 of them reffed tonight. It took the B1G 20 years to stop Tedddy Valentine from doing league games. Take out the trash already.

Free throws cost Iowa the game. That said, it’s inexcusable how long Cockburn is allowed to stay in the lane. He wouldn’t be nearly as effective if he was forced to leave.
He’ll be bust in the association . Too slow and faster more athletic players will run him ragged

We should’ve hit our FT’s, but Cockburn might as well be punching dudes with one hand, ball in the other.

If the rule is not enforced anywhere in college basketball, it no longer becomes 1 guy getting away with it.
Its how the game is officiated these days, guys are parking in the lane all over the place.

Officials are actually very consistent of not calling 3 seconds this year
I suppose if you watch Illinois all year long it would appear that the 3 second rule is no longer a violation. Most of the games I watch there's movement through the lane back and forth. Kofi plants himself and makes very little attempt to step outside at any time. Along with the constant traveling when he makes his bull rush towards the basket it's not surprising he gets the numbers he does.

In spite of that, free throws cost Iowa the game. If they shoot a pitiful 60% from the line they win. No excuse for 45% shooting from the line at this level. NONE!!

Actually that is mostly luck. Sometimes it is on your side and sometimes its not. Wisconsin banking in two threes the other night against Purdue has nothing to do with them being better in close games, it simply means they are lucky this year. KenPoms luck factor spells that out pretty well. Execution and defense were pretty good down the stretch tonight. Missing free throws and a few calls not going are way were not. It happens. If you don't think we are a good basketball team because we have lost four close games down this season I don't know what to tell ya.
That's exactly why Iowa is a good team, but not great. Unfortunately winning close games is the difference between a possible tourney run and an early exit

How many Big10 games do we win when JBo scores 0? Stanfort picked up his slack, but we needed another guy to step up tonight.

Yeah Kofi gets away with assault and traveling on a regular basis.......but we lost the game at the line. Period. Murray gents should stay another year and work on some things before going pro.

gotta make FTs---if they do they win. Did a few calls go the wrong way, yeah.

Kris had a really good look to win the game, 40% of the time that would be a game winner

I do not like the trend though..... Loss to Rutger's thanks to a foul, but it would have been 50/50 at best even if no call. Then OT loss to Penn State. And then a winnable game vs Illini.....Iowa 0-3 in those games...but has the best winning margin in B1G......meanwhlle WIsconsin 5th place in B1G in winning margin, but they won nearly all their close games. Good teams have to find ways to win and not make mistakes.
Sometimes that's just sports. That's why it's fun to watch. All credit to Wisconsin for winning a share of the conference title, but are they really "clutch" against Purdue when they bank in 2 3-pointers in the last minute to win the game? And then lose by 1 to Nebraska, at home, on senior day to have the conference all to themselves?

If it's as easy as just "not making mistakes" at the end of close games, why do teams not do it all the time? Why did Wisconsin not beat last-place Nebraska in a close game with everything on the line? The answer is in a very close game the outcome is often determined by random-ness. Yes, teams can help themselves out by doing the things that are in their control (cough, free throws). But you can't control for teams banking in not 1, but 2 3-pointers. Or you can't control refs making terrible calls (the whistle that put Ron Harper at the line against Iowa) or missing clear traveling (right before Myles Dread hit the 3 against Iowa and Penn State).

Purdue lost 4 games this year on crazy 3-pointers made at the end of games. Does that mean they are chokers? I don't know, maybe? Or maybe it wasn't their year.

He’s also fouled every single possession, as every team’s players triple team and hack him. Surely you see that, too?

I’m saying tonight wasn’t on the refs. It was free throws. You can have that internal battle with yourself on whether the refs cost us the game tonight. I wish you luck.
Yeah, I don’t blame tonight on the officials - it just got so damn frustrating how differently the two halves were officiated. In the first half, Iowa had great rhythm offensively because the officials were allowing freedom of movement. In the second half, Illinois decided to hold on everything and the officials let it go for long stretches. I counted at least two occasions where Kofi jumped into an Iowa defender going after a rebound and no call. Later Kofi jumped into Keegan in the perimeter, and no call; then did the same thing a couple minutes later and did get whistled. all anyone can ask for is consistency from the officials and last night was anything but. That said, if they shoot 70% from the line this becomes a moot point.

as for the broadcast, sounds like I made a good decision to watch from a restaurant where I didn’t have sound! Also, what was up with FS1 not showing the # of fouls for I,Lino I in the second half until the 10 min mark or so?

And winning a bunch close games is random. It usually evens out over an extended period of time. Hopefully Wisconsin’s luck starts to run out and losing to Nebraska is a nice start. They are middle of the road team who is primed for an early exit in the Dance. On the opposite end Iowa is going to be underseeded and will be set up to make a second weekend run. The numbers reflect that.

No, I think he gets hacked by everyone from multiple angles…

If that is true---i.e. Cockburn is being hacked every play and not commiting ton of fouls himself, that forebdes well for Illininois in NcAA tourney, IF the opposite is true, Illnii might get bounced out in 1st game if they don't get a friendly whistle.

I’m one of the biggest Kofi fans out there, and I think you’re right. We’ll, actually you might be wrong because he may not even make it to the nba. 30 years ago he’s a lottery pick, but the game has changed.

How Kofi gets officiated imo will determine how far Illinois goes in the tourney. Because of how the officials called fouls for him last night, he controlled the paint, but whenever he left the game Iowa went on runs. If the games are called tight, then Illinois might flame out in the second round again depending on the draw.

Certainly Luck is involved. Wisconsin had their share of luck this year.

However there are also system factors that come into play that lead to outperformance over larger sample size.

Wisconsin was 6th in conference in Scoring margin in conference games, and they tied for 1st.
Iowa was 1st in conference scoring maring and is in 3-way tie for 3rd place..

There are system factors at work---i,e, the Bo Ryan/Gard run a slow ball system and that translates into B1G wins and B1G conference titles vs Fran's system. I'm guessing Wisconsin has won probably 25% or more of conference titles over last 20 years...and Iowa zero.

Wisconsin
1) Tremendous home court advantage
2) Flopping on defense/getting into opponent head (Davidson)..working the refs in your favor by using lower body to bump/impede, hook and hold, all the dirty chit.
3) Low Turnovers, don't beat yourself, Force a slow pace/not fast past..get back on defense
4) Mental toughness/attention to detail...which incudes making FTs

Wisconsin under Bo Ryan/lessor extent Gard and Purdue under Keady/Painter...those two programs have been built to win conference games.

Painter had the best talent this year but the fact they are uptempo and their defense was down vs past years, led to them losing some close games they shouldn't have....and they also had some bad luck.

I've stopped trying to understand the god awfulness that is Big Ten officiating and just accepting for what it is unfortunately. Make ****ing free throws

And yes, announcers were brutal. Turned on Dolph

This game wasn’t on the refs. There were a couple big no calls, but it was pretty inconsistent both ways. Kofi gets mauled a lot without fouls being called. We played well in the first half, gave up a mini run, then couldn’t hit a ft in the second half. Shoot your average and no one is bitching about a couple no calls.
Iowa had it's chance to win with the last shot. Yeah if Kegans free-throw shots would have fallen we could have won the game that way. I felt the refs had some very bad calls close to the end of the game. Especially when Kockburn jumped into Kegan on his shot from 3 the first time and some calls under the basket against Iowa.
he got it right the second time Kockburn jumped into him and unfortunately Kegan missed all 3 shots I believe.
It was a tough fought game as we all knew would be. To bad we came up short.

Watch the Big 12 games, they plant in the lane for a long long time in that league
I also seen it time and again in SEC games.

They don't call it anymore, just like they don't call it when guys are getting bumped off their paths on cuts and movement in the half court.

They are consistent in ignoring the rules.

Not only that but he's a foul machine. He's not going to get away with much in the NBA. Multiple times he stuck out his arm to impede someone from driving around him, stuck his legs/hips into a driver while still shuffling his feet, and extended his arms/pushed off on rebounds. All of that will be called a foul at the next level. They will exploit him in the pick-and-roll to where he is fouled out or simply unplayable. He doesn't stand a chance. He's not fast enough or skilled enough to stick.

Iowa and the Murray’s are all going to be better and mentally tougher for last night’s adversity/loss. It sucks having to play an extra game in the BTT, but we should still be able to force a rematch with Illinois, which is all you can ask for

No reason to lose faith in this squad after yesterday’s game, for a variety of reasons

I'm not discouraged by last night's performance, not one bit. The shots just weren't falling for Iowa in the second half, and the FT struggles were the dagger. Iowa is absolutely much better than that and I have no doubt they'll regroup and come back roaring.

Iowa did a much better job closing the rebound gap than last time, but still gave up a few more offensive rebounds than I would have liked to see. Neither Rebraca nor the Murrays have the length nor the bulk to consistently challenge Cockburn so I do think a rebounding deficit was to be expected, but I was very pleased that it wasn't nearly 30 this time.

On to the Big Ten Tournament!

Agreed.

preseason, this was always looked at as a game Iowa would be hard pressed to win. Never would have thought they’d play as well in the first half as they did. Far more even matchup than I thought, and Kofi was the difference.

1. Free throws- that’s on us, not acceptable and it cost us the game
2. Announcers- Turn in your check— uniformed and just shit all game did a horrible job of building this up as a hot team versus a big ten title contender until the last second.. they were shit.
3. Refs- biggest **** job since MSU in BT tournament 2013ish!? Absolutely ****ing garbage
Agree with 1 and 2 completely. I completely agree that Courtney Green's officiating sucks and and is totally inconsistent.

And Kofi travels a lot without it being called. That five step basket was a bunch of bullshit.

Hopefully in the NCAA tournament Illinois won't have Big Ten refs. COCKburn will foul out early.

With all the games being televised around the country, the announcing "talent" has failed to keep up. I have no idea who those clowns on FS1 were last night, but they were horrible Illinois and Kofi homers/apologists. I muted the entire second half because I was tired of puking.

The answer? Get rid of all of them and let viewers sync their hometown radio broadcasts to the telecast. Problem solved and network money saved.

Doesn't the fact that the Big Ten retains the same officials for decades tell you the Big Ten is happy with the results those officials produce? It sure seems that way to me.

I am dwelling on how beautiful the Hawks played most of the 1st half and in stretches of the 2nd half.
We have not gone to top contenders home courts and outplayed these teams that much over the last 2 decades like we have the last 5 weeks.
Scoring on 11 consecutive possessions vs a good defensive team on Senior nite is pretty amazing offense.
This team has become as fun to watch as Luka and the Boys last year and that is a bit of a shocker.
