Funny (not really) when IOWA signs a recruit

And they’re listed let’s use a 4 star commitment... and they sign with Iowa then flip to say PSU...then all of the sudden that recruit ends up being a 5 star recruit... maybe it’s just me but I find it very fishy this seems to happen a lot and is very disrespectful to our Hawkeyes..

Data point 2:

Samson Evans, Gatorade POY, Iowa commit

2 star

Yeah that almost never happens. You want to know what happens a lot more? A two-star, or a guy that doesn’t even have a recruiting profile, commits to Iowa and gets bumped to a three star.

You are correct that does happen a lot.

Why do you start threads that are just stirring up trouble??

I cannot believe people are so dumb that they think this is actually a thing. Wow. Like cm99 said, guys get bumped up all the damn time after signing. But that wouldn't meet the criteria of complaining about how iowa gets screwed in everything, as if a player's rating changing now makes them a better or worse player. Do you really care that much??? If you do, get a hobby that would positively influence you or someone else's life. Wow

Edit:hawk2011 posted about getting bumped. My apologies

The odd thing about Evans is that he was ranked a 3-star prospect by Rivals when he committed to Iowa in May, before the start of his senior season. He was then re-evaluated by Rivals in October and subsequently demoted to a 2-star prospect - right at the point in time when he was establishing multiple rushing and scoring records and becoming the 7th all-time leading rusher in Illinois state history [just behind Justin Jackson, a multi-year starter for Northwestern].

I’ll be clear I think Rivals does an absolutely amazing job, BUT this one is a real bug in my a$$.

Good, then we got a steal! So stop worrying about this!

Kid earned it.

Why does it bothering me bother you so much?
Doesn't bother me one bit. I just find it slightly creepy that when a high school kid's star rating changes it literally bothers you. Think about that for a second, a kid you do not know has his star rating changed, which changes absolutely nothing, and that bothers you.

And a guy that you do not know at all you feel it is necessary to judge.

Touché my friend.

Who's worrying? I simply made an observation about a surprising and seemingly unexplainable action. I would do the same if for instance Josey Jewell was voted 3rd team All-B10 this year, down from 2nd team All-B10 in 2016 or, for that matter, a midget won an Olympic medal in the high jump. I don't know why that would agitate you.

Can I make an observation that the only time this thread gets started is to point out the downgrade of stars the hawk's recruits have, but never to point out the upgrade in the star rankings?

Sure, why not? However, if for example a 2-star player committed to Iowa was subsequently upgraded to a 3-star prospect but played in only one game his senior season or played the full season and his production was substantially worse, I would probably comment about that peculiar and abnormal action.

In other news Ohio State and Penn State both signed top five classes. Minnesota continues rowing their boat down by where the people float and Scott Frost is not the second coming as Nebraska did not have a top ten class in Frost's third week on the job.

Jim Harbaugh is still having sleepovers and Wisconsin has signed all of their verbals.

We send it back to the geniuses at ESPN who have lined up an interview with a one eyed trout believed to have blown several targeting calls this season.

Recruiting analysis, just like a lot of AAU basketball coaches, are flawed in their talents.

Which subject gets bitched about more on here?
1} Announcers for a given weeks game.
2} Star reduction when a player signs with Iowa.

I think more often than not people think they get bumped down because you hear, "4 star commits to Iowa" but he was a 4 star through 247 but a 3 star through rivals and ESPN etc. Then people assume that they got bumped down.

On what you said about guy getting bumped up, a lot of that is because no one at the recruiting services has heard of a kid or they haven't reviewed any film until they get an offer or they commit and then they review and rate. College coaches often know about a lot more kids than the recruiting agencies

I don't know how many kids are tracked by recruiting analysts, but it must be well over 1,000. It's impossible to see all these kids, much less compare them. And, even if they could watch everyone and accurately rate them, they can't predict how they will perform in college. So, they gather up all the information they can, including team interest, and give them a rating.

Just look at the NFL draft. Teams spend countless hours evaluating pro potential for kids that are 21 or 22. That has to be a heck of a lot easier than evaluating 16 & 17 year olds. For starters, they are only looking at a few hundred guys, instead of thousands. Yet, the NFL misses on draft day all the time!

Recruiting ratings are not close to perfect, and also not close to worthless.

Blair had a post a few weeks ago that Rivals 'downgraded' him because of difficulty with knowing what position Evans will play in college. That is a challenge the Iowa staff is going to face. Should a player be given 3 or 4 stars if it likely that he'll only be on the field for 6 or 8 plays a game?

I'm not a big fan of the rating system, but in this case there seems to be a little logic behind the downgrade.

Yes, the ratings systems aren't perfect, but in general if you want to win big you need to recruit well. There are mistakes made of course (Josey Jewell), but if Iowa signed nothing by 2-stars and low 3-stars they wouldn't ever do better than 6-6 or so.

Quick question. Why was '19 prospect Ezra Miller moved from a 5.8 4 star to a 5.6 3 star?

He wasn't. 247 had him as a 4 star then Rivals got their rankings out and gave him a 5.6.

Would you like to talk about Terry Roberts or Spencer Petras?

Quick question. Why was '19 prospect Ezra Miller moved from a 5.8 4 star to a 5.6 3 star?
Quick answer: He wasn't. His ranking has not changed on Rivals.

As someone mentioned above, I think a big part of this is people confuse rankings across multiple sites.

For example, Ezra Miller is a 4-star elsewhere, and rightfully so in my opinion, but he's been a 5.6 RR 3-star on Rivals since the first time they ranked him.

I don't do any of the rankings on Rivals, or even agree with them sometimes, but I do like discussing them like anyone.
