Freedom of Movement

I said this same thing last week in a whining thread about the contact being taught rather than skill & shooting
like the games in earlier yrs. There is a thread on the 6 pack. There was a team of athletes that knew how tomove & shoot instead of dropping the shoulder & running over a person.
Do you really believe that team would be effective in the manner in which the game is now played? They were the best passing team I have ever seen at the collegiate level. But freedom of movement was required to make their passing game work. Vidnovic was very skinny and would have been hardput to get open if he was grabbed as much as CJ and Weiskamp were yesterday. I don't like the way the game is being played these days, but maybe it is just because I'm a grumpy old fart.

If you don't think Fredrick and Weiskamp are fouled on every possession, you're not watching off the ball. They are literally manhandled EVERY damn time down the floor. You go out there and get mugged like that for 40 minutes and laugh it off. You people wouldn't be able to handle it for five minutes. Fredrick wasn't exaggerating. He was just being honest. I'm sick and tired of Big Ten basketbrawl.

The Iowa wrestling team doesn't have any more contact with their opponents than the Iowa basketball team does. Explain that.

And to know that's true, all you need are eyes.

All this talk of getting into the weight room and being more physical is BS in basketball. Period. That's NOT how the game was designed and it's not how it should be played.

And how about the Illinois guard who uses a stiff arm at least a dozen times a game and gets away with it every single time? It is an egregious foul every time, but it was not called ONCE yesterday despite Iowa players being knocked back four or five feet, plenty of space to get off his shot. But let Iowa guys try that, and they'll be called every time.

It's bogus, and there is no other objective way to describe it.

Illinois will not get this break end of NCAA tournament games. Zion last year got the call once end of game and didn’t the next. If forearm space creator by Ayo is as pronounced in the tournament as it was yesterday at times it will be hard for officials to ignore. It sucks for Ayo who has somewhat been taught you can get away with that without fouling. He will be shocked as he should given his perspective of it hasn’t been a foul all season. Iowa will have calls against them on the same premise. Garza will get one posting up. I think both sides can agree the game needs to be called tighter. Ayo would most likely more Garza benefit from this. They are both great players. Foul the whole dam team out next year if it means a much tighter called game next year sometime.

Here's the final play. It looks like there are 2 fouls:
* CJ is shoved in the back and
* Cockburn bumps/hits Garza (especially lower body) on the shot attempt

Watch:

99 times out of 100 that's a foul unless it's inside the final 5 seconds. Then it never is.

And most teams play "physical" basketball in the big ten. If you don't think you run more screens and by consequence more moving screens in totality I don't know what to tell you. At least I'm trying to have a somewhat honest conversation. I saw more moving screens against Iowa than any other team in the big ten. It wasn't that close.

They called a foul on this Play dumbass

Freedom of movement is dead this year. If you read or listen to Bilas at all, he is has been talking about this all year. He said the problem is the NCAA picks a couple things each year for the refs to focus on instead of just having the rules and enforcing them they take their attention away from other areas by coming up with different things to focus on. As a result, you see them letting too much physicality go this year. You see defenders putting their hands and arms on drivers all year and you see post defenders getting away with pushing on the offensive player. I am curious to see if post season is going to look the same or if they are going to call it closer.

I know the extended 3 point line is a reason that people say offense is down but honestly I think a bigger part of it is they aren't calling it like they should in terms of freedom of movement.

That means next year they will focus on Freedom of movement. So the first half of the season will be called that way. Iowa will start off well.

Then slowly the mugging will begin. Garza (hopefully playing) Will be bloodied and hacked. the "February Fade" will start and we will have to stiff arm defenders to try and move the ball on offense. BAU

No they would not be as effective because of all the pushing, shoving & hacking that is not called.
You misinterpreted my statement I guess. The game is not played as originally designed/played.
I'm a grumpy old fart that does not enjoy the game like I used to since all you need to be is physical to the point that mouth pieces are a regular armor anymore

I agree with you that the game today is not being officiated as it was originally. It is hard to watch when teams like MSU, Purdue, Wisky and Illinois get away with so much physical, illegal contact.

On Article 4.b - two hands on a player (being a foul). Apparently wrapping 2 arms around someone is not two hands. The last play vs Illinois I saw some Iowa player (before ball in play) being guarded with two arms completely around him. How can a ref not see this?

There’s a lot they didn’t see or chose not to see that left you scratching your head. There were somethings that they saw that never even happened, like in bound infractions.
